The direct lineage of the Pate/Pait family of Bladen County NC can be traced only back to Thoroughgood Pate (about 1635 ) It is my belief that he is somehow related to the Pate's of the Jamestowne settlement of VA., and Thomas Pate of Yorktowne, VA. Thoroughgood Pate and wife Sarah Chevin were once residents of Surry County, Virginia, and that Thoroughgood left that area with his brother for North Carolina. His departure may have been an excape from prosecution or debtor's prison, if this record refers to the same Thoroughgood Pate; "Mr. Thomas Ligon sued by Howell Pryse at last court, for the escape of one Thurgood Pate, a prisoner in his custody. "(Charles City County Court Orders, Vol II, 1658­1661, p. 141, abstracted by Beverly Fleet and passed on to us by wspate@earthlink.net) wspate@earthlink.net The Pate family of England is known: Edward Pate of Kettleby, son of Edward Pate, was born around 1515. Edward was married but his wife's name is not known, but they had a son, Henry Pate.

Henry Pate born around 1545, and had a son, John Pate.

Sir John Pate of Sisonby, Co. Leicester, son of Henry Pate, born Abt. 1580 and was created a Baronet on October 28, 1643. Sir John was married twice, first to Elizabeth Skipwith, daughter of Sir William Skipwith, and secondly to Lettice Dilks, edest daughter of Sir Thomas Dilks of Marlock Castle in Co. Warwick. Sir John had two sons who both died before he did so the baronetcy become extinct upon his death. His daughters two by his first marriage and one by his second.

John Pate of Brin, the younger son of Edward Pate of Eye Kettleby, was born Abt 1522 in Leicestershire, England and married Ellina Saltmarsh, daughter of thomas Saltmarsh of Epping, and they had two sons;

Thomas Pate, who married Marian Nevill and they had an only son, Edmund Pate of whom we have no further report.

Edward Pate of Brin, Later Breden, son of John and Ellian Pate, was born abt 1550 and married Anna Blount, daughter of William Blount of Osbaston. Arms were established for the family in 1619 blazoned as; Argent (silver) three Roman text r's, sable (black)

In 1681, a crest was made as follow; A Stag's head caboshed or (gold) between the attires a raven wings expanded sable. (black)

Henry Pate, son of Edward and Anna Blount Pate, was born in 1592. Henry arrived in Virginia in 1655 along with Katherine his wife and with him was Elizabeth Pate. This lady could be his sister or it could be Thomas Pate's wife Elizabeth. This Thomas was already in America. We have not been able to establish if Henry Pate had children. E/R

Thomas Pate, son of Edward and Anna Blount Pate. He was born in 1594 and died in 1644. He married Margaret and had two sons;

John Pate Thomas Pate

John Pate, born in 1616 and died in 1672. He arrived in Virginia at the port of Yorktowne in 1651 and in 1653 returned to england to persuade his wife to join him in Virginia, but she refused. So he came back to Va. by himself. (Va Colonal Records) At the death of Richard Pate, his uncle, in 1672, John inherited all of his uncle Richard's vast estates and wealth. When he died he had no heirs in this country, Thomas Pate, son of his brother Thomas Pate, was appointed his administrator.

Thomas Pate, son of Thomas and Margaret Pate, was born around 1618. It is not known when he arrived in America, but it must have been in the 1630's. He operated a ferry across the York River and build a home in Yorktown, Va.

Edward Pate, son of Edward and Anna Blount Pate, born in 1577 and died in 1655. He married Elizabeth Knifton and they had nine children;

John Pate, son of Edward and Elizabeth Pate, was born in 1630 and married elizabeth Sheepside. They had two sons;

Thomas Pate Edward Pate

Thomas Pate, son of John and Elizabeth Pate, was admitted Sizar at Magdalene College, July 4, 1676 and received his Bachelor of Arts in 1679. Edward Pate, son of John and Elizabeth Pate, was Matriculated Pensioner Easter in 1676 and Rector of Heather, Leicester in 1681.

Richard Pate, son of Edward and Anna Blount Pate, born in 1591, and died in 1657. Richard left England in 1636 for Virginia, traveling with a cousin, William Pate. We do not have any record of William.

This is the English Pate History. The Pate family of Bladen County likely came from one of the Yorktown Pate's. Documentation of the lineage to Bladen County has not been found, but it is believed by many that this is the most likely: Thoroughgood Pate had a son Charles Pate, who had a son James Pate, who had a son David Pate who came to Bladen County, NC.

Around the year 1887, William and Sarah moved to Georgia. The gooden family first moved to a community known as Red Bluff, Montgomery County, Georgia and William worked at a turpentine still as a cooper, making barrels. A few years later he moved his family to Liberty County near Old Warnell's Bridge to a community known as Jamestown. William and Sarah died in Jamestown and were buried at Warnell Cemetery in Liberty Caouty. They had five children;
