May 2017 DESIGN JOBURG 2017 LEAVES AN IMPRESSION Thousands flocked to the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg this weekend for Media 10’s inaugural Design Joburg, featuring Rooms on View. The show’s Collaborative Roomset features were hailed a success by exhibitors and visitors alike. The concept saw the show pairing leading local interior designers and architects with an array of prominent brands to create imaginative room sets. At the helm of these innovative features were Tristan du Plessis (Studio A), Joe van Rooyen (JVR Architects), GASS Architecture Studios, Adri van Zyl (Atelier), Studium Design Office, Nthabi Taukobong (Ditau Interiors), Kimmy & Bear, Yaniv Chen (Master Studio), Kelly Adami (Copperleaf Studio), David Muirhead and Thabisa Mjo (Mash.T Design Studio). This unique approach offered a platform for several brands to share the same stage and created immersive exhibits that provided visitors with real take-home inspiration. “The biggest challenge for us was get- ting people to work together. The bene- fit of brands working with a designer or architect is that so much more will come out of the aesthetic of their products. This is a much better way of allowing the public to engage with your brand than just displaying every product that you have and replicating your showroom ex- perience,” says Andrea Kleinloog, Creative Director of Design Joburg. The repl icat ion of convent ional showrooms was replaced by exhib i tors present ing their wares in seduct ive room sets a l l a round the show that were enthus iast ica l ly received by a wel l -heeled, des ign lov ing audience. Local inter ior des igner and owner of the long-standing Rooms on V iew exhib i t ion, Sumar i Kr ige was thr i l led with the partnersh ip fo l lowing a 6 year h iatus. Instagram was abuzz with one stand in part icu lar, that of Weylandts Spaces. Layer ing raw textures l ike stone, wood, meta l and l inen with r ich and ref ined f in ishes, thei r 90 square meter space, inc luding a k i tchen, lounge and bedroom, drew v is i tors in with atmospher ic and moody scenes. One of the show highl ights was without doubt the Dar l ings exhib i t where together the country 's most loved local des igners were g iven the opportunity to sh ine a l ight on their very latest des igns. Dar l ings saw an exc i t ing new l ine up of furn i ture, l ight ing, ceramics and text i les being shown off a longside an ethereal paper insta l lat ion by art is t E lonah O'Nei l . Some of the favour i tes , among others , were Haldane Mart in 's new plywood Sim-Ply chairs and the Afr ican inspired, fe l t -backed Umqhele chair by col laborators Afr igarde and Umongo. Associate sponsors P ierre Jourdan made sure that the dr inks never ran dry at the leafy p i ts top A Walk in the Park , where guests gathered every day to meet, greet , eat and s ip on wine and bubbles under a spectacular E lonah O'Nei l paper insta l lat ion. Guests a lso got to know some of our emerging des igners a l i t t le better. Deta i l ' 24 brought thei r brand of understated glamour to the fore with a range of contemporary furn i ture in s ignature jewel tones, whi le increas ingly popular inter ior des igner Donald Nxumalo s lowed the tempo with a soft and subdued lounge sett ing in shades of pa le p ink.
