What if a secret garden could heal an unconsolable grief? A tender and zany dramatic comedy about the shattered destiny of an ordinary couple bound by an extraordinary love… Nowadays in the region surrounding Paris, Martin loses the woman he loves, Gabrielle, in a traffic accident.

Inconsolable, he sinks deeper and deeper into the denial of her brutal disappearance and forces himself to

keep her memory alive. Gabrielle had two passions: reading and gardening. Martin, who has never opened a

book in his life and who always thought of the garden as Gabrielle’s personal domain, begins to read and to

care for the garden in Gabrielle’s footsteps. In the process, he discovers a secret that Gabrielle had kept hidden

from him out of love. This secret will lead him to meet some extraordinary characters and will turn his life

upside down while helping him to overcome Gabrielle’s death in unexpected ways. Thanks to this secret,

Martin will find peace and even happiness as he lives a self-sufficient life cultivating his garden, like a modern

Robinson Crusoe in the middle of the city. Unfortunately, society has other plans. The earthly paradise that

Martin creates in Gabrielle’s garden disturbs the status quo and is a source of envy. The price that Martin will

pay for the jealousy of others is steep, but the garden is indestructible. Capable of overcoming anything,

Gabrielle’s garden will take on a new form through its rebirth.

A radiant dramatic comedy, this tender and sometimes absurdly comical variation on the themes of never-

ending love, unbearable grief, and passing along the love for reading and the delicate art of gardening elicits

the same zany sense of tragedy sometimes evoked in En attendant Bojangles by Olivier Bourdault.

A broken man’s odyssey of vengeance in a 19th century foreshadowing all of the impending upheavals.

Vendée 1856: the name “Joseph Roubaud” spreads throughout France like an echo of terror… Joseph Roubaud

was born disabled and is called “The Club Foot.” He is reminiscent of the slightly twisted heroes that a certain

Hugo and his way with words turned into touching characters such as “the man who laughs” or Quasimodo,

except that this Roubaud is a real bastard who deserves to die a hundred times over. He started by executing

three guys that he suspected of raping his daughter, Ophélie.

The little twelve-year-old was his only link to humanity and now her body has been found floating in a nearby

river. The villagers suspect that he is actually Ophélie’s murderer. All signs point to his guilt, but rather than

answer the police’s questions, Roubaud plunges headfirst into a bloody, desperate, and futile expedition. He is

accompanied by The Forge: a giant with a serene, expressionless face; “the fruit of metal and of the Earth”; a

rock-solid man; a sort of avant-garde robot who knows nothing of his origins, his childhood, or love…

This precarious, fierce, fantastic, and damned duo will write its own legend and reveal the lies and depravity of

those around them. Chabert, the village’s mayor, will be their first victim and the truths they expose will

completely destroy his family, for in this apocalyptic tale, speech is a weapon, words kill, and ideas can prove

deadly.

• Matmut Award 2017

• An atmosphere similar to the cruel and hypnotic ambiance in Jean Teulé’s Mangez-le si vous voulez

• Joseph Roubaud, a man broken by the fatality of his era and his condition who decides to make others pay for

his misfortune, is a highly modern anti-hero who inspires a growing desire for rebellion in each and every one

of us

• A text that explores the binary conflicts that mankind constantly confronts: city vs. countryside, children vs.

parents, progress vs. superstition, the new world vs. the old one, memory vs. forgetting… These oppositions

are represented by the two main characters and symbolize man’s eternal duality and the violence that it has

wreaked since the dawn of time

Since 1989, the militants of Act Up have led a tireless battle against AIDS. For the release of the film 120 Beats per Minute, winner of the Grand Prize at the Cannes Festival, Denoël is republishing this cornerstone text with a new preface by Didier Lestrade. In 1989, Didier Lestrade, along with Pascal Loubet and Luc Coulavin, created Act Up-Paris, based on

the model of Act Up-New York. This text tells the story of the ten years during which this association,

whose objective is to fight AIDS, crafted and carried out its political statement. Furthermore, this

work explains how the association successfully made visible HIV-positive individuals and the gay

community by being heavily involved in the development of treatments. Extreme marketing

campaigns and sometimes violent ways of going about things are also detailed in these memoirs.

Unlike other works on the subject, the author drops a theoretical approach and brings the story of

the fight against death and AIDS to a human scale. He describes his emotions, his hopes, and his

doubts as well as those of the militants around him.

• Find out more: • 120 Beats per Minute, produced by Robin Campillo, was this year’s surprise at the Cannes Festival,

kindling strong emotions among the jury members, journalists, and viewers. It received the

prestigious Grand Prize and was also the recipient of the Queer Palm and the International Critic’s

Award at the festival.

An important French figure for homosexual activism, Didier Lestrade is committed to the fight

against AIDS. He played a key role within the association Act Up-Paris, which he co-founded. He is

also a journalist for Têtu.

The Art of Flying was born in the wake of a true story: the suicide of Antonio Altarriba Lope who, on May 4,

2001 and at 95 years of age, through himself from the fifth floor of the retirement home where he lived out

his final days. As the sun set on an existence defined by tribulations and disillusionment, he took the plunge to

finally spread his wings and fly freely. Following this dramatic event, his son, Antonio Altarriba, found the

notebooks in which his father had recorded the details of his life – a discovery that inspired him to write this

astonishing bio(graphic)al novel.

