ExPLORE ASIA PACIFIC WITh Silver DiScovererThere are still lands out there untouched by time or tourists, tribal villages where few travellers have ever set foot, unchartered atolls and coral islets vibrant with marine life, and vast yet fragile rainforests where nature reigns supreme. Beginning March 2014, our latest ship Silver Discoverer sets sail to destinations like these in the most remote corners of Asia Pacific.

For adventure of a truly epic spirit, The Kimberley has few equals. Largely inaccessible and protected by its very remoteness, this region in north-western Australia offers jaw-dropping landscapes with ancient human history. here you can glide so close to a waterfall you can feel the mist on your face, or search for raptors in vast wetlands while saltwater crocodiles lurk just beneath the surface. And while sweeping views are certainly abundant in every corner of The Kimberley, it is the

glory of the detail, viewed close up, that bring you the most rewarding memories – cruising so close to a whale you can see the barnacles on his back, or browsing through an Aboriginal rock art gallery painted over 20,000 years ago. There are many beautiful places on Earth, but none are more beautiful than The Kimberley.

For nature lovers, New Zealand’s Sub-Antarctic Islands are recognised as one of the worlds’ greatest biodiversity ‘hotspots’ and we are privileged to be among the few allowed in these protected reserves. here you can cruise within feet of a rare yellow-eyed Penguin, admire a Wandering Albatross lifting his wings to take flight, or witness the raw power of a bellowing sea lion bull staking out his territory. The list of birds is staggering – 126 species. The islands are home to 10 of the 21

species of albatross, and six of the 17 species of penguins. While more than 95% of the world’s population of New Zealand sea lions breed here. Little wonder that all have been designated National Nature Reserves. The stage is set for a thrilling adventure with the rarest of animals and a history as rich as treasured jewels for you to meet with. Step onboard Silver Discoverer and do just that … discover a world mostly untouched.

Experience an adventure like no other – east of Indonesia, islands of infinite diversity and home to some of the most intrepid travel destinations on the planet; to the rainforests of Borneo and isolated villages in the mountainous hinterlands of Sulawesi, home of the Torajan people with their captivating and dramatic death rituals and timeless traditions. There are underwater wonders, too – in the staggering biodiversity of the

Coral Triangle, the global epicentre of marine biodiversity, including parts of Indonesia, the Philippines and Western Papua. Not only reefs, but wrecks from WWII – a true diver’s nirvana. And for a change of pace you can splash down in an underground river through soaring caverns and the occasional sound of a bat; the Puerto Princesa underground river is one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”.

The islands at the western end of the Pacific are some of the most idyllic on Earth – lush, tropical edens with a stunning diversity of cultural and natural landscapes. There are four states in Micronesia, each with its own distinctive culture and traditions, yet with common cultural bonds such as the importance of the clan system, and a traditional lifestyle centred on gardens, reefs, ocean ancestors and still light years away from the 21st century. These exquisite archipelagos boast

rainforests, rare and endemic wildlife, and incredible diversity of tribal cultures. In 2015 we journey to the emerald isles of Polynesia – Fiji and Tonga with their jaw-dropping beauty, the Marquesas, jewels of French Polynesia, and the lush islands of Samoa. This is a geographically complex region of unique ecosystems and species, above and beneath the warm tropical waters, and you will have many opportunities to experience both with our frequent zodiac outings.

LOCAL CULTURE

• Follow the historic wake of Vitus Bering

• Indigenous peoples• Remote villages

Because of its remoteness and impassable ice floes in winter, the Sea of Okhotsk is one of the world’s least-explored and most biologically productive seas.

In the Kuril Islands, birding is nothing short of spectacular. The Stellar Sea Eagle soars overhead, and even whales, once hunted almost to extinction, are now returning to these frigid waters. On the Kamchatka Peninsula, the world’s largest brown bear hunts along rivers churning with salmon that roar through taiga forests. It is a “Land of Fire and Ice,” a geothermal wonderland for photographers. Some expeditions continue from Kamchatka across the Bering Sea to the Aleutians and the Alaska and Kenai peninsulas, some of the most inaccessible places in North America. These waters support vast populations of fish and birds, and countless numbers of sea mammals. An expedition through this wilderness will surely be a trip of a lifetime!

