Dear VillagersAfter a few months of being online we returnto printed copy for TemeTalk this month, andit is good to be able to reach some folks whoare not internet enabled. So if that is you –great to be in touch again through the printedword – we’ve missed you! The virus pandemic has changed so manythings and forced us to work and communi-cate in different ways and to develop newhabits. The local has become much more im-portant in many people’s lives, and at times ithas felt that we are strangely disconnectedfrom the events we witness through our TVscreens. During this time many of us havefound joy in the detail of nature, in bird songand the chance conversation with a someone –on the phone or keeping social distance ofcourse! There has been so much change in such ashort space of time, and in many ways comingout of lockdown has been much more complexthan going into it. Entering lockdown was fastand the rules clear, but coming out has meantdifferent guidelines for different people, andthis will continue for a while to come I expect. Some positive news is that our church build-ings can now be open for private prayer, andwe hope to be able to open in rotation throughthe week from 6th July. Keeping each othersafe is an important part of ‘loving your neigh-bour’ so expect signs reminding us about so-cial distancing and for hand sanitiser andcleaning spray to be available. At the time ofwriting our plan just needs final approval andyou can find details elsewhere in TemeTalk. Our on-line services have been a delight to de-velop and have been watched by many, and

they will continue for the time being. July heralds high summer and hopefullysome warm summer evenings to be enjoyed inour gardens and outdoors. So do enjoy… it willbe a quieter July than many had planned but,as we re-orientate, I pray that we allow our-selves some space to settle into this new season.Maybe we have the gift of time to see what newhabits we want to keep, and what old ones it istime to gently lay down for good.

Rochford Village HallLockdown is gradually being lifted but we’restill not able to plan many community activi-ties at the moment. Hopefully things will im-prove soon. Action with Communities in RuralEngland (ACRE) has issued guidance on there-opening of Village Halls which will beamended by 4th July and some halls may re-open on Monday 6th July, so hopefully some-thing will happen soon.

Coronavirus Care GroupThe Rochford Tenbury Coronavirus CareGroup will continue helping out with collect-ing prescriptions, shopping and sharing onlinedeliveries and local information. This is bene-fiting many people in the village so a big thankyou to everyone involved in delivering thisservice.

Rochford rallies roundAs reported in the online versions of the mag-azine last month, Rochford has rallied to sup-port the NHS and a grand total of 101 scrubsbags and 50 headbands and numerous grati-tude gifts have been sent to the NHS, benefit-ting Tenbury, Malvern and Worcesterhospitals. The Rochford response has beenmarvellous. A special thank you to our indus-trious sewing ladies, Gillian, Angela, Michelle,Jenny, Sue, Barbara (from Hanley) and Hayley. Also thanks to Ann and Jane, our laundry andpacking ladies. It has been a fantastic team ef-fort. Congratulations and thank you to every-one who has helped – we have all made adifference.

Neighbourhood lunchNeighbourhood lunches have been sus-pended, but Ann is prepared to cook a meal onFriday 17th July which can be collected or de-livered to your home for just £5. Please contactAnn on 01584 781317 by Friday 10th July if youwould like one.

Rochford ChurchRochford Church will be open for privateprayer on Sundays and Wednesdays from 9amto 6pm, so please feel free to visit and enjoy thelovely peaceful location and the welcome thatRochford Church will give you. Please followthe laminated instructions for visitors in theporch and use the hand sanitiser gel and dis-posable gloves during your visit.

Rochford Open GardensAs mentioned in the online versions of themagazine, lockdown has put villages into aplanning blight with regard to arranging com-munity and village fund raising activities.Rochford is still hoping to arrange an OpenGardens and Afternoon Tea this summer, withsocial distancing. So if you have been spendingmore time than usual in your garden andwould be willing to let people look around, please let Ann or me know and hopefully wewill still be able to arrange something later thissummer. It would be great to have a variety ofgardens to visit in the village, ending up withafternoon tea.

The months seem to fly by ever faster for someand not quickly enough for others. Most of ushave adapted to the hugely changed environ-ment, largely in a positive and hopeful way. Theeasing of restrictions will of course come at acost. Anyone who has had the experience of arelative in hospital at this time will recognisethat you are very much on your own and needto still be vigilant and not too casual. Nature, as lots of people have recognised, has seemed to be much closer lately. We wereentertained every day in early June by MrBlackbird singing his heart out always from thesame spot on the top of the hedge and eventu-ally meeting his wife on the front lawn oneevening! A particularly greedy woodpecker hasstuffed himself with peanuts for about threeweeks but sadly I have only heard the cuckooonce this year. Although the weather has broken, at theheight of the good spell when the ground wasas hard as hard could be Paul Blakeway told mehe filled two buckets of water up every eveningand made mud of a consistency which made iteasier for the swallows to make their nests –good for him.

