DEVOTIONDivorce is a very painful issue that has been made

worse by some biblical interpretations of divorce. The Scriptures dont give a universal teaching

against divorce. Certainly the Bible and Jesus

wanted to see people stay together in marriages, but

there were cases when divorce was justified.

When Jesus made comments about divorce in

Matthew he was speaking to menmen who had all

of the power in a relationship.

As you read these Scriptures about divorce, be open

to the Spirit of God. Be aware of the following

tension: God wants marriages to succeed, but God

    gave permission for divorce.

    Monday, June 11Read Genesis 2:18-25

The last part of this passage presents the ideal of

marriage. A man and a woman leave their ownfamilies and become one flesh. They form a union.

When this passage was written, polygamy was

commonand still takes place in our world today.

When Jesus interpreted this passage in Matthew, he

saw the passage as teaching the ideal of life-time,

    monogamous marriage.

One of the purposes of the church is to present thisideal of marriage. The church can always do a betterjob of helping couples do a better job of navigating

the tricky waters of marriage. When was the last

time you heard a sermon or attended a class that

was meant to help couples grow in their marriage?

All of us have role models for marriage. Who do you

look to as being a role model for two becoming one?

Perhaps you could contact them and ask the couple

some of their secrets for a successful marriage. As

you pray today, give thanks to God for this marriage.

Ask for continual blessings on their relationship.
