Digitial Photography for Dummies- Exposure Feature of a Digital Camera

Digital cameras have brought about a new level of enjoyment to picture taking. Clicking good quality pictures required high degree of skill and experience in the good old days. Not anymore- own a DSLR camera and you too can become an expert photographer and click amazing pictures as and when you please with a little bit of training.

Digital cameras are very convenient as compared to film cameras. Operating costs of DSLR cameras are low since there is no question of buying and developing films. Most importantly you can verify the quality of a captured image and can immediately take a retake of the picture if you are not happy with it for any reason. Stored pictures in a DSLR camera can be viewed on a TV or a PC. You can share them across social media platforms with your friends and relatives and print them in case of a need.

Before buying a digital camera bear in mind the following

Set your budget- once you are aware of your spending limit you can go in for a camera which best suits your needs within monetary limits.

Check out reviews of popular digital camera brands before actually visiting a store to buy it Shortlist a few based on the customer reviews that you may have read up and check out stores where you can actually buy it.

Lastly after finalizing your choice, check out how much of learning you will be required to do before you actually start using it. Digital cameras are quite different from the standard ones. Hence it may be worthwhile for you to sign up for digital camera tutorials- online or onsite to get yourself familiarized with stuff like how to initially set up a camera and how to click during different times of a day.

Picture Quality and Exposure

The brightness, darkness or subtleness of an image taken from your digital camera will depend on “exposure” — which is the amount of light that hits the image-sensor array. The more light- greater will be the exposure and hence brighter would be the image. Restricted exposure which essentially means not sufficient light will make an image too dark.

In a typical DSLR Camera following exposure options will be there:

Automatic setting: Most digital cameras have an automatic exposure setting which is a blessing to novices like me. Without too much doing on your part this setting automatically makes all the adjustments for you.

Priority: In certain models all that users have to set manually is either the shutter speed (the priority setting) or the aperture. The camera takes care of all the remaining exposure setting automatically.

Manual: In the manual DSLR cameras users can set both the aperture and shutter speed themselves.

Sensor-based exposure controls: There is yet another option available in some digital cameras which make use of chips in the image-sensor array. These chips in the image sensor array turn on and off for different periods of time, resulting in more or less light being captured.

Finally there are cameras in which the exposure is managed by increasing or decreasing the strength of the electrical charge that a chip emits in response to a specific amount of light.
