diabetes education intervention successful in dialysis patients

■ Intensive self-management education andmonitoring can significantly improve outcomes forpatients with diabetes mellitus who are undergoingdialysis, say US-based researchers. Their 12-monthanalysis of 83 such patients randomised to aneducation intervention (n = 45) or to usual careshowed that glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levelsdecreased significantly in the intervention group andremained unchanged in the control group at studyendpoint. In addition, the intervention groupdemonstrated ‘marked improvement’ from baseline inself-management behaviours, compared with controls,note the researchers. Furthermore, disease-relatedquality of life scores improved significantly frombaseline in the intervention, compared with thecontrol, group.McMurray SD, et al.