Some words and phrases will be for ever re-membered from this time – furlough, social dis-tancing, passed etc. In my case social distancingwhilst cycling is never a problem. I realised along time ago that all the fancy gear in theworld did you no favours in any performance. So out with the bike, no lycra (in which I wouldlook pretty ridiculous anyway) and off I havebeen setting in my gardening clothes, up anddown all our hills, to be passed in a flash byyounger riders and older ones – and in the blinkof an eye they have been far more than two me-tres away – no worries there then. If you have a contribution you would likeme to mention in future Hanley Happenings, please do let me know.

Stanford • Stanford • StanfordWhere to begin? At the time of writing (16th June – my Dad’s100th birthday if he had still been with us!) –lockdown is further relaxing and we are con-sidering re-opening churches for private prayer– see below and elsewhere in the magazine. When the crisis is over, Amber Spilsbury(07966 294032) would like to host a fête – she islooking for people to assist in preparation andmaking it happen. We do not have a date butmaybe August?

St Mary’s ChurchThe PCC has decided to open most of ourchurches for private prayer on one day a week– see parish details on page 3. In Stanford wewill open St Mary’s from 9am to 6pm everyThursday from 9th July. There will be a contin-ued need for social distancing when in thechurch and you will be asked to use the pro-vided hand sanitiser both on entering thechurch and on leaving. It will be some time be-fore we can have the church open every day orhave public services. However if you have ac-cess to the internet, each of our Sunday servicesis recorded and available on our TVS Servicesin a time of Crisis on the TVS website(www.temevalleysouth.org.uk/services/ )

Grow the Tallest Sunflower ...The Grow the Tallest Sunflower Challenge con-tinues. Jo Strickland launched this in May andoccasionally I see impressive looking plants! No one has sent me any tips for growing giantplants but we’re still happy to get suggestions.

And this month’s challenge –Lockdown LocksThis month we are offering the LockdownLocks Challenge (for those of you who are fol-lically challenged – remember what my Mumused to say: “grass doesn’t grow on a busystreet!”) If you, like me, are going mad withyour dreadlocks, take a photograph of yourselfbefore you go to the hairdressers (if they areopen) and we will feature photographs in ournext edition – send a donation to St Mary’s andyour photograph to me.

Help if you need itA number of people in the village are offeringhelp and support (including shopping and reg-ular electronic contact) at this difficult time. Ifyou need assistance please phone Robin on01886 853295 and he will refer you to the ap-propriate person. If you feel that you wouldlike to help, please contact Robin.

Parish Giving SchemeEach church in the parish is signing up to thisscheme. It works on the basis of a monthly di-rect debit from subscribers’ accounts, includingautomatic Gift Aid if the subscriber pays tax.Stanford has its own account – more detailsnext month. Several people have kindly made donationsto St Mary’s while the church has been closed. You can do this online if you have internetbanking. The account name is TVS PCC Stan-ford with Orleton, sort code 20-39-64, accountnumber 90778303.

Volunteers please – againPeople have recently joined both the ChurchCommittee and the Village Hall Committee butwe would welcome some more, especially whenthe crisis is over. What should we do to celebratethe end of the crisis? Robin (01886 853295) ishappy to explain what is involved and you arewelcome to one of our meetings when theyrestart so that you can see what it is like. We needpeople to organise events and assist.

ThanksMany thanks to David who has offered to deliverthis edition of TemeTalk door-to-door in Stan-ford.

“Serving The Teme Valley & Beyond”

From the Registers(catching up for those who were not able to accesson-line TemeTalk)

Our prayers and sympathy are with the familyand friends of Mr T Gwyn-Jones of Kyre Park, whose graveside funeral in St Mary’s Church-yard took place on 30th April. We also note with the sadness the passing ofJohn Leftwich whose funeral was on 28th May.We have been praying for his family andfriends. May they rest in peace and rise in glory.

