To explain this tutorial I will take an example of staircase and spiral staircase which could be made easy by using the following steps

Create a stair step with dimension 1500 mm x 300 mm and height of 150 mm

While selecting the object, go to copy and arrange tool and select copy along a line, If you are not selecting the object then you will not see this option.

Click on the arrow to see more options for distance and apply 0.3 for x and 0.15 for z Quantity 20 and apply

Now you have made this in very easy way.

You can create a room and duplicate story Then you can use cut out to make staircase opening in DIALux evo For more details check DIALux evo Tu-torial 5 in my weblog

Now let’s make more complex stair like spiral staircase

Create a room with 10 meter height (ideally two room or 3 with cut out in this ceiling ) To make it simple for this tutorial make one room with height of 10 meter Create a stair step with dimension 1500 mm x 300 mm and height of 150 mm

Draw a circle reference line with radius of 1 meter

Select the stair step and go to copy and Arrange tool click on copy along existing reference line. if you see option is not active change the view from room to story view

Click on the circle you made and then put quantity 60, then click on follow curve shape, finally apply. Some time you have to change the rotation offset to different angle to get it right.

Now you made the spiral stair steps but all are in one level.

Select one of the steps by clicking twice First click will select all the steps Second click will select individual one

Go to object and make the Z position 9 m

Use Esc key to escape individual selection to select all elements.

While selecting the group of objects go to copy and arrange tool and click on distribute evenly (Z)

Now you should be having similar view to what is shown here, however the top step is weird looking so select it and bring it down

This step is very critical you should bring down to its normal position between the steps. Just bring it down vertically to be between steps.

If you find the previous step is not easy then try the alternative way Select the upper step and the lower step where you find a gap between steps Zoom and rotate to find the right one.

While selecting both steps go to copy and arrange tool and click on Align bottom(Z)

Use Esc to deactivate individual selection then select to grope of elements After that go to copy and arrange tool and repeat click on distribute evenly (Z) Now you have the steps aligned perfectly. By the way you can delete the first stair step that you made it to create this spiral stair. Enjoy planning the lighting!

Using this powerful tool is good for any objects and furniture to make modeling very easy You could also use this for lighting arrangements. In the next example I will use a wallwasher to wash a curved wall



Import an AutoCAD drawing with a curved wall after you make in AutoCAD an offset wall with one meter (ideal for washing a wall with 3 meter height)

After creating the room insert a wallwasher For this tutorial I used ERCO 84014 After inserting the luminaire, make sure that the show light distribution curves is active form the display options in the upper right corner.

Draw a curving reference line following the offset line of the imported drawing.

Go to copy and arrange tool and select the wallwasher then click on copy along exist-ing reference line. And move the mouse cursor to the curved line you made if you see option is not active change the view from room to story view after that put the quantity so that you have a distance close to 1 meter, in this example it is 6 with 0.923 meter spacing. Select Follow curve shape. then you have to select the right angle for here it is 90o



If you don’t not the right rotation then you have to use the trial and error method till you get it right(try different angles until you have the light side to the wall) Then delete the first luminaire

To make calculation faster go to Light scenes tool and click on Combine luminaire groups with the same dimming values, so you have one instead of 6 in this example.

Now you should have evenly distributed lighting on the curved wall.

You can also use this for any light ar-rangement like grazing and light scalloping effect.
