PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 383 - 5 Oct 2002 Intensive self-management education and monitoring can significantly improve outcomes for patients with diabetes mellitus who are undergoing dialysis, say US-based researchers. Their 12-month analysis of 83 such patients randomised to an education intervention (n = 45) or to usual care showed that glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels decreased significantly in the intervention group and remained unchanged in the control group at study endpoint. In addition, the intervention group demonstrated ‘marked improvement’ from baseline in self-management behaviours, compared with controls, note the researchers.
