The South Congress Branch Library is significant as it attempts to modernize the “functional” library template. However it’s wrong to assume that “modernization” means technologically driven. For this project it meant “Hybridization”. Finding a way to logically integrate programs within the same location. This branch library was designed to accommodate both the short term and long term user. The short term user would have access to facilities off the street, an information desk, the possibility of local art and commerce through the use of the exterior space. The long term user would have computer and software access, group spaces, and various reading rooms. And both types of users would have access to a flexible auditorium in which to screen various presentations/movies.

Austin Hybrid_Analysis

As defined in the Plaza Saltillo Station Area Plan, “The Transit Oriented District (T.O.D.) is a compact, walkable, mixed-use development connected to high quality public transportation, which balances the need for sufficient density to support convenient transit service with the scale of the adjacent community.”

Within two decades The Plaza Saltillo T.O.D. (located between E 6th Street and E 3rd Street) will be enveloped in the urban evolution that is downtown Austin.

The solution is to design a modern housing structure that affords the opportunity for multiple uses as well as addresses the existing culture of the site. The housing project must also take into account the types of possible residents within the area ranging from single, couples, and small families.

The Austin HybridMixed Use Housing_Saltillo Plaza_East Austin

When compared to its west counterpart East Austin does exude its own “Flavor”. however when broken down into its basic parts it’s not surprising the changes the neighborhood has gone through due to the fluctuating demographic. East Austin has gone from being Austin’s “poor and colored” neighborhood to Austin’s “up and coming and colorful” neighborhood. One could spend all day debating the politics of East Austin’s gentrification however two questions would still remain, “How best to occupy the newly available space” and “How much should existing infrastructure influence design?”

1)A public connection_ The design offers an area beneath the northern most part of the complex that would serve as potential retail space. However the space is off the street giving it some privacy and perhaps the opportunity to become destination style retail. 2)Unit Type_The complex is composed of both duplex and triplex units with the intention of building up instead of out. The units would accommodate couples, and smaller families.3)Private/Public outdoor space_ The exterior space would serve the residents and community

CASCADE

Page 23: Dino Padron_Resume_Portfolio

The end goal for this project was the production of a luminaire/lamp combination that would effectively achieve desired lighting qualities. My team sought to create a diffuse glow that would contribute to Goldsmith courtyards’ already comfortable and relaxing environment. The result was “CASCADE”, a manipulatable luminaire that would allow the user choice over lighting quality and would be easily transportable.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

“CASCADE” stands at 18 inches tall, with a diameter of 7 inches. It's octagonal shape makes it more ergonomically efficient in terms of fitting the human hand. Made from redwood, stained a deep red, and hinged/screwed together for added structural integrity CASCADE emits a handcrafted visual aesthetic.

The light fixture makes use of two Battery Powered led puck lights powered by 3 AA batteries and a pressure operated switch. Each lamp has a voltage of 1.5V and provides a total output of 85 lumens and has a power of 3 watts attributing to an Efficacy of 28.3 lumens/watt. Most importantly the color temperature of the lamps is a warm white: 3000 Kelvin.

Material_Light Studies

Architecture is poetry. Anallyzing it takes time and effort, so most people are willing to accept it for what it is unless it begins to interfere with them directly. These models were just some of many attempts at breaking down just where the “Poetry” in architecture lies. Light, texture, vertexes, color, transparency, mass, material, reflection, perspective, and sound. all of these words have one thing in common: they can be quantified. Studies can be performed for any of these categories: illumination can be tested, sound can be recorded, texture can be graded. This information is processed and saved, swatches of material are labeled according to their properties and are distributed, same with lighting systems, and glass/acrylic. The point is the properties we design with are far from random, we find them in the natural world and mimic them. We crave nature’s variety, These models are reprsentations of those categories in their most “primal” form.

Page 27: Dino Padron_Resume_Portfolio

Form Studies

This project was the culmination of all 14 students’ studies into the “poetry” of Design. The “Defamilirization” of a common hallway using our models, recycled materials, and our theories as to what common poetic categories would transform the hallway into something uncommon. Recycled materials (styrofoam, black paper, flourescent bulbs acted as a “base” elliminating the characteristics of the existing Hallway and dividing it into new sections. These new sections were then further divided through the use of similar models (models that showcased similar theories). The end product was an art gallery of sorts; an amalgam of poetic theories and something far more complicated and less functional than the original. The success of the project depends on the viewer.

City of Austin “Raptor” Rehabilitation CenterAustin, TX_Intersection of Mopac Expressway and 5th Street

The Austin Raptor Rehabilitation Center is a facility for the treatment of birds of prey within the Austin urban area. The location was a site of our choice within the confines of a 1000’ x 500’ plot at the intersection of Mopac Expressway and 5th Street in Austin, Texas. The facility itself is private only accessed by workers and the occasional vetted individual however it was required to have some sort of public “face” without compromising the treatment of birds within. The location chosen in this proposal takes advantage of both proximity to the existing public trail as well as the topography of the site. In doing so moments of private and public interaction are created while interior programs are differentiated through changes in elevation.
