Page 3: DkIT Admissions Handbook 2011 online

This handbook sets out the very broad range of programme and career options that await you

here at Dundalk Institute of Technology. The handbook describes each programme of study in

detail. It also identifies the many different careers available to graduates in our graduate profiles.

At DkIT we pride ourselves in providing a learning

experience that is unique. You will learn in small groups,

with excellent support from your lecturers and other

learning-support staff, and your assessments will not

be based solely on end-of-semester examinations, but

on a combination of work undertaken through the

semester, and semester examinations.

Life at college is not only about studying, but also about your

personal development through participation in a vibrant

student community. While studying at DkIT you will also have

opportunities to participate in many sports, clubs, societies

and enjoy a lively social life. Details of these clubs and

societies are also contained in this handbook.

Welcome 1

As well as looking after your academic needs, the Institute

also provides a range of support services including a medical

unit, a careers service, a counselling service and chaplaincy

service, an access service and on-campus accommodation.

I do hope that Dundalk Institute of Technology is for you!

• Extensive Recycling programme (paper, cardboard, floppy

disks, aluminium cans, plastic bottles, glass, copper pipe

and copper wire, steel, printer cartridges, batteries, and

cooking oil). The Institute recycles 43% waste, 39% dry

recyclables, and 18% compost;

• Promotion of Green Transport;

• CANDI Initiative (Computer-Automated-Nightly-Shutdown).

PCs on campus are shut down every night at 10pm,

resulting in a 60% reduction in energy consumption. The

automatic shutoff not only saves power, but also extends

the useful life of each pc, thereby reducing the equipment

replacement costs and DkIT’s carbon footprint;

• Guest Speakers from leading business practitioners of

Sustainability such as IKEA and Marks & Spencer;

• Our support for education in the Developing World;

• At DkIT you will get to be part of sustainability in

action and will have an opportunity to develop

your knowledge and skills in this area.

DkIT is recognised for its commitment to Sustainability and

this theme will become increasingly present in our

programmes, on the campus and in our research.

DkIT is already well advanced in promoting the social,

environmental and economic aspects of Sustainable

Development. Initiatives include:

• DkIT’s support for increasing access and participation in

education

• Our promotion of learning and learner-centred

pedagogies in teaching and research programmes

• Wind-energy generation; Already 60% of electricity is

generated from the Institute Wind Turbine, saving about

900 tonnes of CO2 emission every year

• Integration of an Ice Bank into the newly renovated

Carroll Building, which reduces the need for expensive air

conditioning and cooling

• Use of Fair Trade tea and coffee

• Growing-Food-on-Campus initiative

Students with Disabilities/Specific Learning Difficulties

The Institute continually works to improve access for people

with disabilities and/or specific learning difficulties to its

programmes. The admissions route is the same for all

applicants i.e. through the CAO system.

If your disability and/or specific learning difficulty is such that

it requires supplementary/alternative arrangements being

made to facilitate your study, it is essential that you indicate

this in the relevant section of the CAO application form. We

can then invite you to discuss your requirements with us and,

insofar as is possible, make the appropriate arrangements. It

is also possible to arrange a pre-entry orientation of the built

environment if required: this is particularly of benefit to those

with mobility and/or sensory disability. Please contact the

Disability & Student Quality Office at 042 9370237.

* Any additional entry requirements for a particular

programme are described in the section dealing with that

programme. In practice, however, the entry standard for

programmes is determined by demand, using the points

system, which is based on Leaving Certificate grades. Your

points are determined from your best six subjects at one

annual sitting of the Leaving Certificate, as follows:

A1 100 60

A2 90 50

B1 85 45

B2 80 40

B3 75 35

subject for Level 6 and Level 7 programmes where Leaving

Certificate Mathematics is not a specific subject requirement

(See list of Engineering programmes on page 11).

entry to third-level courses at this Institute.

Non-Standard (Special Category) ApplicationsAll applications for first year programmes must be made

through CAO. The CAO process, including acceptance of

offer of a place, must be adhered to. As a non-standard

applicant, Parts A and B of the CAO application form must be

completed. The "Further Details" section on page 4 of the

form gives you the opportunity to tell us about yourself, your

education, work and life experience, skills, achievements and

interests. Tell us about your motivation to pursue third-level

study and why you have chosen the programme(s) listed on

the inside front cover.

