Disaster Relief Projects is an initiative developed by Shigeru Ban as part of a humanitarian mission in locations affected by natural disasters, giving through this action, sustainable archi-tectural projects to communities needed around the world.

Shigeru Ban (Shigeru Ban Architects Tokyo-Paris-New York) is an accomplished Jap-anese and international architect, most famous for his innovative work with paper, particularly recycled cardboard paper tubes used to quickly and efficiently house disaster victims. SBA’s consistent design philosophy is to create uniquely free and open space with concrete rationality of structure and construction method. It seeks to challenge the existing construction method by using easily obtainable off-the-shelf materials in innovative and unprecedented structural/construction systems.

In this occasion, after the earthquake occurred in Haiti this past 12 of january, Shigeru Ban has designed a refuge prototype shelter to be constructed in a local-ity in the outskirts of Port-au-Prince and to realize this project he counts with the collaboration of two rec-ognized academic institutions in the Dominican Re-public and the United States: Universidad Iberoameri-cana UNIBE (Santo Domingo, Dom. Rep.) through its school of architecture and Harvard University (Cam-bridge, Ma, U.S.A.) represented by himself as a vis-iting professor in its Graduate School of Design.

1st phase: Initial trip - Workshop (realized) This stage was carried out with the first visit of Shigeru Ban to the Dominican Republic and Haiti (13-16 Febru-ary 2010) to accomplish a first approach with the insti-tutions and collaborators with the project. Also work-shop was organized in Santo Domingo with UNIBE’s students, who assembled the refuge prototype de-signed by Ban and fabricated by his students in Harvard.

2nd phase: Construction of emergency shelters (April 2010) This stage would consist in constructing, on the se-lected site, 50 emergency shelters that would be fabricated by students in Santo Domingo (with lo-cal materials), and later to be assembled by a group of students of both universities in Haiti.

THE SHELTER

The students will fabricate the shelters in their own workshop out of local materials (paper tubes, rope, plywood, pastic tarp, etc). The size of the shelter is 4m x 4m and is meant to host one family.

The selected community is lo-cated in the outskirts of Port-au-Prince: Tabarre. An improvised establishment that counts at the moment with 50 families living on a vast land that surrounds the area where their destroyed houses lie.
