discovered the Vintage and Modern website by accident, and now lookat it regularly. It is a gold mine of antique, modern and eclectic furnish-
ing. Not only is there furniture but accessories as well. They have manyone-of-a-kind, original modern designer items, along with other designers, not necessarily modern style. The website is vandm.com. Take a look. You’llenjoy it!! —Christine Putman, Menasha, WI
needed an idea for a cake for my eight-year-old son’s birthday. He wasn’t exactly sure what
he wanted. I found Cakecentral.com and we satfor hours going through the images of cakes andcupcakes ... they are incredible! It gave me so
many ideas of future cakes to make. I can’t waitto make a copy of a soccer team cake for a teamparty. Who would have known what you could dowith cake! It’s no longer a 9x16 pan with yellowcake mix and white frosting. Get creative!

ne website that I came across recently isSmilebox.com. Here is why it is so great: it’s
absolutely free! Smilebox is a photo service that
lets you create and send personalized ecards, andshare photos by creating a slideshow that you canpost directly to your Facebook page or personalblog. You can even scrapbook digitally! There are“premium options” which you would pay for, butfor the most part, the basic services are all free of charge. So go ahead and check it out!

Clad in a dark blue blazer, designer
jeans and a crisp, bright-white button-down shirt, Joseph Fiennes is the
epitome o class. Resting back a bit
in his chair in a spacious bungalow in
Pasadena’s posh Huntington Hotel, he’s
relaxed yet ocused. And he’s everything
you’d imagine him to be—respectul
and so wonderully English. Make that
English (Salisbury, Wiltshire) by way o
being raised in West Cork, Ireland.
But then … as you experience more
o Fiennes, you realize that the dashing
man is actually one thing you may nothave ever realized he was—a noncon-
ormist.“I wouldn’t really give any advice,” Fiennes
admits when asked about how to live one’s lie
outside o the box. “Probably because I think
the human mind wants to latch onto an idea
or an emotion like a leech and then, once it’s
set on the idea, it’s no longer cherished; it’s
slightly destroyed.“I think you can live well by advice, but I think
what you need to do is eel without thinking,”
he adds with sheer grace. “In act, my advice,
even though I said I wouldn’t give it, would beto shut up the senseless chatter o the mind
and … just eel.”
And so it goes with one o Hollywood’s more
proound artists. Here’s a man with an open
heart, yes, but somebody who apparently
is also smart enough not to get caught up in
the trappings o “ame.” When his celebrity
soared to great heights ater starring oppositeGwyneth Paltrow in 1999’s indelible, Oscar-win-
ning Shakespeare in Love, Fiennes did some-
thing absolutely unpredictable. He respectully
turned down a fve-picture deal with Miramax,
all so that he could return to a place that just
“elt” better—the stage. >>>

