FOUNDERS• Dexster Smith and Joel Lloyd Bellenson, experts in

bioinformatics and genomics, started from the following idea:

“If we can find the essence of a biological smell and build a profile, we can digitalize and broadcast it.”

PROCESS• digitizes the scent

– by digitizing the scent along two parameters the chemical make and its place in scent spectrum

• then digitized into a small file– which can be transmitted to the internet

attached to the enhanced web content.

SMELL-O-VISION

• was a system that released odor during the projection of a film 

• so that the viewer could "smell" what was happening in the movie

• created by Hans Laube 

• made its only appearance in the 1960 film Scent of Mystery

• The process injected 30 odors into a movie theater's seats

ISMELL• The iSmell or iSmell Personal Scent

Synthesizer was a computer peripheral device developed by DigiScents in 2001.

• connected to a personal computer via USB or serial port 

• Was designed to emit a smell when a user visited a web site or opened an email.

• contained a cartridge with 128 "primary odors" – which could be mixed to replicate natural and man-

made odors.

• DigiScents had indexed thousands of common odors, which could be coded, digitized, and embedded into web pages or email.

WORKING OF SCENTDOME• Trisenx, a company in Savannah,

Georgia, has released a device called a Scent Dome that will allow users to smell products sold online, or create and email their own scents

• This intelligent aroma diffuser spreads the scent for 30 seconds and stops for two and half minutes and it continues this pattern for four hours.

• Developed by Jenny Tillotson, a researcher and a designer at the University of the Arts in London, England

• the world's first interactive scent outfit

• generates scent according to wearer’s mood

• 'second skin' because it interacts with the wearer and their environment.

• Scentsory is a mobile communication device that works with the senses of smell, sight, hearing and touch, giving users the ability to experience remote communication on multi-sensory levels
