DIFFERENT TYPES OF LITURATURE

Historical fiction is fiction that is set in the past. It may contain references to actual people and significant events in history.

Example -the short story “The Dog of Pompeii”is is set in a real time and place, but the characters are fictional.

DRAMA• Drama-A drama or

play is a form of literature meant to be performed to an an audience.

• Examples: “A Mid Summer Nights Dream” by William Shakespeare

• A folk tale is a simple story that has been passed down from generation to generation by mouth. The characters are usually common people

• Examples:Rapunzel

•A tall tale is a humorous,exaggerated story.

•The stories Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill

TALL TALE

Essay

An essay is a short work of nonfiction that deals with a single subject. You can express ideas or feelings to analyze a topic.

•An example is “All I really needed to know I learned in kindergarten” by Robert fulghum

Biography

• The True life story, of a person written by another person.

• Example: The Pride of Puerto Rico by Robert Paul Walker

Autobiography

• A person’s true life story told by that person.

• Example: “The Story of My Life”, by Helen Keller

A fairy tale is a fantasy story that has royalty (princesses , kings, and queens) as main characters and usually a lot of magic.

Example- “The Little Mermaid” and “Sleeping Beauty” by Hans Christian Anderson

A short story is a form of fiction that is between 5-30 pages and has all of the elements of fiction in a fiction novel. (setting, conflict, plot, theme, etc)

“Cricket in the Road” is a perfect example of a short story by Michael Anthony

A fable is a brief story that teaches a lesson about life.

In many fables, the characters are animals that act and speak like human beings.

A fable often ends with a moral a statement that summarizes its lesson. “The wolf and the House Dog” is an example of a fable.

Poetry

• A type of literature, in which ideas, images and feelings are expressed- written in verse

• Example: “I’m Nobody! Who Are You?” by Emily Dickinson

Literature that contains at least one or more fantastic or unreal element. Example: “ThePhantom Tollbooth”, by: Norton Juster

Legends

A legend is a story that is handed down from the past and may be stretched over time- based on a real person, but exaggerated over time.

Examples: Daniel Boone, Johnny Apple seed, and Buffalo bill

A type of fiction that is set in the future or on other planets and focuses on possible advancement in science, or what the future may hold.

Example- “The Fun They Had” by Isaac Asimov