Finding Fiennes
d!: InCamelot , Merlin is gutsy. In what
ways do you eel you are courageous?
JF: [Laughs] By getting back into a pair
o tights.
d!: Who do you most admire in history?
JF: Desmond Tutu. He’s an extraordinary
man that had to look at the essenceo orgiveness and how to bring a re-
ally ractured landscape to pull itsel
into unity—without shedding blood.
It was a brutal program o truth and
reconciliation aer apartheid, but
somehow, it moved South Arica
orward in a way I don’t think other
countries can do.
d!: When you think o home, what
comes to mind?
JF: My wie, my daughter, and the twolittle dogs we picked up in L.A. rom a
rescue home.
d!: What do you love most about acting?
JF: You get picked up by the scruf o
the neck—i you’re lucky—and get
dropped of at the ront line o a very
diferent perspective. You broaden
your mind as a consequence. And I
think that … is really a gi.
(At the time he reportedly noted: “I wentback to what my initial voice was … I thatmeant not ollowing up with a typical leading-man role, then that’s what it is. I’m an actor, and whatever speaks to me I will do.”)
It’s just one o many indicators that Fiennes,a Screen Actors Guild Award-winner, march-es to the beat o other creative percussions.Completely comortable in his own skin,he sets a stellar example o how to remaintrue to onesel by making lie choices morerom the “heart” than the head.Enter Camelot , the epic and impressive
10-part mini-series hitting Starz this month. At rst glance, the “King Arthur reboot”seems to be the perect vehicle or Fiennes, who takes on the pivotal role o Merlin op-posite Jamie Campbell Bower’s (The Twilight Saga) young, reckless Arthur. The show is
lush with legend and, oh so English. But Fiennes saw other possibilities with
the role.“I thought, ‘you know, fy or ail, I’m going
to have un with Merlin,’” he says with en-thusiasm. “I thought, I, as an actor, am goingto tackle Merlin in a dierent way—dispensewith the long hair, the prophet-like look, withthe beard and the long sta and the pointyhat, and I am going to do more o a bullish, warrior monk.”Eva Green costars as Arthur’s dark yet pow-
erul hal-sister Morgan and Tamsin Egertontakes on Guinevere. Collectively, Fiennes
notes that the kinetic energy amongst thecast made stepping into this series all themore inviting. His instincts to take on the rolewere right on, but those instincts must havebeen nurtured at a younger age.“My mother and my ather [Jini and Mark
Fiennes] were the greatest infuences in termso my creativity and what I do,” Fiennes opensup. “One o my mom’s phrases was, ‘Put yourguts into it. You have to instill your presencewith discipline as much as just winging it.’”As a result, the Fienneses exposed their
children to literature, great writing, the arts.“My mother was a writer and an artist,”
Fiennes notes. “She elt that the whole world
was integral to our society. Typically, it is thathere’s politics, sports and then the arts. Thawas never the case [at home]—that the artwere second best. It was vital and pertinentI grew up in that atmosphere, that belie. I
was encouraged.”So much so that Fiennes, a raternal twin
and the youngest o six siblings—oldebrother Ralph also turns heads on screen—plunged into art school and later consumedhimsel in theater at the Guildhall School oMusic and Drama. He stood out in numerous stage productions and captured the eyeo producers, who cast him in standout lmroles like Stealing Beauty and Elizabeth. Hecareully chose his roles ater Shakespeare iLove—everything rom Luther , The Merchanof Venice, Running With Scissors and, morerecently, TV’s FlashForward lled an emo
tional purpose or Fiennes.
Still, deep as he is, the creatively adventurou40-year-old may not have realized he’d begoing deeper. Ater the birth o his daughtewith his wie Maria Dolores Dieguez last year
suddenly lie—living—had new purposeBecoming a ather allowed him to explore adierent rontier within himsel.“What I am learning about mysel lately
comes rom my inant daughter. Suddenly, itmore about this little person; how they showup and mirror aspects o yoursel.“[Children] are so uniquely dierent than
you,” he muses. “Yet at the same time, yoshare so much with this amazing being. I’mlearning about a kind o evolution o mindbody and spirit in the most extraordinaryway—seeing all that as it silently lters intothe oasis o my brain … and my heart.”

