CH&S Netways Did I really just do that? D uring the past few years this column has been focused on how the internet and electronic resources can help or improve our day to day functioning as safety professionals. For those of you who are regular readers, you know that this column has been under going somewhat of a change – but it is still there to help you focus on some of the daily challenges that we as safety, environmental and health professionals have to meet. So, with that in mind – what is the basic challenge that is faced daily? The simple answer is risk awareness. Think about the safety pyramid – what is the base of the pyramid – the unsafe act. We as professionals know that a person can get a way with the same unsafe act 10, 50 and even 100 times before it results in a near miss, injury or some other catastrophic consequence. But, how many times to does a person do that during a single day? Do you perform these same unsafe acts? Think for a moment – do you leave the file draw open and walk away? Leave a box in a traffic area? Reach into something that you can’t really see where your hand is going? Use the most expedient tool not the proper tool? Fail to use eye protection when working on equipment? Flip a light switch with wet hands? Drive while tired, sick or otherwise impaired? The list could go on and on. As people, we tend to want to get the job done and get it done now. We don’t think about the consequences of our actions or even fun- damentally about what it is we are doing at the time. How many times have you arrived at home after work and really don’t know exactly how you got there? People tend to put some tasks on automatic pilot and this can be a significant safety issue. So, how do we address this situation? First, we as safety, environmental and health profes- sionals need to set an example. Even though we ourselves may be guilty of some of these actions – we need to point out to others when we observe them and ask that they do the same for us. We need to understand that everyone needs a reminder from time to time as the action may be the result of an old habit that needs to be broken – for example putting on your seat belt, your safety glasses or different personal protec- tive equipment. We need to be reminded to check our safety equipment – when was the last time you got a new hard hat, or new gloves? As people we like to get into our comfort zones and when we are comfortable we tend to take short cuts. We need to increase our awareness and that awareness is not in our comfort zone. So, look around your office and look at it as though you were an auditor or a new professional – what would you see and are you really aware? 1871-5532/$32.00 ß Division of Chemical Health and Safety of the American Chemical Society 27 doi:10.1016/j.jchas.2006.11.010 Elsevier Inc.