SPIRITUAL PLACES - KAKADU & ThE ROCKDeparts from Sydney or Darwin, Australia5 nights pre- or post-cruise

Darwin, a modern tropical capital set on a harbour twice the size of Sydney’s, is one of Australia’s most successful multicultural cities. The Darwin region’s population of around 105,000 has more than 50 nationalities, including the Larrakia Aboriginal people. The tropical climate encourages outdoor living which is clustered around the beaches of Darwin harbour. The city is closer to Jakarta than it is to Canberra - no wonder it is referred to as the Gateway to Asia.

There’s wild romanticism about Kakadu’s terrain, a 50,000-year-old living canvas upon which the region’s rich history is painted in all the tones of the Aboriginal Dreamtime. This is a land infused with spiritual richness and history that can only be understood by visiting the area. Kakadu contains one of the greatest concentrations of rock-art sites in the world and the flora is among the richest in northern Australia, with more than 17,000 plant species making up a mosaic of vegetation. This diversity is part of what makes the area so alluring. The proliferation of wildlife is beyond what any can imagine – 280 bird species, approximately 60 mammals and 117 reptiles, among them eleven types of turtle and tortoise. yet it is the crocodile that is perhaps of the most interest to visitors.

Fly from Darwin to Ayers Rock to experience Australia’s ‘Red Centre’ home to the world’s largest monolith, Uluru (Ayers Rock). Desert dunes, rugged landforms and Aboriginal culture provide an authentic Australian experience.

GOLD COAST AND hUNTER vALLEyDeparts from Sydney or Brisbane, Australia5 nights pre- or post-cruise

Brisbane is a dynamic city shaped by its history, climate, open spaces and diversity. It is Australia’s third largest city and the state capital of Queensland.

Located on the Queensland and New South Wales border just a one hour drive south of Brisbane, it has world famous beaches, nightlife, shopping, theme parks and a tropical hinterland to explore.

Fly into Sydney to visit the world-class wineries of the hunter valley, one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions. Established in the early 1800’s the hunter was Australia’s first commercial wine producing area. Bordered to the east by the sea and by rugged mountain ranges, the hunter valley has developed a tradition for fine hospitality. Elegant victorian buildings reflect the prosperity of the early settlers.

Silver DiScovererSilversea’s third expedition ship is expertly engineered to explore the most isolated archipelagos of the Pacific. her small size and shallow draft allow close-up access to rugged coasts well beyond the reach of ordinary vessels. her recent refurbishment helps guests to maximise their experience and build a genuine connection with the regions they visit.

Spacious decks and panoramic public rooms mean the drama of the unexpected is never far from view. A fleet of zodiacs allows exploration from the water or remote landings anywhere nature or curiosity dictate. Since many of our expeditions sail to some of the world’s most pristine coral reef systems, there’s a glass-bottom boat for underwater viewing

along with a full complement of snorkelling equipment and a dive programme that includes tanks, compressors and weights.

We’ve also taken great care to assemble a truly outstanding Expedition Team, composed of experts in the culture, history and wildlife of the destinations, to present informal talks, guide zodiac outings and lead small-group explorations ashore. While back on board, every creature comfort awaits: a spacious, ocean-view suite, in-suite bar and the head-to-toe pampering of a butler; elegant lounges and open bars where fellow travellers gather to swap tales about their day’s adventures; and cuisine that meets Silversea’s standards of

culinary excellence. Imaginative menus in The Restaurant feature both regional offerings and signature dishes by Relais & Châteaux.

Additional amenities include a sun-catching pool deck, a library, a fitness centre, and a beauty and massage room — particularly alluring after an adventurous day ashore.

SOCIETyAn Exclusive Partnership

In an exclusive partnership, the Royal Geographical Society and Silversea Expeditions have joined forces to spread knowledge collated from centuries of scientific exploration. The renowned Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) and Silversea are pleased

to provide our guests embarking on expedition voyages aboard Silver Discoverer detailed scientific and historical information about the variety of places they will be able to explore in the Russian Far East, The Kimberley and New-Zealand Sub-Antarctic islands, Southeast Asia

and the islands of Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia.

Detail from a map showing the routes of the voyage of La Pérouse during the years 1785-88.

Russia Far East (Sea of Oskhosk, Kamchakta)

A land of dramatic volcanic activity and remarkable wildlife, the Russian Far East is documented in the Collections of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) through historic early maps and charts, later through some of the earliest documentary photographs of the region, and in Russian language journals and other documents which are uniquely found in Helsinki, St Petersburg and at the Society’s London home.

