Document 1 Overview

Each of the Weir Group Divisions have been divided into groups which have been used to develop a design matrix (see deliverable document 3). The groups have been developed with the service conditions and use of the products in mind. This ensures that similar products are grouped together so the most appropriate design methods can be assigned to each group to help with the innovative problem solving process. Document 1 has been used in conjunction with document 2 in order to help produce document 3.

This document has been constructed so that each group may be taken from the document and considered on an individual basis.

Group 1

Group 1 within the Weir’s Mineral Division is concerned with dewatering and submersible items. (See Fig. 1) The common theme occurring between the products is the necessity of the product to work under conditions which involve a large amount of water/fluid, while working under a high performance level in difficult service conditions. In terms of innovation, the common service conditions which these products must adhere to could lead to the sharing of ideas, both new and existing, between products and companies. A combined focus on service conditions and primary functions by this group can lead to new innovations which could benefit all products. Cooperation with other groups concerning valves etc., which may be used alongside these products, would also benefit innovation. By considering all parts of the process, a better picture of the issues covering connecting products can be addressed and solved thus improving innovative outcomes.

Group 4

Group 4 within the Weir’s Minerals Division gathers together products which are primarily concerned with medium duty applications. (See Fig. 4) A group focus on this specific area will concentrate thought on areas of interest to these products. Innovation for this group of products may also come from Group 2. These products are very closely linked to one another; the only difference being the service conditions which they face. The similarity between the products means a collective innovative vision between Groups 2 and 4 can be achieved, with innovations from Group 2 being fed through to products in Group 4.

Group 5

Group 5 within the Weir’s Minerals Division contains the only pump within the minerals division that is used for gas applications. (See Fig. 5) Dedicated focus for one product, coupled with innovation techniques will produce good innovative results. Service conditions could also be described as severe, meaning this group can also work in an innovative capacity with Group 2. There is also the possibility that the working conditions experienced in this group, will have similarities with those in a nuclear application within the power and industrial division. This also enables cross divisional groups to work with one another in an innovative capacity.

New Acquisitions The Weir Group PLC have recently acquired the following companies. Suggestions have been made as to the positioning of these companies within the groups and divisions outlined in this document.

• Petroleum Certification Services will be added to group 3 in the oil and gas division due to its petroleum application and services which it provides

• Linatex rubber products will be placed in group 3 in the minerals division as it has similar characteristics with the mill liners provided by Vulco which is also placed in this group

• Ynfiniti Engineering Services will form a separate group in the power and industrial section as the products produced here have a different focus placed on the renewable sector, the service provided by this company should be combined with the group focusing on services, group 2, within the power and industrial division

• The products from Seaboard Holdings should be placed in group 2 of the oil and gas division due to its focus on upstream market products

• The products from the former HIM Tech Co. should be combined with group 3 of the power and industrial sector as the products best fit with the other products placed in this group

Conclusion

Each of these groups have been used to develop a design matrix, outlining the design process and highlighting the most appropriate design methods which can be used to help with the innovative problem solving process. The design matrices can be viewed in document 3.
