Day 1 Cuzco
Cuzco, ancient capital of the Inca Empire and considered to be the oldest continuously
inhabited city in the Western Hemisphere, is situated at 3,310m above the sea level in the
Peruvian Andes. After your arrival, transfer to your hotel followed by free time to
acclimatize to the high altitude. Hotel pick up at 1.30pm for a city tour including the
Plaza de Aramas, the Cathedral, Santo Domingo Church and the Incan ruins of
Sacsayhuaman, Puca Pucara, Kenko, Tambo Machay. Drop off at your hotel around
6.30pm.
Day 2 Cuzco - Sacred Valley - Cuzco
Pick up at 8.30am for a full day tour to the Sacred Valley including the bustling Indian
market at Pisac. The local merchants offer for sale all sorts of handicrafts, textiles and
ceramic goods, plates, ashtrays, necklaces and replicas of pre-Hispanic pottery. There are
also woolen ponchos; sweaters, blankets and bags made from llama and alpaca. Lunch at
a local restaurant in Urubamba, followed by a visit of the magnificent fortress at
Ollantaytambo. Return to Cuzco in the early evening. [BL]
Day 3 Cuzco - Machu Picchu
Early morning transfer (around 5.45am) to the railway station to board the train for a 3½
hour scenic train journey through the Urubamba Valley to Machu Picchu (2,280m), the
legendary lost city of the Incas. For centuries Machu Picchu was buried in jungle until the
American historian Hiram Bingham stumbled upon it almost by accident in 1911.
Although little is still known about the ‘lost city of the Incas’ it is obvious, by the quality
of the stonework and the abundance of ornamental sites, that Machu Picchu must have
been an important ceremonial centre. After a guided tour and a delicious lunch you are
free to explore the ruins on your own. Overnight in Aguas Calientes. [BL]
Day 4 Machu Picchu - Cuzco
Spend the morning at your leisure - we highly recommend that you watch the sunrise
over the ruins. Departure from the train station at Aguas Calientes at 3.30pm. After your
arrival in Cuzco at 7.30pm, transfer to your hotel. [B]
Day 5 Cuzco
The tour concludes after breakfast with a departure transfer. [B]