Page 14: DkIT Admissions Handbook 2011 online

Mature Student Application

12

An applicant who is 23 years of age or over on 1st January

2011 is considered to be a mature applicant. Applications by

mature candidates must be made to the CAO by 1st

February 2011.

After the Institute receives applications data from the CAO,

you will then be invited to an interview. Dundalk Institute of

Technology actively encourages applications on mature

grounds. We reserve a number of places on most

programmes for mature students entering via the mature

route (see exceptions below). Mature students register on

all programmes and contribute positively to academic and

campus life. We offer a specialised induction process for

mature students on entry and provide a range of learning

supports designed to assist mature students reach their

full potential.

The decision to take up full-time education is a major one. In

order to make the right programme choice, you are advised

to speak with academic staff about the particular area of

study that interests you. This will also be an opportunity for

you to find out the level of demand for certain programmes

(among mature applicants) and to find out what the

minimum criteria may be. For example, if there is a high level

of demand for a certain programme, applicants may be

shortlisted for interview and it would be useful for you to

know at an early stage what the interviewers are looking for

in applicants. Contact details of academic staff are provided

in the pages outlining programme details in this handbook.

How does the mature entry route operate? After DkIT receives applications data from the CAO, you will

be sent a pre-interview application form (usually in March).

You will be required to complete this form by the deadline

specified before you can be called to interview. This is your

opportunity to attach evidence of relevant work experience,

prior study /qualifications, etc. to this pre-interview

application form – good quality photocopies will suffice;

please do not send original documents. We do not require

you to send copies of this documentation to the CAO – we

wish to receive it directly from you as part of the

pre-interview process.

The pre-interview application form will assist you to prepare

for the interview and requires you to consider the following:

• your education record to date

• your employment history and how it may be relevant to

the programme you wish to study at DkIT

• your reasons for choosing this particular programme

• the possible career paths you have in mind

• the ways in which you are /are not prepared for

third-level study

• any relevant skills you possess

The interview follows later in the spring /early summer and is

your chance to demonstrate your abilities to the interviewers

in an encouraging environment.

Please Note:

• Entry to Nursing Programmes DK870, DK871, DK872,

DK873, DK874 DK875 DK877, DK878 is coordinated

by the Nursing Board (nationally). Mature interviews

for these programmes are not arranged by the

Access Office at DkIT.

• Programmes DK766 (Performing Arts) and DK860

(Applied Music): These interviews are not arranged

by the Access Office as entry involves successful

completion of an audition. Instead, the academic

department contacts the applicant directly.

listed here, you can of course avail of an interview

through the Access Office. Offer(s) are made according

to the order of your preferences.

Information on financial supports is available at

www.studentfinance.ie.

Page 19: DkIT Admissions Handbook 2011 online

The admissions policy in relation to FETAC-linked Programmes

has been widened since 2005 to allow a greater variety of

progression routes. The minimum entry requirement for

graduates of FETAC Level 5 and 6 awards to:

• Higher Certificate (NQAI level 6) programmes is a full

FETAC Level 5 or 6 award.

• Ab-initio Ordinary Degree (NQAI level 7) programmes is a

full FETAC Level 5 or 6 award, plus one Distinction or

two Merits.

• Ab-initio Honours Degree (NQAI level 8) programmes

(with the exception of nursing & midwifery programmes)

is a full FETAC Level 5 or 6 award including a Distinction

grade in at least three modules.

In these three cases, a general specific requirement for

Mathematics or a language will not apply. Notwithstanding

the minimum entry requirements listed above, relevant

cognate courses and/or specific pre-requisite FETAC modules

may be required for some programmes. Details are available

from the Admissions Office or the ‘FETAC Information’

section of the CAO website (www.cao.ie).

In some programmes, a specific module such as a

Mathematics or language module is a mandatory component

of the FETAC award being presented. This requirement may

be waived if the applicant has evidence of equivalent

achievement from other examinations (such as previous

Leaving Certificate award). It is the responsibility of the

FETAC-linked Programmes 17

applicant to provide such evidence directly to the

Admissions Office.

