Eco - FABBy simply changing insulation thickness, thermal mass, shading, glazing, and cladding this modular 1-bedroom unit is able to passively adapt to the various climate types found in the United States while maintaining a unique and modern appearance.

DiAMoND vAllEY lAkE cENtERThis research project was grant funded by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern CA and was completed by a team of Cal Poly graduate architecture students. Project focused on site master planning, architectural design, passive systems integration, and off-grid feasibility.

DIAMOND VALLEY LAKE FACULTY HOUSING & RETREAT CENTER
DiAMoND vAllEY lAkE cENtER WAtERWith its lake side situation, the Faculty Housing and Retreat Center has the unique opportunity to be independent from the municipal water grid. The site is designed to purify and polish usable water as well as treat and reuse its own wastewater through the implementation of a living machine.

Stage 1 treatment for potable water on the site is micro filtration followed by chlo-rine disinfection. This water is used for laundry, site landscaping (as it is within the lake watershed), and as a back-up for toilet flushing.
After micro filtration in stage 1, some water is processed through activated carbon filters and an ion exchanger to enhance taste. Then it undergoes reverse os-mosis and UV treatment. This water is used for sinks, showers, and evaporative cooling (for air quality purposes).
All wastewater will receive primary treatment by settlement tanks and secondary treatment by a Living Machine System. This treated wastewater will then go through a screen filter, a cartridge filter, UV treatment, and finally chlorination. This will treat the wastewater to California Title-22 disinfected tertiary standards.

ECO-FAB
Eco-FAB WAtER cYclEThe water system proposed in the Eco-Fab dwelling unit is designed as a low cost solution to bringing water efficiency and re-use into the affordable housing market.
Rain water collection from the roof through the use of a simple gutter provides the greywater
system with a supplemental water source.
Eco-Fab Kitchen/Bathroom Module
Water collected from the shower, the bathroom sink, the washing machine, and the rainwater
collection system is stored in a holding tank under the home until it is needed.
Greywater from the storage tank is periodically circulated and filtered to maintain its quality. The
greywater is reused in the house for toilet flushing and outside for landscape irrigation.
Black water produced by the toilet, kitchen sink, and dishwasher is fed to the sewer for treatment.

ECO-FAB
Eco-FAB PAssivE REsPoNsEWith the right amount of thermal mass, glazing, shading, natural ventila-tion, and insulation Eco-Fab can become a predominately passive dwell-ing anywhere in the nation.
The thermal envelope is made of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) to allow for the most flexibility in insulation thickness while eliminating the large amounts of thermal bridging found in wood framing.
To minimize weight during transportation, Eco-Fab utilizes steel water tanks behind glazing for a trombe wall effect and thermal mass.
The length of the south roof overhang in the Eco-Fab models is changed to provide necessary shading depending on the climate and latitude.
Colder climate models are designed with a higher percentage of glazing on the south elevation to increase solar gain in the winter. Windows are also placed to allow cross-ventilation no matter the orientation or wind direction.

Dvl cENtER PAssivE REsPoNsELocation: Riverside County, CA. This conference center utilizes a second-ary roof structure as solar control to either allow sun during the winter or shade the building during the summer. Winter heating is accomplished through direct solar gain and evaporative cooling is used in the summer.

FAcultY cABiNs PAssivE REsPoNsELike the conference center, the individual dwelling units on the site use a secondary roof structure to control solar gain. Direct natural ventilation from winds over the lake, evaporative cooling, and ceiling fans keep oc-cupants cool during the long summer season.

DiAMoND vAllEY lAkE MAstER PlANWith a truly unique location this master plan draws site lines from the strong axis of the lake’s dam, views, and prevailing winds. Every building on the site has access to amazing view corridors while still maintaining excellent orientation for solar control and cross ventilation.