The youngest child in a rural family, Antonio Altarriba Lope was born at the dawn of the twentieth century in

Peñaflor, a small village near Saragossa. From an early age, his hunger for learning set him apart from his

brothers and the other boys of his generation. His desire to leave behind the miserable existence of his

hometown for bright city lights drove him to join the hordes of millions of humiliated Spaniards without work,

without daily bread, without a roof over their heads; the losers, the defeated who endured History’s violent

upheavals: the final days of Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship, the fall of the monarchy, the Second Republic, civil

war, Franco, the exodus of the Retirada, the new monarchy, the transition to the Aznar years… In a life forged

in hope, constant struggle, defeat, and hardship, Altarriba Lope experienced the meager subsistence of the

dispossessed, fled forced drafting into the national forces, wandered through a defeated France, and joined

the Resistance to fight against the Germans before finally returning to Franco’s Spain, adding insult to injury in

a form of domestic exile…

With this fresco recounting a century of Spanish and European history through the prism of one man’s journey and his attempts to give his life meaning, Antonio Altarriba has created a graphic novel masterpiece that is further enhanced by Kim’s expressionist images. This deep and demanding graphic novel has been translated throughout the world and has received enthusiastic praise in France in particular. Six years after its publication, The Art of Flying continues to enjoy unflagging success.

Today, to celebrate Denoël’s acquisition of this work’s world rights, we are publishing a new edition with a

moving, previously unpublished “Unexpected Epilogue.” These sixteen pages of graphic novel (in color!) tell

the following story: at an autograph session at the Comédie du Livre de Montpellier, the author met a woman

who confirmed that his father “really had flown.”

In March 2016, Altarriba and Kim published L’Aile brisée (The Broken Wing) under the Denoël Graphic label.

This companion graphic novel to The Art of Flying, this time dedicated to the author’s mother, also continues

to receive outstanding praise from the press and the general public alike.

A scholar, a screenwriter and a well-known novelist in his native Spain, Antonio Altarriba first rose to

prominence in France with L’art de voler, an outstanding graphic novel devised in collaboration with Kim, and

published by Denoël Graphic in 2011 and on its way to become an international hit, so far translated in several

languages.

Kim was born in Barcelona. In 1977, he created the character Martinez El Facha, for El Jueves, a caricature of

the extreme right in Spain.

• In the press:

“After L’Art de voler, which was dedicated to his father, Spanish writer Antonio Altarriba reunites with

the graphic artist Kim to deliver L’Aile brisée, which tells the story of his mother, a silent hardworking

woman in Franco’s Spain, through the men in her life. The authors must be credited with the great merit of

having successfully conjured up their humble lives, and instilled them with a sense of tragic strength.

Through them, the destiny of an entire nation burdened and lessened by its leaders is finally restored.”

Libération

“With Kim, master of black and white nuances, Altarriba describes the difficult life of this woman, secluded

to religion since she could not become emancipated in a macho and dictatorial country. […] It is also

the finely tuned homage of a son to his mother.” M Le Magazine du Monde

“This outstanding graphic novel is the second volume in a family diptych. Imbued with neo-realism, it

offers a fresh point of view on Spain’s contemporary history, and the massive shadow still cast upon it by

Franco’s regime.” DBD

“A captivating social chronicle further enhanced by Kim’s intense and subdued graphic style.” L’Obs

“A graphic novel that tackles with nuance and subtlety all the topics it deals with, whether the story of his

mother Petra’s wedding, or the history of Spain in the 20th

century.” Le Figaro Littéraire

“L’Aile Brisée is much more than a simple biography: it is the powerful testimony of a child of the last

century.” ActuaBD

Sempé’s latest album!

After evoking his America (Sempé à New York, 2009), celebrating the carefree nature of childhood

(Enfances, 2011), and questioning the challenges of a lasting friendship (Sincères amitiés, 2015), this

time, Sempé is back in a celebration of music and musicians. In his long conversations with Marc Lecarpentier, he shares his passion for jazz, his love for Debussy,

and his admiration for of Ray Ventura and his band who saved his life.

A humorous artist although he dreamt of being a pianist, Jean-Jacques Sempé describes his fantasy

dinners with Duke Ellington, Ravel, and Satie, his excitement at hearing his first record in a shop in

Bordeaux, his unfading love for the songs of Paul Misraki or Charles Trenet that approached the

Divine before a lightness of being became suspicious.

Nearly a hundred previously unpublished drawings pay cheerful and radiant homage to musicians of

all walks of life whether they be professionals, amateurs, or children just starting out and bear

witness to the close relationship between music and humorous art which, full of warmth and good-

will, invites us to fantasize and to dream.

Jean-Jacques Sempé was born in 1932 in Bordeaux. Throughout a career that began in the early

1960s and with over thirty albums to date, he created such legendary characters as Little Nicholas

(with Goscinny), Marcellin Caillou, or Raoul Taburin. He has become one of the most famous and

most popular artists in the world.
