Do You Know That You Have Eternal Life?

1 Jn. 5:11-13 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God,

that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in

the name of the Son of God.

A world of uncertainty!▪Is there really anything this side of life

that we can “know” for sure? (Heb. 9:27)▸Even many of the things we often trust in,

from time to time fail us!▸It is easy to allow the uncertainty of life to

hold us back sometimes, or to cause us to worry! (Mt. 6:24-34)

▪Outside of the promises of God and the certainty of death, everthing else is pretty much up in the air!

Understanding (Mt. 6:24-34)▪The “key” to this passage is not that we

should just “let things come that may” but that we should trust God above all else and “know” that He will take care of us!▪Don't put our trust in our money, but in our

Master! He is the one sure thing in life and He holds our lives in His hands!▪There is a far difference in one being

prepared & ready and one always worrying! We need to be prepare, but we don't need to worry! (Tit. 3:1; 1 Pet. 3:15)

I. Changed Walk!(1 Jn. 5:1-5)

▪This first verse is often called “the bedrock of the Christian faith!” ▸Bedrock = this is where it all begins! Do we

believe in Jesus? (Cf. Jn. 8:24)▸John 20:31 but these are written that you

may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

▪John then points out that it is not just what we say, but what we do! (1 Jn. 5:2-3)

I Jn. 5:1 cf. 5:5▪A changed mind/heart that results in a changed

life!▸This brings about a “changed walk!” ▪Let’s notice how verse 4 relates to (1 Jn. 2:15-

17)▸1 Jn 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things

in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

II. Clear Witness!(1 Jn. 5:6-10)

▪By “water and blood!” (1 Jn. 5:6) ▸“Water” the testimony of John (Mt. 3)▸“Blood” the testimony of the

death/resurrection!–Rom 1:4 And declared to be the Son of God

with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead\

▪It is through the water and the blood that we are forgiven!(1 Pet. 3:20-21; Rev.1:5)

When we are buried in baptism, the old man is put to death and we rise to walk

a new life washed in the blood of the Lamb!

▪If we are willing to receive the “witness of men” (1 Jn. 5:9) then we need to understand that the witness of God is greater! ▪The Father, Son and Holy Spirit have

testified of Jesus! ▸These are the only eye witnesses that

never get it wrong!

III. Clarifying Word!(1 Jn. 5:11-13)

▪When John is writing this, he is combating “false teachers” (1 Jn. 4:1 cf. 4:4)▸There were those that claimed that they alone

had a special knowledge, yet God has given them all that they need!

▪We can “know” that we have eternal life!▸How exciting is this! But do we “know?” Are we

certain of our salvation?▪As John tells us the purpose of his Gospel, he

tells us the purpose of his epistle (v.13)

Conclusion:▪It truly is good to be a Christian, and to

know that we have eternal life in Jesus!▪The question still stands, “do you know

that you have eternal life?” If not then come to Jesus and know! ▪For us that are Christians, may we

rejoice in knowing and continue to stand on the promises of God!