A Prayer before DawnLord, in those dark days of fear and isolationI reached out my hand and you held it.When I felt lost and alone, you found me and walked beside me,you comforted me and guided me back on tothe path.As the dark clouds of despair and fear gatheredaround meYou gave me hope and you taught me to listento your voice. Now as I see the first light of hope begin tobreak across the earth and herald a new way of life;I thank you for the courage and strengthyou give me to face each day.I thank you for this time to mournI thank you for new friends and relationshipsI thank you for time to reflectI thank you for your love

Word of the monthThis month’s word is floccinaucinihilipilification a lovely word meaning the action or habit ofestimating something as worthless – “I was offended by my friends floccinaucinihilipilificationof my new car”. It’s one of the longest words in English, but an even longer one, ironically thename for a fear of long words, is hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Try dropping thatone casually into the conversation!

Today, 18th June, the TemeTalk deadline, isalso Paul McCartney’s birthday. He’s 78. Thisdate is a fact which has lived in my head since1962, when they released their first record andI fell in love. I was 13. Paul was the one I fell inlove with – I thought John looked a bit danger-ous, although I came to love him too, later. At my school you had to choose betweenthe Beatles and the Rolling Stones. My friendsand I all liked the Beatles. We thought the girlswho liked the Stones were a bit rough. When I was 14 I went to Guernsey with mymum for a holiday and she bought tickets forus to see the Beatles at the Candie Gardens on8th August. I remember being in the venue sur-rounded by screaming girls, but I was struckdumb, totally inhibited and embarrassed bymy mother who was sitting next to me. Theysang She Loves You and Twist and Shout and Iswooned (silently) with happiness. Afterwards I queued at the stage door andgot their autographs, which I’ve kept eversince in my underwear drawer. The Bosswould like me to sell them, but although I wasthere and I saw them, I still have a naggingfeeling that the signatures might be fakes andmy disappointment 57 years later would be toomuch to bear.

I loved Paul for many years. I wanted tomarry him, of course, but if I couldn’t havehim I thought Jane Asher would do. I wasn’tsure about Linda but she did make him happy.I think I fell out of love with him when he mar-ried Heather Mills and started dyeing his hair. But I still have a tiny place in my heart for him.I hope he’s happy now with some womancalled Nancy. John Lennon’s birthday is also lodged in myhead. The first time I visited my son David inManhattan, in 2005, he took me to a bar and theman sitting next to me was telling anyone whowould listen that it was John Lennon’s birth-day. “No it isn’t,” I told him. “It’s tomorrow,9th October.” The following day David took us to Straw-berry Fields, the little bit of Central Park dedi-cated to John, just across the road from theDakota Building where he was shot dead in1980. It was full of people singing, playing gui-tars and remembering him on his birthday. Itwas strangely moving. My favourite Beatles film is A Hard Day’sNight. When it came to my local cinema in1964 I went to see it every day for a week, onmy own and secretly.

We have reached Sunday 17th November on ourpilgrimage. We are visiting Dan National Parkin the Upper Galilee region, a fertile area withstreams and woodland. Here also is a militarytrench dating from thefirst Lebanese war –you can see Lebanonfrom here. Tel Dan isthe Northern equiva-lent of Tel Be’er Shevain the south. We hadactually travelled theentire length, south tonorth, of the ancient Is-raelite kingdom. Theruins here were impres-sive, a stone with refer-ence to the House ofDavid, the only refer-ence outside the bible toDavid. There was alsoa mud brick Canaanite city gate, about 4,500years old, the oldest complete city gate in theworld! We went from there to Caesarea Philippi, where there had been a temple dedicated to Pan

and where Jesus asked ‘who do you say that Iam?’ After lunch we travelled high up in thehills to Nimrod Fortress on the southern slopesof Mount Hermon which overlooks the Golan

Heights. This area islegally in Syria. Thefortress was probablybuilt by the son of Sal-adin and used from the13th to the 18th century, but was eventually de-stroyed by an earth-quake. The Druze (asmall Arabic speakingreligious group origi-nating in Western Asia)named the fortressNimrod – why? No oneknows. However weenjoyed a fascinatingwalk round this incred-

ible feat of building and architecture. The following day we visited the Horns ofHattin (an extinct volcano with twin peaks) onthe way to Nazareth. The plains below theHorns of Hattin saw a massacre in 1187CE. AFrench Crusader noble, seeking glory, led hisarmy against Saladin, having left the security oftheir defended position in Sepphoris. Saladin’sarmy was twice the size of the Crusaders withten times the number on horseback. Water couldnot be accessed as it was behind Saladin’s army. The Crusaders were slaughtered We went on to visit the largest church in theMiddle East, the Roman Catholic Church of theAnnunciation in Nazareth, and then Nazarethvillage which brought to life Nazareth as it prob-ably was in Jesus’ time. We saw the tools of Hisfamily’s trade, how meals were eaten and whatwas eaten, clothing and accommodation. It wasa lovely enactment of how life would have beenin the first century and how Jesus would havelived His young life. We then had a first centurylunch, which rounded this visit off beautifully –the food was great! In the afternoon we visitedMegiddo, a large, complex archaeological site.According to the Bible this is where the final bat-tle will take place – Armageddon. The next day saw us in Capernaum which is

