A Conversation Before Cloud Computing

Business Executive

IT Manager

We need faster rollout of services That’ll cost you

How much? I can’t say

Isn’t there unused capacity on systems we paid for?

Possibly, but it’s all part of a virtual pool of servers

I’d rather pay by user

Not going to happen

Project Principles and Design Tenets

Principles

Open development model

‒ All code is freely available

‒ Licensed under the Apache 2.0 License

Open design process

‒ Blueprints

‒ Design Summit every 6 months to gather requirements and write specifications for next release

Open community

Basic Design Tenets

1. Scalability and elasticity are our main goals

2. Any feature that limits our main goals must be optional

3. Everything should be asynchronous

• If you can't do it async, see #2

4. All required components must be horizontally scalable

5. Always use shared nothing architecture or sharding

6. Distribute everything, especially logic

• Move logic to where state naturally exists

7. Accept eventual consistency

8. Test everything

• We require tests with submitted code
