“Sutherland, elected Washington’s Commissioner of Public Lands in
November 2000, has spent more than 20 years in elected office,
Including as Tacoma city councilman (1980-81), two terms as
Tacoma mayor (1982-85, 1986-89), and two terms as Pierce
County executive, beginning in 1992…Sutherland served in the
Military in the Korean War before coming to CWU. A 1959
Central graduate, he actually came to school on a music
scholarship to study voice and ‘was part of the Wayne Hertz
organization for the next four years,’ he says, referring to the

Clark Daffern ’73 College of Business
“Daffern, before joining his partners in the establishment of the
Pacific Rim Financial Group (PRFG) in Seattle, spent 17 years as a
senior vice president for daily operations of 75 nursing homes and
retirement centers…At PRFG, he has become a specialist in the
design and implementation of a variety of retirement plans, with
the aim of allowing employers to create innovative retirement
programs for their employees…Daffern has served as chair of the
CWU Foundation and with the board of advisors for the university’s
College of Business. An active member of the Greater Seattle
Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Chamber of
Commerce of Greater Federal Way, Daffern also recently chaired the
South King County Coalition, a project intended to address the needs

“Hall is a professor emeritus at the University of Kansas. A 1951
Central graduate, he completed a 40-year career in education…
While at Kansas, Hall directed an inner-city community research
project that is still on-going after 36 years. It was awarded the
Council for Exceptional Children Research Award in 1996. He
has been published in more than 100 journals and books, and he
received the ‘Fred Keller Award for Excellence in Behavioral
Education’ from the American Psychological Association and
was selected for the President’s Committee on Mental

“Reneau, from Austin, Texas, is a consulting geologist. He formed
Reneau Exploration and Development Company, an independent oil
exploration and production company, in 1980; and Reneau and

Susan Swartz ’81 College of Business
“Susan Swartz, a highly-successful tax accountant, graduated from
Central in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance
and a minor in economics. She earned a master’s degree in taxation
from Golden Gate University in 1983. A 22-year employee and tax
partner at the big-four firm KPMG LLP, Schwartz provides tax
advice to ‘high net worth’ individuals, corporate executives, and

“Don Duncan is being honored for his life-long accomplishments
in education. At Central, he earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation
administration in 1951 and a master’s degree in school psychology
and counseling in 1955. He later earned an Ed.D. in counseling,
school psychology and higher education, from Washington State

“Bonaudi is being honored for his outstanding achievements in
higher education administration. He earned a bachelor’s in
zoology from Central in 1964, as well as a master’s degree in
biology from Wayne State University, Michigan, and his Ed.D. in
administration and organizational leadership from the University of
