The first of the new luxury condominiums is the Brickell House in the Brickell area of Miami, just south of downtown and overlooking Biscayne Bay.

In late 2014 Brickell House received its temporary certificate of occupancy, thereby approving completion of the project. Newgard Developments amenity-laden, towering palazzo of luxury is a 46-story building with 374 units, a robotic parking garage, pools on the amenity deck and the

roof, a three-story lobby, a screening room, a spa and fitness center and several resident lounges.

Architects for the project were Sieger Suarez of Miami while interior design for the building and units was completed by Yabu Pushelberg, Toronto, Ontario. Architectural woodwork was fabricated and installed by Hollywood Woodwork, an AWI member firm located in Hollywood, Florida.

The interiors were an extremely important part of the building project. We wanted to elevate the look and feel of the interiors to a whole to a level of class and sophistication that would set the project apart from others in the market, explains a representative from the development company.

According to ChristieKehl, project manager at Hollywood Woodwork, the custom woodwork elements for Brickell House covered all public spaces, including: the metal art at the rental center; lobby and rental center wall paneling and desks; owners lounge island wall unit; upholstered wall panels in the theater; elevator lobbies; club room floor-to-ceiling screens; kitchen area including island, exterior transoms and pool fencing; plus wall and ceiling paneling and stair surround at the corporate office.

Plain sliced, random matched American Black Walnut was used on the wall panels in the lobby and rental center, on desks and elevator lobbies. A finishing process that included a low VOC conversion varnish was used to alter the natural Walnut in order to give the effect of Brazilian Rosewood.

Slip matched, quarteredAmerican Black Walnut veneer utilizing the same finishing process that was used at the club lounge kitchen; painted wood and quartered Walnut at club lounge screens; plain sliced, random matched Limba Frake veneer panels and doors at corporate offices; and plain sliced Angelique at the pool fence and exterior transoms.

6SHFLDO6SDFHVThere is a lot of drama and

natural light pouring into theproperty, adds Storey. There isa bold clarity that surrounds it and makes a strong architecturalstatement within it. The bestexample of this is the lobby. We made a very strong box that you walk into, and within thatbox there is a very dramatic and solid organic form.

For Hollywood Woodwork, special spaces were the Club Lounge and Owners Lounge where free standing curved islands sport a unique feature of layered wood and joinery. The challenge was to layer solid wood blocks to form the base and sculpt the unit by hand, using traditional methods.

  • GHVLJQTPMVUJPOT I VXPPHU

The two screens in the Club Lounge posed a particular challenge, explains Kehl. How do you support the weight, and assemble and install in the field 15-foot-high by 15-foot-wide screens? Our solution was to develop a steel structure incorporated into the design that could be concealed within the horizontal box beams. Since the design intent was to

have a random look, we then engineered vertical steel supports into the design so they would not be noticeable. We then designed the layout of the whole assemble to be knocked down into manageable sections to allow us to do most of the assembly in the shop and minimize installation time.

The beautiful patterned wood, double high screens were made for the amenities areas, recalls Storey. Intermixed in the screen are pops of fuchsias and purples. The combination of those colors with the wood makes a unique and definitive statement. Also the curved wood island units in the lounges are very noteworthy. The form required 3D modeling and intricate construction in layers of solid Walnut.

    7HFKQLFDO$VVLVWDQFHThe woodworking firm

provided assistance in acquiring the desired metal finish for the tops in the lobby desks and screen. Site issues required working closely with the design team to precisely identify sizes of wall panels in the lobby, notes Kehl.

We helped with the budget objectives by working closely with the team on alternatives in engineering of designs. We provided a timeline to the general contractor at the beginning of the project to communicate lead times of various elements and required information needed to proceed. During the course of the project, our team coordinated with other trades as well as the general contractor to insure that areas were ready to receive our product.

Genbrook provided wallpaneling, display cases and ceiling panels of Cherry; wall paneling, slotted paneling and trim of Beech; slotted wall paneling of White Birch; Black Walnut bench seating; Red Oak door frames, trims and storefront frames; Maple wall paneling and display case in the university store, and conference room paneling; Birdseye Maple veneer for the conference room doors; and high pressure decorative laminate cabinetry and countertops with Red Oak edging.

The bold design of the main entrance features 16 splayed timber struts and a diagonally framed cantilevered roof, creating a dramatic gesture of welcome and celebrating SUNY-ESFs heritage as a forestry school, points out Watts. The use of wood helps fulfill one of the projects key objectives: to create hands-on teaching and research tools for students.

Approximately half for the slotted panels are Beech on half-inch MDF. MDF was chosen because once the slots were cut into the panel, the MDF was exposed.

The finishes also required a great deal of time, continues Browning. Because wood was a very prominent part of the look, it needed to look its best for a very long time. The half-inch slotted Birch veneered MDF panels were to receive a whitewash stain so that the grain was visible, yet have a white finish. The finishes used were to be GreenGuard certified at a minimum. After discussing it with ML Campbell, we ended up using a water-based water white varnish so the panels would not fade in the bright light of the concourse.

The use of a wide variety of wood species enriches the buildings aesthetic experience. Exposed glue-laminated timbers and two-inch wood decking typify public spaces. Diagonal timbered coffers, round columns and tapered wood struts are designed to resemble a grove of trees within the building. The abundant wood and strong diagonals create warm tones and visual movement in this dynamic campus center.

was by far the most difficult and unique, recalls Browning. The architectural drawings called for four different rout patterns. However, it was shown that all the panels were the same size. In reality there were 113 different sizes and shaped panels, many of which had multiples. That meant every different panel size and shape had to be programmed to run on our router as a separate program.

Inside and out, the design showcases the beauty of sustainably harvested wood, notes Watts. Additional intricate woodworking details included extensive wood veneer paneling backed by acoustical fabric, custom built concourse benches and museum-quality display cases to house the wildlife collection.

Boothroyd favors the routed panels featured throughout the concourse and conference center. Unique and striking in appearance, each panel has numerous routed slots, which vary from panel to panel. Im certain that it required an extensive amount of planning and layout. The craftsmanship is excellent and the outcome is fabulous.