The King’s SpeechAcademy Award-winning screenwriterWilliam Goldman once said o Hollywood, “Nobody knowsanything.” Each year when theyassess the presumed star-studdedhits that went on to bomb at the boxofce or the modest productions thatthe public unexpectedly took to itscollective heart, he is proven right.Who would have expected that a flmabout an obscure British king whostruggles to overcome his stutterwould be the year’s most celebratedflm. Colin Firth gives an indelibleperormance as Prince Albert, theman who would be King George VI,crowned in 1937 ater his brotherEdward VIII abdicated the throneor the woman he loved. George’ssel-doubts about his ftness to ruleduring a time o economic tumultare ueled by his debilitating stutter.
Enter Lionel Logue (Georey Rush),a struggling speech therapist withunorthodox methods who is recruitedby the King’s nurturing wie (HelenaBonham Carter). The King’s Speech charts their unlikely riendship as anincreasingly panicked George acesthe prospect o a radio address to hispeople in which he will declare war onGermany. Written by David Seidler, who himsel suered rom a childhoodstutter, and artully realized by directorTom Hooper, The King’s Speech rules.Rated R.
Made in DagenhamThe year is 1968. The place is theFord actory in the London suburb o Dagenham. The women sew car seatupholstery in deplorable conditionsin an outdated plant. Worse, theyare being reclassifed as unskilledlabor and make a raction o whattheir male co-workers make. GoldenGlobe-winning star Sally Hawkinsis Rita, an unlikely candidate whobecomes the leader o an equal paymovement ater the plant’s union rep(Bob Hoskins) selects her to attend
a meeting with Ford managementwhere she angrily threatens a strike. From here, she and her co-workersare on a collision course with Ford, the area’s largest employer, whichthreatens to shut down the actory. They gain a champion in BarbaraCastle (Miranda Richardson), theSecretary o State or Employmentand Productivity, as well as supportrom the wie (Rosamund Pike) o a Ford executive. With its spiritedperormances and period-settingsoundtrack o classic AM rock,
Made in Dagenham is an efcientlyassembled crowd-pleaser. Rated R.
Rabbit HoleRabbit Hole is a wrenching andpowerully sad flm, and yet theinsightul screenplay by David LindAbaire (based on his own PulitzerPrize-winning play), sensitive directby John Cameron Mitchell, andexceptional perormances by NicolKidman, Aaron Eckhart, and DianneWiest elevate what in lesser handscould have been a shallow movie othe week. Kidman and Eckhart staras Becca and Howie coping, but noreally, with the death o their our-yold son. They are at cross-purposesshe wants to let go, and he wants thold on, watching home movies othe once happy amily. Becca doesnot take to group therapy. She rebHowie’s romantic advances, as wellas the counsel o her mother (WiesHowie bonds with Gabby (SandraOh), a member o the support grou
or eight years. Meanwhile, Beccaseeks out the high school boy whoaccidentally killed her son. Rabbit Hole is not without humor, pitch blthough it may be. And it is not withhope. When Becca asks her mothethe pain ever goes away, she replie“No. It changes. The weight o it.” Rabbit Hole deals with unimaginabloss and grie, but it never eels heaRated PG-13.
The Fighter David O. Russell’s The Fighter is a
boxing movie like Chariots of Fire is about track. Much grittier, butjust as rousing, it was one o 2010’sbest flms, and certainly one o thebest acted. From A-listers and Oscnominees Mark Wahlberg, ChristianBale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leoto the unknowns who punch up theflm with authentic local color, thereisn’t a bum in the cast. Wahlberg, who trained or our years whilewaiting to get this pet project madstars as junior welterweight MickyWard rom Lowell, Mass. Managed(or mismanaged) by his ormidablemother (Leo) and trained by hisirresponsible crackhead brotherDicky (Bale), a ormer boxer whosedays as “the pride o Lowell” arelong gone. Then he meets Charlen(Adams), a strong-willed barmaidwho encourages Micky to break rerom his amily (including his sevenintrusive sisters) to pursue his dreamWhile the boxing sequences delivethe brutal goods, the flm’s most hahitting scenes take place outside thring. Perhaps The Fighter ’s greatesachievement is that it indelibly capt
a sense o place as well as the soulthe people who populate it. Rated

A Cooking Show that Tsts th Bst By Chris Mann
America’s Test Kitchen v p p nd pd ng md n
d m v m.The long-running public television hit America’s Test Kitchen (ATK ) doesn’t need catchy buzzwords or
Hollywood hype to sell its sizzle. Instead, this engaging yet to-the-point educational program (currently in
its 11th season) lets its careully culled recipes, ood science segments, cooking equipment assessments,
and taste tests speak or themselves. The approach is practical and simple: the best ood, methods and
equipment, equal the best outcome—no matter what you’re cooking.
Unlike cable and network commercial television ood preparation shows, ATK —lmed in an actual
2,500-square-oot cooking acility by the same name near Boston—orgoes the typical mainstream
trappings o a studio audience, celebrity ches, guests, and idle chatter. On ATK , the art and science
o cooking reigns supreme.
Each hal-hour episode ofers viewers ingenious recipes that the ATK staf has tested again and again—in
some cases up to 70 times—while nding the perect mix o ingredients, methods and cooking tools oreach culinary creation. Moreover, ATK equips its audience with invaluable knowledge o the chemistry o
cooking and how chemical reactions afect ood texture and taste. Whether it’s the best way to braise, brine,
baste, blanch or bake, this program serves up all o the ixings to make you a well-educated che.