where Jesus based his Ministry and called hisDisciples. We visited Mensa Christi (table of theLord) and remembered the resurrection break-fast and where Jesus reinstated Peter; we alsovisited the church that recallsthe multiplication of theloaves and fishes and ad-mired its beautiful mosaicfloor. Holy Communion thatday was celebrated by theshores of the Sea of Galilee. This was especially movingfor me – not only was it so lovely by the sea, framed by trees swaying gently in the breeze, but it was taken by a longstanding friend of myfamily who had recently become ordained, so avery special occasion for both of us. We thenvisited an eight sided church that commemo-rates the telling of the Beatitudes. Lunch wasnext door and there was a choice of Peterfish* orchicken schnitzel – I was so pleased to have cho-sen the chicken! After lunch we visited anotherarchaeological site, Magdala, a first centurytown on the shores of the lake where, some be-lieve, Mary Magdalene came from. Then a boattrip on the Sea of Galilee. It was a strange feel-ing to think that Jesus had sailed on these verywaters. Although we did not see it, we weretold there was a first century fishing boat whichhad been discovered in the mud when the seawas very low one year. Apparently it is surpris-ingly large and one could imagine Jesus sailingon such a boat, known by some as ‘Jesus Boat’ . The final day! We started by exploring theancient city of Acre, a Crusader city; the storygoes that after the Crusaders left it was orderedto be destroyed, but it was so well built that it

was impossible to destroy so it was buried in-stead and a new city built on top. It was recentlydecided to excavate the old city and it is nowopen for visitors. It is absolutely amazing thatfor so many centuries it had been buried yet, asan excavation site, it looked pristine. The brick-

work, untouched by theweather, was as if it had beenbuilt yesterday, the colourswere bright and looked new!Our final lunch was taken atCaesarea Maritima, right onthe water’s edge, the Mediter-

ranean, a beautiful deep blue! After lunch, wewent a little further along the coast to anotherhuge archaeological area. Herod had been givena village here and named it Caesarea after Octa-vian Augustus Caesar and built a huge port cityon the site. Amongst many other buildings, hebuilt a huge theatre which has become the mostancient theatre in Israel, again in wonderful con-dition. We climbed the steps and sat overlook-ing the great arena and out to sea. To see thewhole site would have taken many hours, butwe had to catch a plane and were grateful forwhat we had seen as we boarded the coach forour final trip to Tel Aviv and home!

I have made use of notes that were given to usby our leader, Rev Ted Whittaker, to whom I ammost grateful, not just for the notes but for thekind and humorous way he ensured everythingwent well.

*Peterfish: for those who do not know, the fishis cooked whole, complete with head, eyes, tailand everything in between, including hundredsof bones!!

I work in retail and my company says it'sstarting to look at how we might reopen laterin the summer. This is making me so anxious, even though I don't have any special healthissues. I'm going to wear a mask, but not allthe customers may do so. I used to take thebus to work, I don't have a car and I think it'stoo far to cycle. And I'm not even sure if mykids will be back at school by then! Thethought of returning to work is keeping meawake at night. Do I have to go back to work?

It’s understandable you’re feeling anxious. However, the short answer to your question isyes, you do need to comply with any reason-able management request to return to work. The key here is “reasonable”. The govern-ment has published specific guidance for dif-ferent businesses on the steps they can take tominimise coronavirus transmission. If youdon’t think they’re complying, or are puttingyour health at risk, you should talk to themabout this. Similarly, they should listen to your concernsabout using public transport. You could, for in-

stance, ask to travel at a quieter time of day. And the government has said that if you’reunable to work because of childcare issues youremployer can continue to furlough you. We would suggest approaching this as aproblem that you and your boss can solve to-gether. But if you do get a bad reaction, youcould report your employer to the Health andSafety Executive. You should also get adviceabout your legal rights in this situation. For further information and advice, contactyour local Citizens Advice Bureau or seewww.adviceguide.org.uk.

