Diferent styles o Leadership
People are exposed to a broad and ever growing variety of theories that explains the concept
and the practice of leadership, albeit, today’s leadership experts still can’t dare ignore
theorists like, Maslow, Smith, Barnard, Deming, Mayo, Fayol, eber, !amel, etc" who
have crafted the most f#ndamental definitions of leadership and its co#ntless characteristics$
Some of the types of leadership were selected to help leadership st#dents and readers
#nderstand this concept with a little more clarity$ My main p#rpose here is to provide a brief
overview of the more dominant types of leadership$ %t is important to note that this
s#bmission attempts to single o#t some types of leadership models not all$ %t is not intended
to introd#ce any new theory$ %t is posted to help some of yo# who had re&#ested my opinion
abo#t different types of leadership$
'#tocratic (eadership ) the a#tocratic leader is given the power to make decisions alone,
having total a#thority$ *hey stand in master of the people and impose their wills and no one is
allowed to challenge them$ *his is the style #sed by the +atholic +h#rch for example,
dictators and monarchs$ n the other end, this leadership style is seems to be good for
employees that need close s#pervision to perform certain tasks$ +reative employees and team
players resent this type of leadership, since they are #nable to enhance processes or decision
making, res#lting in -ob dissatisfaction$
B#rea#cratic leadership ) *he b#rea#cratic leader believes more in very
str#ct#red proced#res and tends to bend over the pre.established meas#res rather it was
s#ccessf#l or not$ *his type of leadership has no space to explore new ways to solve problems
and is #s#ally slow paced to ens#re adherence to the ladders stated by the company$ (eaders
ens#re that all the steps have been followed prior to sending it to the next level of a#thority$
/niversities, hospitals, banks and government #s#ally re&#ire this type of leader in their
organi0ations to ens#re &#ality, increase sec#rity and decrease corr#ption$ (eaders who wo#ld
like to speed #p the process will experience fr#stration and anxiety and are not welcome$
+harismatic leadership ) the charismatic leader leads by inf#sing energy and eagerness into
their team members$ ' charismatic leader is someone who is often on the r#n$ S1he is not
someone who feels pleased with any type of stationary sit#ation$ *his type of leader has to be
committed to the organi0ation for the long r#n$ %f the s#ccess of the division or pro-ect is
attrib#ted to the leader and not the team, charismatic leaders may become a risk for the
company by deciding to resign for advanced opport#nities$ %t takes a company time and hard
work to gain the employees’ confidence back with other type of leadership after they have
committed themselves to the magnetism of a charismatic leader$
Democratic leadership or participative leadership ) the democratic leader listens to the
team’s ideas and st#dies them, b#t hold the responsibility to make the final decision$

ownership, feeling their inp#t was considered when the final decision was taken$ hen
changes arises, this type of leadership helps the team assimilate the changes better and more
rapidly than other styles, knowing they were cons#lted and contrib#ted to the decision
making process, minimi0ing resistance and intolerance$ ' shortcoming of this leadership style
is that it has diffic#lty when decisions are needed in a short period of time or at the moment$
(aisse0.faire leadership ) the laisse0.faire leader gives no contin#o#s feedback
or s#pervision beca#se the employees are highly experienced and need little s#pervision to
obtain the expected o#tcome$ *his type of style is also associated with leaders that don’t lead
at all, failing in s#pervising team members, res#lting in lack of control and higher costs, bad
service or fail#re to meet deadlines$ %n government this is what the type of leadership which
may drive to anarchy$
People.oriented leadership) *he people.oriented leader is the one that, in order to comply
with effectiveness and efficiency, s#pports, trains and develops his personnel, increasing -ob
satisfaction and gen#ine interest to do a good -ob$
Servant leadership ) the servant leader facilitates goal accomplishment by giving it steam
members what they need in order to be prod#ctive$ *his leader is an instr#ment employees
#se to reach the goal rather than a commanding voice that moves to change$ *his leadership
style, in a manner similar to democratic leadership, tends to achieve the res#lts in a slower
timeframe than other styles, altho#gh employee engagement is higher$
*ask.oriented leadership ) the task.oriented leader foc#ses on the -ob, and concentrates on
the specific tasks assigned to each employee to reach goal accomplishment$ *his leadership
style s#ffers the same motivational iss#es as a#tocratic leadership, showing no involvement
in the teams needs$ %t re&#ires close s#pervision and control to achieve expected res#lts
2Fiedler, 34567$ 'nother name for this is deal maker and is linked to a first phase in managing
change, enhance, according to the 8organi0e with chaos9 approach$
*ransactional leadership ) the transactional leader is given power to perform certain tasks
and reward or p#nish for a team’s performance$ %t gives the opport#nity to the manager to
lead the gro#p and the gro#p agrees to follow his lead to accomplish a predetermined goal in
exchange for something else$ Power is given to the leader to eval#ate, correct and train
s#bordinates when prod#ctivity is not #p to the desired level and reward effectiveness when
expected o#tcome is reached$
*ransformational leadership ) the transformation leader motivates its team to be effective
and efficient$ +omm#nication is the base for goal achievement foc#sing the gro#p in the final
desired o#tcome or goal attainment$ *his leader is highly visible and #ses chain of command
to get the -ob done$ *ransformational leaders foc#s on the big pict#re, needing to be
s#rro#nded by people who take care of the details$ *he leader is always looking for ideas that
move the organi0ation to reach the company’s vision$
:nvironmental leadership ) *he environmental leader is the one who n#rt#res gro#p
or organi0ational environment to affect the emotional and psychological perception of an

individ#al’s place in that gro#p or organi0ation$ 'n #nderstanding and application of
gro#p psychology and dynamics is essential for this style to be effective$ *he leader #ses
organi0ational c#lt#re to inspire individ#als and develop leaders at all levels$ *his leadership
style relies on creating an ed#cation atmosphere where gro#ps interactively learn the
f#ndamental psychology of gro#p dynamics and c#lt#re from each other$ *he leader #ses this
psychology, and complementary lang#age, to infl#ence direction thro#gh the members of the