Explore the work of Danish-born navigator (and the first European scientific explorer of Siberia), Vitus Bering, whose work was inspired and sponsored by Peter the Great and later by Czarina Catherine the First.

At the beginning of the 18th century, this vast region was still a blank on the map. Czar Peter initially sent Bering to establish whether Asia and North America were linked by land, with Bering returning later to command the ‘Great Northern Expedition’ which comprised over 3,000 men and would

S ILVER D ISCOVERER VOYAGES 2014/2015 27

pave the way for future Russian expansion to the East. The extent of Bering’s expertise resulted in a mass of scientific and cultural data being returned to the West.

Later, celebrate the important scientific expedition of 18th century French Comte de la Pérouse, whose 1786 voyage was the first European scientific expedition to explore the Sea of Okhtosk, where his delight in reaching a region unexplored by his contemporary, Captain James Cook was matched by the extraordinary discoveries made aboard the L’Astrolabe and Boussole, including some of the very first evidence to document the lives of the Tartar people and their culture. Much material was collected and carefully recorded before being sent overland from Siberia to Paris, where these new discoveries were enthusiastically received by eager audiences throughout Europe.

Fast-forward to pre-revolutionary Russia, when between 1908-09, Theodor Pavlovitch Riabushinsky led a botanical expedition to Kamchatka, where he remained for two years, collecting plant specimens. The accounts of the botanical results of the expedition were published in “Voyage en Kamtchatka en 1908–1909” and forming part of the official account of the expedition (1913) and contributing to the first comprehensive botanical record of the USSR.

From this remarkable and isolated land of rugged beauty, much has been learnt to enhance our knowledge of geography, science and cultural history through the past 300 years; the Society’s Collections provide a window onto the work of these early travellers and their researches for the modern audience.

New Zealand Sub-Antarctic Islands (Macquarie Islands, Antipodes Islands)

Perhaps less well-known internationally than Antarctic expeditions championed by Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton, the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-14), led by Australian geologist Douglas Mawson departed on the Aurora for Macquarie Island in December 1911, en route for the continent of Antarctica. In addition to gathering scientific data the expedition also provided its official photographer, Australian Frank Hurley with the opportunity to capture images, his first in the region and a prelude to the extraordinary photographs captured on his return to Antarctica with Shackleton on board the Endurance Expedition (1914-17). Delve into the results of the expedition’s discoveries and explore the accounts of earlier nineteenth-century whaling, sealing and exploratory voyages, including those of Dumont D’Urville in 1839 and polar explorer James Clark Ross and learn more about the history behind the naming of islands in the Sub-Antarctic.

Southeast Asia (Borneo, Komodo Islands, Maumere, Alor Islands)

From early chart documentation created by Alexander Dalrymple (1737-1808), the Scottish geographer and leading champion of the 18th century theory of the existence of Terra Australis Incognita to the remarkable studies of Alfred Russel Wallace, the nineteenth-century father of ‘biogeography’ whose researches in the Malay Archipelago led to the advancement of the theory of evolution, shared with Charles Darwin and the definition of the ‘Wallace line’ which divides between Borneo and Sulawesi; discover the evidence of early map, chart and archive material held at the Society. Explore the historical engagement of science and trade in the region from early Dutch expeditions to exploit the spice trade in the 16th century to the foundation of the Dutch East India Company and subsequent explorations of the region by European travellers.

Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia (Asmat, Raja Ampat, Rangigora, Bora Bora)

Explore the worlds of the Pacific Ocean through the accounts of early European scientists and navigators, including the îsles sous les vents of French Polynesia, first thought to be named by Captain James Cook as part of the ‘Society Islands’ archipelago. Share in the discoveries made by the nineteenth-century French Captain Louis Isidore Duperrey and Dumont D’Urville, aboard the Coquille, later re-named the Astrolabe. Their scientific discoveries were recorded in the seminal account “Voyage Autour du Monde” a five volume account

created by D’Urville, complete with remarkable first illustrations of the people and places to then have been seen in Europe based on over 5,000 botanical and insect specimens brought back to Paris. Compare and contrast this early documentation with the later work of photographers, archaeologists and anthropologists working in the region, including early photographic work by the intrepid traveller Mrs Patrick Ness. Savour too the literary accounts of travel writer and fiction author Robert Louis Stevenson, inspired during his journey into the Pacific and his residence on Samoa in the late nineteenth-century.