Due to guidance on Covid-19 we have suspendedour face-to-face sessions. Our volunteers will be pro-viding advice by telephone and email as follows:MalvernTo speak to an adviser, please ring 01684 563611 op-tion 1,  or email  [email protected]

Carole Gardner from Hanley Broadheath has beenvery ill for over a year and is now well on the way torecovery. Here she describes her first tentative walksaround Bell Lane and thanks everyone who hashelped her to get this far.

A massive thank you to all my friends and dogwalkers who have asked about my health everytime Michael and Digger have met them ontheir daily walk. It’s been a constant reminderto me of how important it is to be surroundedby a caring and supportive group of people.I’ve been in virtual lockdown for over a yearand until last week only ventured out of thehouse for chemotherapy or hospital tests. Yourgood wishes have kept both of us going, thankyou! Now I am going for walks again, unable tohold Digger yet but that will come. I startedwalking to the bottom of Bell Lane at 5am to besure of not meeting anyone, now I get round theblock in the evening and now I mean to start a

lunchtime walk as well. I hope you all recognise me, no hair and aweight loss of 7 stone! However there are posi-tives – I have just made and eaten two creamchocolate eclairs and have cake every after-noon! No weight gain yet but it will come. Enough of me, I hope that you have allstayed healthy and have coped with incarcera-tion in this glorious countryside. Many thanks again to Julia, Graham, Peterand Margie and Chris and Graham Dalton forall they have done for me – and in particularMichael who has looked after me so well andendured the temporary shut down of hisbeloved golf club.

Whilst pulling up huge amounts of yards-longstreamers of goose-grass, clearly planning atakeover of my garden from behind a largeshrub, I pondered whether there was enoughto say about this commonplace weed to fill awhole article. Stop reading now if you thinkthe answer should be no. As a child, I was always amused by throw-ing its sticky stems at friends or family whenout on a country walk and I hope that, even in

the days of the smartphone, somechildren still do the same. Goose-grass, perhaps more correctlycalled cleavers, has many localnames – sticky willy, herriff, gosling weed, sticky bobs andclaggy meggie, to name but a few.Botanically termed Galiumaparine, it is an annual member ofthe bedstraw family which cangrow an impressive 10 feet in justone season. In common with net-tles and elderberries it only growsnear human habitation, wherephosphate from manure is avail-able in sufficiently high concentra-

tions in the soil. Thin bright green leaves are arranged inwhorls of six to eight around a hollow four-sided stem and most parts, including the dou-ble fruits, are covered with backward facingprickles. These are designed to hitch onto apassing furry animal and then to reach andconquer pastures new. The tiny inconspicuousflowers appear briefly between June and Au-gust and comprise four minute white petals. The goose and gosling names came aboutbecause it was traditionally fed to geese, andthey appear to like it too, but it was also onceeaten by humans. In old herbals, cooked in abroth, it was said to “keep them lank and leanthat are apt to grow fat”. I found a modern-day foragers’ recipe for an interesting-sound-ing herb and potato soup using the leaves, butI can’t recommend it as I haven’t given it a go.

Neither have I roasted and ground the seedsto make a substitute for coffee, as in anotherrecipe I found. The leaves and seeds are sotiny that I don’t think the time spent in pickingthem can be justified, but I can certainly seehow they could keep you lank and lean. A creature with a genuine taste for theseeds is the bank vole. I once spotted one ofthese little animals clambering gingerly up atall stem to reach them. It was so intent on itsgoal that it didn’t even notice me watchingquietly as it climbed. A completely differentuse for the seeds was discovered by Bedford-shire lacemakers, who slipped them over theends of their brass pins to make their workeasier on the fingers. The tall but rather weak growth of theplant is designed to allow it to bend against amore robust structure which it then uses as asupport. It commonly grows against hedges, but I’d advise not to let it stay there, particu-larly if the hedge is newly planted or newlylaid. As a local countryman once told us whenwe first moved to the Teme valley twenty-fiveyears ago, “goose-grass can kill a hedge, cangoose-grass”. We hope that the next meeting of the TemeValley Wildlife Group will be on Thursday 9th

July, when we welcome back James Woodend. His talk is called ”Bears in Canada ”. Those ofyou who so enjoyed his previous talk have re-quested this one. The meeting will be held atStoke Bliss and Kyre village hall at 7.30pm. Itis just £2 on the door, everyone welcome.

