Definition of “Wahi”Literal meaning: “To signify something quickly, whether by way of enigma or metaphor, by way of meaningless sound , by moving a part of body, or by way of writings”.

In this meaning, Allah tala said ““So we sent this wahi(inspiration) to the mother of Musa” (28:7)

In Islamic terminology, wahi means: God's divine message conveyed to Allah’s chosen persons (Prophets).

Need for “Wahi”4 questions about every human:

.who is he? How is he created? Why is he created? Who created him?

We can answer first question from five senses, second question from sciences, wisdom. But for the both last two questions , we need 3rd source of knowledge: divine revelation or wahy.

Learning:Limits of senses, sciences

Every Wahi cant be judged logically.

Subjects of wahi generally belongs to those things which human cannot learn from senses and intellect alone.

THREE KINDS OF ‘WAHIY’1.Wahiy at heart:

Allah directly inspired the Prophet ‘ heart without the medium of an angel, in sleep or in full consciousness, e.g.: wahiy to prophet Ibrahim (a.s.w.s) to slaughter his son

2.Direct discourse:

Allah directly speaks without any interlink, only prophets can recognize this totally different voice, e.g.: Allah directly talk to prophet Musa (a.s.w.s)

THREE KINDS OF ‘WAHIY’(contd’)3.Angelic wahiy’:

Allah send His message to the prophet through an angel. Sometimes the angel is not visible but only his voice is heard, sometimes he comes in a human figure and seldom he comes in his original form.

All these three forms of wahiy are mentioned in this verse:

“‘It is not fitting for a man that God should speak to him except by inspiration, or from behind a veil, or by sending of a messenger to reveal with God’s permission what God wills: for He is Most High, Most Wise’ (42: 51).

Features of Revelation on holy Prophet ( s.a.w.s)• Ringing of bells:

he used to hear sound similar to the ringing of bells, i.e. continuous sound and coming from all directions. It is most difficult form of wahiy

• Through an Angel in the Form of a Man:

generally angel Gabriel came in form of most handsome companion Dihya Kalbi( r.a.w.a)

• Through an Angel in his True Form:

Angel Gabriel also came to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w) in his actual angelic form three times .

Features of Revelation on holy Prophet ( s.a.w.s) (contd’)

True dreams:

sayyida Aisha (r.a) says: “whatever he dreamt always came out true like morning light (sahih bukhari, hadith no:3),when hypocrite of Medina had performed a spell on him, it was in his dream that he was informed of the method of breaking the spell.

Discourse with Allah:

The Holy Prophet (saw) spoke directly with Allah (swt) during the night of ascension( Miraj)

• Inspiration in the heart :

in one narration, prophet (s.a.w) said: “Angel Gabriel conveyed a message into my heart that no man can die until his ‘rizk’ or resources have been completed ( al-mustadrak hakim, v2,p4)

Wahiy and other forms of institutions

‘wahiy’ Kashf, ilhaam, etc

‘wahiy’ is specific for the Prophets.

Source is known

‘wahiy’ is obligatory and part of religion

Kashf and ilhaam relates to saints

Source is not known with certainty

Kashf and ilhaam cab be obeyed if and only if it is verified by Quran and sunnah

Angels

Scientific approachJust to understand, angels resemble with the electromagnetic force (electromagnetic radiation). angels are made of light and light is made of electromagnetic radiation, which travels at 186,000 miles per second. electromagnetic force obeys the laws of nature incessantly without mistake Hence it has a one-dimensional nature like angels. It is invisible except in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum (4,000 to 7,000 Angstroms wavelength). The Qur'an mentions that angels came in -the form of humans. This is also not difficult to understand because we can create Holographic images, which are three-dimensional human figures that can talk using laser light and white light (visible light)

Characteristics of angelsThey are created from light, before mankind

They do not eat or drink

They do not get bored or tired of remembering and worshipping Allah

They differ in sizes. narrated in hadees :"I saw Gabriel descending from heaven, and his great size filled the space between heaven and earth." [ sahih Muslim].

They have wings; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw Gabriel in his true form. He had six hundred wings, each of which covered the horizon.

Characteristics of angels (contd’)Their speed: The greatest speed known to man today is the speed of light; the angels are able to travel much faster than this. Hardly had an enquirer completed a question to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but Gabriel would bring the answer from Allah.

Their number is known only to Allah. Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) says:, "Then I was taken up to the al-Bayt al-M’amoor: every day seventy thousand angels visit it and leave, never returning to it again, another [group] coming after them." [al-Bukhaari].
