TheParametric Snakeplot isathree-variable plot that letsyou

see relationshipsyou cant easilysee usingother methods. Twovariablesare plotted asthe x andy variablesin a scatterplot. Then,

their data points areconnected in increas-ingorder of the thirdvariable.

The parametric snakeplot is especially usefulfor lookingat therelationshipsbetweentwo variablesover

time. Itsalso a goodway to examinecorrelationsamongthree variables.

Visually discover which variables are important toyour analysis

Quickly view variablecorrelationswith theFractal Foamplot.Get even more insightinto your data by

usingthe shape andorientation of eachbubble to representthe univariate statis-tics for each variable.

Thisunique plot isnot available in anyother analysisorvisualization package.

Easily find and present complex setsof relationships

Simultaneously showrelationshipsamongfour variablesin yourdata with the Quad-wiseplot. Thisis

just one example ofhow SPSS Diamondmakesi t easy to seeinterrelationshipsamongvariables

    that you mayotherwise miss.

A quad-wise plot consistsof two scatterplots side-by-side.The line connectingthe pointsrepresentsthe same case in

both plots. Thisplot letsyou easily see nonlinearity and three-way interaction effectsin your data.

Get to the heart of your analysis quickly

    Quickly see complicat-ed relationshipsin

your data and getgreater insight byusingtheParallelCoordinates plot.

With thispowerfultool, you can assesscorrelationsand inter-actions in your data. Each variable isplot-

ted on a vertical axiswith linesconnectingthe pointscase-by-caseand color-by-color.

Get in-depth information on any two variables

    Take advantage of the

Pairwisewindowto getmore in-depth informationthan youll find in mostscatterplots. The Pairwisewindow letsyou easily view

histogramsand cumulativehistograms, scatterplotsandbivariate statistics, givingyou everythingyou need at

your fingertips. Overlay bestfit l ineson colored subsetsof the data for even moreflexible exploratory dataanalysis.

Interactively explore potential relationshipsin your data by

    rotating 3-D plots

    Interact with your

data by rotatingaTriplewiseplot(3-Dscatterplot) in anydirection to investi-gate relationships

amongvariables. To get even moreinformation, you canuse color to depict a

fourth variable. Youcant get this kind ofdepth in a standard3-D scatterplot.

Notice how most of the groups of colored lines(each color represents a certain time period) runslightly downhill from left to right, except for theyellow lines. The yellow lines represent the timeperiod showing the correlation between low auto-mobile sales and high interest rates.

Figure A: This parametric snake plot reveals a

    non-linear relationship between unemployment

and economy (economy is a composite index of

leading economic indicators). This suggests thatsome type of nonlinear model should be fit to thetwo variables.

Figure B: Now, when you successively link the

points in order of year, you can see a rel ation-

ship between unemployment and economy with

respect to time. This clearly shows different

time periods where certain shocks to the econ-omy occurred and the relationships between

    economy and unemployment changed.

In this triplewise plot, you can see relationships

among automobile sales, rate of unemployment and

the prime interest rate. We colored subsets of thedata by year to give you even more information.

This plot reveals that high-magnitude earth-

quakes (highlighted in red) occurred at the samelongitude and latitude and on three particular

days.* This is just one exam ple of how the

Parallel Coordinates window can clearly reveal

complicated sets of relationships, enabling you

to get to the heart of your analysis quickly.

*Dataand analysis provided courtesy of M athew Schall,Ph.D., as it appeared in Perspective, a publication ofUCLAs Office of Academic Computing

In this Pairwise window, we havesegmented the data by year into five

colored subsets. You can ea sily see how

the prime rate and unemployment were

    negatively correlated during the years

represented by the blue and red lines.

This suggests that other factors were

affecting these relationships and needfurther e xploration.

Our version of this popular exploratory

data analysis plot conveys much more

    information than the typical scatterplot

matrix. It also gives you the flexibility to

overlay best-fit lines and a djust the

    goodness-of-fit threshold.

In the fractal foam plot, the focus variable isplotted as the large bubble in the center, andcorrelated variables are mapped around it. Inthis example, weve chosen the closing price ofIBM stock as our focus variable. You can easilysee which other stocks are m ost closelycorrelated to IBM. This is extreme ly valuable forfinancial analysts who evaluate the mix ofstocks in a portfolio.