FETAC Links to Nursing Honours Degree Programmes

The following qualifications meet the general requirements for

Honours Bachelor Degree Programmes in General Nursing,

Psychiatric Nursing, Intellectual Disability Nursing, and

Midwifery:

FETAC Level 5 award in Nursing Studies (DCHSN)

Or

Community and Health Services (DCHSX)

Or

Healthcare Support (DHSXX) with Distinctions in at least 5

modules which must include:

D20001 Anatomy and Physiology

D20002 Introduction to Nursing and

D20032 Human Growth and Development or

C20006 Biology

A full FETAC award normally contains 8 modules. A full award

may be accumulated over more than one academic year. In

such cases, it is the responsibility of the student to apply to

FETAC for a full award where courses are taken over more than

one year. A record of achievement or component certificate

does not meet these minimum entry standards.

An overall point score is calculated based on the best 8

modules presented.

For modules with a credit value of 1, scores awarded are

as follows:

Pass 20 points

Merit 35 points

Distinction 50 points

Scores are adjusted pro rata to take account of credit values

other than 1 for the module. Scores are also adjusted pro rata

to take account of the module level; level 1 scores are

multiplied by 0.5, level 2 scores are multiplied by 1.0, and

level 3 scores are multiplied by 1.25.

Accelerating Campus Entrepreneurship (ACE)The Accelerating Campus Entrepreneurship (ACE) Initiative is

a joint collaboration of Institute of Technology

Blanchardstown, Cork Institute of Technology, Institute of

Technology Sligo and National University of Ireland Galway

and is led by Dundalk Institute of Technology through the

Regional Development Centre and supported through the

HEA’s Strategic Innovation Fund.

This project seeks, through a collaborative approach, to create

entrepreneurial graduates. This not only requires embedding

entrepreneurship education into existing non-business

programmes but effecting organisational change within and

between the institutions to reflect entrepreneurial processes

involving collaboration between the academic Schools and

Departments, Incubation and Technology Transfer Offices.

It provides innovative approaches to entrepreneurship

education to ensure students from non-business programmes

take enterprise related modules with the student gaining

experience of what it is like to run and operate real businesses

and in this way promoting self-employment as a real,

attractive and viable career option (www.aceinitiative.ie).

programme specifically designed to strategically assist second

and third generation family-owned businesses to move

through succession issues. Offering a pyschology focused

approach to help address family business issues, the project

provides applicants with in-house mentoring and support for

succession planning.

Innovation for Competitive EnterprisesProgramme (ICE)The Innovation for Competitive Enterprises Programme (ICE)

(www.iceprogramme.com) is an immersive, hands-on

in-company innovation support programme for SMEs. The

programme aims to develop the innovation capacity and

capability of SMEs and is focused at ultimately improving their

competitiveness through the commercialisation of new ideas,

products and processes.

Both the STS and ICE programmes are part-financed by the

EU INTERREG IVA Programme managed by the Special EU

Programmes Body and are joint collaborations of Dundalk

Institute of Technology, University of Ulster, Glasgow

Caledonian University and University of Glasgow. Both

programmes are aimed at supporting companies based in the

six Southern Border Counties of Ireland, Northern Ireland and

Western Scotland.

The Regional Development Centre also spearheads the

growth and development of the digital media sector in the

North East and cross-border area in the areas of film,

animation, gaming, television and video production and

About This ProgrammeMechanical Engineering is about

putting ideas into action. It is

about inventing, designing,

developing, manufacturing and

maintaining products,

equipment and machinery of all

kinds. Mechanical Engineering

design can be found in areas as

diverse as medical equipment

and even artificial limbs. You will

also find mechanical design at

work, for example, in the

mechanical systems and

aerodynamics that are

developed for Formula-1 racing,

everyday cars and vehicles that

we use on a regular basis.

Mechanical Engineers and

Technicians use their knowledge

of materials, mechanisms,

power, energy and

manufacturing technology to

produce the design

specifications for their inventions

and to see those inventions

become reality. They also build

and test prototypes of their

products in order to prove their

designs. Mechanical Engineers
