_design is an exercise in creative problem-solving, which is the key that will unlock solutions to human concerns of our present and future

_architecture is a form of design that addresses the largest physical undertakings of human effort; therefore, it holds a critical place in the move- ment to sustain a livable future for society _architecture is both collaborative & integrative in its approach; it seeks to make sense of a wide range of concerns and considerations, and does so in the form of cooperative effort

_architecture is a temporal field of study; therefore, as times change, so does architecture, and the architect’s training includes the capacity to respond to the evolving conditions of the natural, built, and human environment

approach

_while complex in its organization, the design solution seeks simplicity in its final form; the beauty of a good design is born out of a logical cohesion among its many elements and of strong relationships within the design itself

_designs are not only for the designer, they are meant to be understood by those for whom they serve; therefore, appropriate design solutions are, in their final form, straightforward and intuitive

_to best achieve an intuitive approachability for the users of the design, a good design ought to be fundamentally honest and transparent, rather than clouded and ambiguous in its intentions

process

_an architectural solution begins with an initial assessment of site, program, and conditions of context

_the analysis of pre-existing conditions and the nature of the desired design solution lend them- selves to a wide range of preliminary design ideas

_preliminary design ideas are filtered and refined to reduce to a single, overriding design concept

_schematic development is a kinetic and transformative evolution of the design concept; design decisions support the concept or challenges its premises

_the design concept is backed by a number of secondary design goals, which reinforce the dominant idea, but offer underlying character and richness to the design solution

_the design solution is represented using diverse methods of production; different media stimulate different modes of thinking

As the field of creative design adapts to the evolving needs of society, designers seek to accommodate those needs and to provide a comfortable& pleasant standard of living for all people. There exists a population amongthese people whose mobility is restricted as a result of a physical disability. We must consider the conditions and needs of those who are physically dis-abled and respond through our actions with design.

The American Institute of Architecture Students at the University of Maryland will host a Universal Design Awareness Event, to raise student awareness about the lives of people who are physically disabled and consequently wheelchair-bound. Guest speakersCindy Buddington, Connie Caldwell, and John Salmen will present at 11 AM; they will discuss the experiences of living with a wheelchairand touch on the sensibilities of universal design and accessibility. The presentation will be followed by a light luncheon and an interactivewheelchair activity, limited to 20 students.

but action starts with awareness.