Croquet is one of the finestoutdoor sports. It is a friendlygame combining ball skills as

well as tactics, it’s relatively easy to under-stand, and it’s fun to play. Croquet relies ontouch, accuracy and tactics rather than speedand strength, so it’s playable by anyone of anyage on equal terms. It’s also a good sport toplay when social distancing is important. Croquet can be played as light-heartedly asit can seriously. There are a few basic skills tolearn but most people get the hang of thesewithin a few minutes and these are enough togive you immediate fun. Many people arehappy to go along to the Club, meet theirfriends, have a cup of tea and bash a few ballsthrough hoops! Broadwas Croquet Club would love to wel-come new members. At the moment the Clubhas only just emerged from lockdown, whenthey had to lock up the pavilion, close thelawns and ride out the storm. But they’ve wasted no time over the last fewweeks in preparing the lawns for play as soonas it was deemed safe to do so. Members arenow able to play both singles and doubles, butwith strict rules in place including proper dis-tancing and copious hand-sanitising points

around the ground. The Club is beginning tocome alive again although league games andinternal competitions remain on hold for thetime being. So it won’t be long before the Club is able toextend a warm welcome to prospective newmembers to join then in playing what is ar-guably the happiest, healthiest and certainlyone of the most enjoyable sports in the country. Why not give it a go? There will be reducedsubscription rates for the remainder of the sea-son. If you’d like some preliminary information, please contact Club Secretary John Guy on01905 748192 and he’ll be happy to explainwhat the current position is regarding member-ship and playing facilities. Broadwas Croquet Club is at Stoney Ley,Broadwas-on-Teme, which is on the A44 aboutsix miles from Worcester. Full details of how tofind the Club are on the website.

nce upon a time, in the middle ofa deep dark wood in a land notvery far away, there lived a LittleOld Clockmender. The Little OldClockmender loved clocks and

people from far and wide brought their oldbroken timepieces to him so that he could putthem back together. Soon his fame as a clockmender had spreadso far that the king came to hear of him. Theking had a very valuable clock thathad lain broken and neglected inone of the furthest corners of hishuge palace for many years becauseno-one could make it chime. So theking called for the Little Old Clock-mender and said, “Little Old Clock-mender, if you can mend my clockI will give you my beautiful daugh-ter as a bride. But if you fail, woebetide you!” The Little Old Clockmendertook the clock home and began towork on it. It was a grandfatherclock of great age with a golden dialand a heavily carved rosewood caseand he knew that it was priceless, but to him it was just like any otherwounded clock that needed hiscare. He worked long into the night, taking the clock to pieces and lay-ing out the tiny clogs and wheels, nuts and bolts in his little work-shop. Now the Little Old Clockmender alreadyhad a wife, a lovely girl who had given himtwo adorable children. When she heard of theking’s bargain she became anxious, and some-times crept into the Little Old Clockmender’sworkshop in the middle of the night to stealsome vital part so that the work might take alittle longer. But the Little Old Clockmenderhad magic fingers and he could find the miss-ing piece as easily as anything, even if his wifehad hidden it deep in a tub of margarine. Soone day he said to her, “wife, please don’tworry about the king’s bargain for I love youmore than all the rubies in Rochford and Iwould never swap you for a younger woman,

no matter how beautiful she might be” – whichworried her a bit because she wasn’t sure thatthere were any rubies in Rochford. Eventually the clock was ready. Its old caseshone with hours of polishing, its golden dialgleamed like the sun, its tick and its tock wereperfectly balanced, its chime was loud andtrue. The Little Old Clockmender returned theclock to the king and it was given pride of

place in the most magnificent roomin the palace. The king was de-lighted and called for his daughterto come forward, but the Little OldClockmender stopped him, saying“Sire, I already have a beautifulwife who is more valuable to methan all the rubies in Rochford andI seek no reward for my work, other than the satisfaction of seeingyour wonderful clock restored toits former glory and once againchiming the hours for you and allyour courtiers.”

The king was moved by thesewords (although his daughter wasa bit miffed as she was by nowolder and much less beautiful thanshe had been when the bargain wasstruck) and he gave the Little OldClockmender a wonderful newhouse, big enough for him, hiswife, his two adorable children andall the clocks he could find that

needed his tender loving care, and soon thekitchen was full of tiny cogs and wheels andthe rooms rang with the happy sound of chim-ing clocks from morning till night. His wife, however, began to wonder ... butthat’s another story.

With no forthcoming events to report, we’ve re-placed the What’s On page with a fairy story to keepyou amused this month. I wrote it for a friend ofmine some years ago – he loved mending clocks andhe really did keep the smallest parts in a tub of mar-garine, not to hide them but to keep them safe.
