Building Safe Neighborhoods Together - 2012 National Night Out

On August 7th, neighborhoods throughout the City of San Jose came together to celebrate National Night Out 2012! This nationwide

community event was formed to heighten gang and drug awareness, promote police and

community partnerships, and put criminals on notice of neighborhood organizing. This year, over

1,000 residents in Council District 7 came together to promote peace and join the fight against crime in their

neighborhoods. Festivities included barbeques, ice cream socials, block parties, potlucks, resource fairs, live music and much more. My office also

gave out free anti-crime t-shirts. I look forward to a year of less crime and more participation

from residents to kick crime out of our neighborhoods.

SAVE THE DATE! OPERATION PROM

DRESS 2013 Save the Date! Operation Prom Dress 2013 Dress Distribution will be on March 10, 2013 at the Seven Trees Community Center, 3590 Cas Drive, San Jose, CA 95111 from 9:00am-1:00pm. Since 2009, we have given out more than 3000 dresses to girls through Operation Prom Dress---A prom dress drive to encourage residents of the City of San Jose to

donate new or gently-used dresses for high school girls who may not be able to afford a dress for prom. The goal is to ensure that every girl gets a dress for prom and not have to worry about the expenses. Through generous donations we collected more than 1900 dresses last year. Over 1000 high school girls had the opportunity to choose a dress to wear to their prom and take their dress to participating cleaners to clean their dress free of charge. About 100 girls also received raffled gift certificates for hair “up-do’s”, make-up sessions and make-up gift bags. This year, our goal is to collect 2000 dresses. We hope you will help us make dreams come true by donating new and gently used prom dresses for girls in our city. Dresses can be dropped off at city hall, 18th floor or city library branches and community centers. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at (408) 535- 4961.

2nd Annual Mid-Autumn Festival On September 22nd, my office along with the Miss Vietnam of Northern California organization hosted the 2nd Annual Mid Autumn Festival and Resource Fair at History Park at Kelley Park. This festival celebrates the diversity of San Jose and honors the traditional harvest festival dating back to 3,000 years ago where the celebrations start when the moon is full representing a life filled with prosperity. The festival was a tremendous success with over 5,000 children and their families in attendance. This event provided children and their families to gather and spend time together to enjoy a variety of activities such as live music and dance, talent show, fashion show, art contests, raffle prizes, and much more. We also had appearances by Kaiser’s Marina the Otter, San Jose Giants’

Gigante, and the San Jose Sharks’ Mobile Shark Tank. Some of San Jose’s best food trucks, including Banjara Bistro, Kona Ice South San Jose, Scoops SJ, We Sushi and Porky’s SJ came to introduce us to some of the finest cuisine on wheels! The festival also featured a resource fair that provided information and access to different programs, services and resources by local government and non-profit agencies. The evening ended with a free lantern giveaway and a traditional lantern parade lead by lion dancers. We hope everyone had a great time and look forward to see-ing you all again next year!

101/Yerba Buena/Capitol Expressway

Groundbreaking On September 17th the Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Federal Highway Administration and Caltrans began work on a new project that will make substantial improvements to the 101 freeway’s

in- terchange at Capitol Expressway and ramp modifications at Yerba Buena Road. In June 2012, Caltrans completed the first phase of the corridor improvements with the U.S. 101/Tully project. Now, headed by Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, construction of the second phase of the U.S. 101 corridor improvements will begin from Capitol Expressway to the Yerba Buena interchange. This phase includes the reconfiguration of the 101/Capitol inter-change, modifications to the Yerba Buena interchange featuring a new off-ramp, the addition of an auxiliary lane on U.S. 101, and landscaping at the Capitol and Tully interchanges. The project will be starting this September and is projected to last until December of 2013 or early January 2014. Thank you for your patience during these road improvements. This project is a significant component to improving safety and reducing traffic congestion along the Highway 101, Capitol Expressway and Yerba Buena corridor and will make a difference in the lives of the people that live and work in the City of San José.

Spring Flea Market On Saturday, June 16th, Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen joined the McLaughlin Corridor Neighborhood Association as they hosted their annual Spring Flea Market at the Umbarger Walkway on the corner of McLaughlin Avenue and Umbarger Road. Residents from all over District 7 were able to enjoy the 30 booths that sold everything from plants to children’s toys. Participants were also able to receive free reusable bags and magnets from Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen. MCNA also hosts other exciting events for their neighborhood, for more information, contact their hotline at (408) 578-8130.

Franklin McKinley Children’s Initiative As summer approached, parents involved in the Franklin McKinley Children’s Initiative were concerned that the lack of summer learning programs would hurt their children’s academic gains and put them at risk for summer learning loss and safe play. These ambitious parents took matters into their own hands to support their children’s education and keep them safe and occupied during the summer months by partnering with the Franklin McKinley Children's Initiative, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County and San Jose State. They recruited and

raised funds for a summer learning program that provided students with high quality arts activities and physical education, as well as college prep programs. Additionally, on Saturday September 29th, hundreds of residents attended the Franklin McKinley Children’s Initiative Health/Resource Fair. Residents were able to get information on a number of different health related issues as well as obtain information about other services and resources that are available. Services such as whooping cough shots and flu vaccinations were given to residents FREE of charge by Santa Clara County Health Department. A big thank you to Catholic Charities and all the volunteers that helped organize this wonderful event.

Fifth Annual Youth Job Fair The Fifth Annual Youth Job Fair was a great success! It was held on Saturday, October 13th at the Westfield Oakridge Shopping Center. Over 500 youth attended the event and we had over 25 employers come out to offer 200 jobs. Parents were also present to assist their children in filling out applications. In addition to seeking employment, youth attendees were also given the opportunity to connect with organizations that would help them learn how to fill out employment applications, write resumes, cover letters, and learn interview tips, among other valuable skills. I want to thank all of our sponsors for participating. I am glad that our job fair assisted some of our youth in finding gainful employment. Once again, thank you all for your support and I look forward to another successful job fair next year.

2012-2013 Budget Update 2013 budget in June with a small 1% cushion that will allow the City to avoid major service cuts and begin the process of restoring services. One of the major components of this year’s budget is the opening of four newly-constructed branch libraries, including the Seven Trees Library, which has been closed due to recent budget deficits. It is scheduled to be open in late January. The Council also put in an additional $2 million in funding for the City’s gang prevention programs, through the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force. This

allocation will serve the City’s at-risk youth and connect them with services and programs to get them out of the gang lifestyle. Even though we had a small surplus and many projects to fund and restore, I was successful at obtaining some funding for the following projects in the district:

Construction and maintenance of West Evergreen Park Reinstatement of transportation services for seniors to and from senior nutrition sites Homeless Encampments Clean Up Phase I Structural Improvements to the San Jose Municipal Stadium

Next year, the City Manager has projected a $22.5 million deficit, primarily due to an expected increase in retirement costs. As the City struggles to bridge that projected deficit, we ask that you continue to be engaged in this citywide effort, your input is highly valued. If you have questions about the city’s overall budget and these specific projects impacting our district, please contact my office at (408) 535-4907.
