2 3 4that God gave to Abram in the 12th chapterof Genesis. God promised that a long lineof people would come after Abraham.
The story of the Old Testament is a story ofthe relationship between God and thepeople of God who became the nation of
Israel.
We can learn a lot about ourselves through
the story of Abraham. Abraham was deeplyblessed because of his faith. Theseblessings were spiritual. Abraham hadmany struggles, and God never stopped
blessing Abraham.
Faith gave Abraham the confidence to followGod. What do you center your life around?
How deep is your own faith in God? Whatdeeply moves you about God? As you pray
today, reflect with God on these questions.

Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9We memorized verses 4 and 5 last month. These words were given to the Israelites as
they prepared to cross over the JordanRiver into the Promised Land. These wordswould carry them forth. They were like the
mission statement for the people. Theywere to teach the words to their children, they were to recite them and bind them to
the doorposts on their home.
If you had a short statement about God andyour relationship with God what would it
be? What words about God would defineyour own beliefs and thoughts. Could youmake them short and memorize them sothat you would carry them with you always?
Take some time today to develop this shortstatement. Ask God for help. This
statement could define who you are as aperson of faith. How exciting!

Read 1 Samuel 8:1-22This story shares the peoples desire for a
king. Samuel told the people that if theyhad a king that the king would require quitea lot from them. Samuel and God throughSamuel tried to convince the people that
they didnt need a king. The peoplewouldnt listen.
Look at what God said to Samuel in verse
22:Listen to their voice and set a king over
them.
God was willing to do something that Goddidnt want to do. God granted the people a
king even though God knew that this wasntin the peoples best interest.
This story says a lot about humans and a lotabout God. We are so like the Israelites inthat we want protection even though our
ultimate source of comfort is God. Thisstory also shares that God doesnt controleverything that goes on in our lives. God is
willing to do something that isnt in ourinterest if we really pray for it.
Pray over these ideas today.
Thursday, March 1
Read 2 Kings 25:1-7This is the story of the siege of Jerusalemthat started in 587 and lasted for 18months. Its a terrible story of thedestruction of Judah and the kings of Judah.
King Zedekiah was captured after heescaped the siege of Jerusalem. After he
was captured he saw his sons killed, then
he had his eyes gouged out and then wasdeported to Babylon.
Later we read that the Temple was
destroyed and some of the valuable parts ofit were carried away to Babylon.
This story was the culmination of manyevents. The people had turned away fromGod; the kings of Judah had acted evil. Just
before this story Zedekiah was described ashaving done evil in the sight of the Lord.
As you pray today, pray that such terrible
events wont happen in our day. Pray thatpeople will follow God with a passionatelove; pray that we can create the Kingdomthat knows peace.

Read Micah 6:6-8Along with Amos, Isaiah, and Hosea Micahwas one of Israels four great eight-centuryprophets. In this passage he describedwhat God wanted from people. Verse eightspeaks for itself and is worth memorizing:
He has told you, O mortal, what is good;and what does the Lord require of you but
to do justice, and to love kindness, and towalk humbly with your God.
Spend some time meditating and prayingover this verse. This verse shares Godsvision for the world.
Saturday, March 3
Read Hosea 11:1-4Last Sunday Pastor Paul shared that thestory of the Old Testament is a relationship
between God and the people who becamethe nation of Israel. This passage shares
the pathos that God experienced when thepeople wouldnt follow God.

As a parent God always loved the people.Even when people turned away God wouldlove the people. God grieved when the
people wouldnt follow God.
This image of God as a parent is an
important one in the Old Testament. Godwas waiting and anxious for the people tofollow.
Today as you pray, give thanks to God thatGod still treats us this way. God deeplywants us to follow God. When we turn to
other things God is deeply grieved. We arefortunate that we have a God who loves usthis much!