›Nurse JackieIt’s one o the best-written shows on television. Nurse
Jackie has two intoxicating things going or it—Edie
Falco, o course, who can do no wrong creatively doing
so much wrong in this Emmy Award-winning series. The
other jewel is how unapologetic the show is. True, we’re
now inundated with dramas eaturing awed charactersbut unlike, say, Shameless, which tends to play things
over the top with its lead, Falco’s pill-popping Jackie
remains a crowd-pleaser. Why? Falco shows panache,
depth and, most importantly, subtlety in a complex
role o a sel-aware addict coping with how absolutely
messed up she is. In the third season, Jackie fnds hersel
on the receiving end o an unwanted intervention, but
yet oh so skilled at masterully hiding that pill addiction
she has no intention o quitting. We love that Lady J’s
secret is out. And we’d love to—at some point soon—
discover the underlying motivations o Falco’s character
even more. The time is coming to show audiences howJacks got hersel into this emotional mess. Bring it on.

›ChaosIt revolves around a group o rogue CIA spies in the
Clandestine Administration and Oversight Services
(CHAOS). Sounds serious. But actually, Chaos is a comedy-
drama. How CBS spins this will be interesting. Ater all, threats
to national security and political infghting aren’t always the
most amusing topics, but this is
the network that worked wonders
with the CSI and NCIS ranchises.Good news: the cast is solid.
Freddy Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Six
Feet Under ) is on board alongside
Tim Blake Nelson and Christina
Cole. And what, exactly, will this
“CHAOS” team do? Leap into high-

Sunday nights stand out for the entire month, but forget everything you might expect from one
series—hello, Nurse Jackie—and embrace a few different shows that could become hits.
Behold—the month’s headturners:
›4th and Forever At frst glance, 4th
and Forever appears
to be just another re-
ality series but it’s ar
rom it. This revealing
new outing is bothbreathtaking and bold
in its vision and execu-
tion. Here, we’re taken
inside Long Beach
Polytechnic High School, a beleaguered educational institu
tion that has bred most o the nation’s NFL players. As we
ollow around some hopeuls—young men with varying lie
challenges—the series steers clear o being dramatic or even
melodramatic. By genuinely showcasing these young men
with real dreams, you witness a heartelt realness that is so
blatantly absent rom other reality bashes. “It’s everything to
me,” assures one young player o “the game.” “I sleep anddrink and think about the ootball team every day.” Anothe
teen—a ather dedicated to raising his inant son—wants
to do good so he can provide or his amily. Watch, too, o
how well the show’s writers weave in just the right amount o
revealing testimonials rom coaches who shed light on gang
issues and their attempts to keep the students ocused—
and o the streets. “Our ootball program has saved a lo
o kids,” one coach notes, adding that he’s been driven to
“look inside the young person and see what you can do to
help them.” As or Current TV, the ever brave and passionate
indie net that birthed this show? One word: Touchdown.

one o TV’s best actors: Billy Campbell a la Once and

About that … the tale revolves around
the murder o a young Seattle girl andthe subsequent police investigation.
This also marks the fth original series

the network’s glowing track record

which comes rom the irreverent minds
that made the sketch group Mail Order
Comedy such a hit on the Internet.
Forget dress codes and deadlines. Think
young—very young—sel-starters (a troika,
in act) who can prank and work with similar
levels o intensity. Whether series stars
Adam DeVine, Anders Holm and Blake
Anderson will retain their level o Web

› The BorgiasWe’ve got another “epic” series on
our hands. Here, writer-director Neil
Jordan (The Crying Game) has an
Oscar winner to mold—Jeremy Irons,
who morphs into Rodrigo Borgia, the
patriarch o one o history’s most no-
torious amilies, and the man who be-came pope in 1492. This may sound
heaven sent creatively, but on screen,
expect some hell. Borgia is manipula-
tive and scheming as he maneuvers
his way into the highest position o
power during the Italian Renaissance.
“I will not orgive ailure!” he assures
one minion. Prepare or spilled wine—
and bloodshed.
