A–P Types numbers.Q(1/x) Calculates a reciprocal.S(√x) Calculates a square root.D(x2) Squares a number.F(%) Calculates a percentage.G(.) Inserts a decimal point.H(+), J(-) Adds, subtracts, multipliesK(x), L(÷) or divides numbers.W(+/-) Changes the number on the

screen to a negative or positivenumber.

X(M+) Adds the number on the screen tothe number stored in memory.

C(M–) Subtracts the number on thescreen from the number storedin memory.

V(MR) Recalls the number stored inmemory.

Your BFQ-450 is powered by two CR2032,3-volt batteries. Follow these instructionsto install or replace them.

Warning!! If the batteries wear out com-pletely, or if you take more than approxi-mately one minute while changing the bat-teries, any user-entered information will beerased. You should always keep writtencopies of your important information.1. Turn the unit over.

2. Lift the battery cover on the backof your BFQ-450 by pushing it inthe direction of the arrow.

3. Install the batteries positive sidefacing up.

4. Replace the battery cover.

The flashing arrows on the rightof the screen show which arrowkeys you can press to movearound menus or view more text.

➤ Selecting a Message LanguageWhen you turn this product on forthe first time you must choose the

message language.

Press A for French and B forEnglish.

The message language is the lan-guage of the prompts, help and othermessages. You can change the mes-sage language after your initial selec-tion. To do so, do the following:1. Press MENU.

2. Press ENTRER to selectSettings.

3. Press to highlight MessageLanguage and press ENTRER.

➤ Selecting an Entry LanguageThe entry language is the languagein which you enter words at theWord Entry screen. This determineswhich dictionary you will use –French or English.

To change the Entry Language,press LANG at the Word Entryscreen.

The clock lets you set a Home Timeand view local times around theworld. You must set the Home Timebefore viewing World Times asWorld Times are based on HomeTime.

Viewing a Demonstrationor Tutorial

When using this dictionary, you canadjust the screen contrast, the shutofftime, and the type size. The shutofftime is how long your BFQ-450 stayson if you forget to turn it off.

1. Press MENU.

2. Press ENTRER to selectSettings.

3. Press or to highlightContrast, Shutoff, or Type Size.

4. Press ENTRER to select the oneyou want.

5. Press or to highlight anew setting and press ENTRERto select it.Press ARR to leave the settingunchanged.

6. Press EFFAC to return to theWord Entry screen.

You can view a tutorial or a demon-stration of this dictionary at anytime.

If you are uncertain of how to spella word, type a question mark (?) inplace of each unknown letter. Tofind prefixes, suffixes, and otherparts of words, type an asterisk (❇ )in a word. Each asterisk stands fora series of letters. Note: If you typean asterisk at the beginning of aword, it may take a little while to findthe matching words.1. Press DICT.

2. Type a word with ?s and ❇ s. Forexample, type bib?io❇ .To type an asterisk, hold downMAJ and press ?.

3. Press ENTRER.You see the list of matchingwords.

4. Press or to move thehighlight to the word you wantand press ENTRER to view itstranslation.

5. Press EFFAC when done.

Another way to look up words is byhighlighting them in dictionaryentries or word lists. You can thenfind the translation of the highlightedword or add it to My Word List.

Conjugations show inflections, orchanges in a word’s gender, tense,etc. This dictionary includes exten-sive inflections of nouns, verbs,modifiers, and other words. Followthis example.1. Press CONJ.

Press LANG if necessary toselect French.

2. Type the word to conjugate. 3. Press CONJ to view the inflec-

tions.If needed, use or to high-light the part of speech or transla-tion you want and pressENTRER.

4. Press ESPACE or to scroll.5. Press CONJ repeatedly to view

In Guess the Word, you must typethe missing letters in the mysteryword. To read the translation of themystery word, press if needed.Press or , if needed, to select amissing letter, and then type the let-ter that you think belongs there.Continue typing letters until theword is complete or no more triesare left.

➤ Word Auction

In Word Auction, you try to bid on allthe letters of a mystery word, beforeyour cash runs out. The amount of

each bid depends on the frequencyof the letter. All bids will cost youwhether correct or incorrect. If youguess the word by revealing all ofthe letters, your remaining cash isadded to the next round.

➤ Word Blaster

In Word Blaster, you can try toguess the mystery word before allits letters appear. As soon as youknow the word, press ENTRER.Then type your guess, and pressENTRER. If you’re wrong, WordBlaster asks you for another word.The speed at which the lettersappear is set by the skill level.

You can use a password to keep theinformation in the databank private. Thepassword is requested when the unit isturned on and the databank isaccessed.

Password Warnings

Warning! After you set the pass-word, you must enter the passwordto access the databank for the firsttime during a session. Alwaysrecord your password and keep it ina separate place.

If you forget the password, youmust reset the unit to access thedatabank.

Warning! Resetting the unit erasesall user-entered information. Alwayskeep written copies of your data.

If you have a reset button, use theend of a straightened paper clip togently press the reset button.

➤ To Erase All the Phone ListEntriesWarning! This procedure perma-nently erases all the names andnumbers in your phone list.
