Choosing Your New Toilet - the terminology

Environmental ConsiderationsBathrooms account for up to 50% of our daily water usage, and flushing the toilet is perhaps the number one culprit when it comes to wasting water. Old style toilets can use around 12 litres of water per flush, while more modern designs have brought this down to eight or nine litres.

Modern ‘dual flush’ toilets use a push button which allows users to choose how much water is used by selecting a short or long flush. This is a still more efficient system, using just four to six litres for a long flush and around two litres for a short flush.

All the toilets from our modern range come complete with dual flush, push button cisterns.

Wall HungThe weight of the toilet is borne entirely by a wall mounting frame; this toilet is also coupled with a concealed cistern. Keeps the bathroom floor clear and helps maximise the appearance of space. A good look for a contemporary bathroom.

Installation Advice

Your new toilet’s waste pipe may go down through the floor or straight out through the wall directly to the rear or to the left or right of the toilet. The cost and effort of moving a soil pipe is often the single most problematic part of a bathroom installation, so if your priority is an easy and inexpensive installation, choosing a toilet that’s compatible with your existing plumbing set-up is a good idea.

If you’re considering a back to wall or wall hung toilet, don’t forget that you’ll also need to buy a concealed cistern and wall mounting frame. If you prefer to avoid making alterations to your bathroom wall or building a false wall in your bathroom, a WC unit can be used to neatly conceal your cistern.

If bathroom space is tight, you’ll need to consider the projection of your toilet. A toilet with a shorter projection will take up less space in your bathroom layout; a corner fitting toilet can also be a useful addition to a small or awkwardly shaped space.

Close CoupledThe toilet cistern is situated slightly above and behind the toilet pan. The variety of styles and shapes on offer makes this toilet style suitable for both contemporary and traditional bathroom designs.

Back To WallA floor standing toilet with a concealed cistern. A back to wall toilet will usually be sited on a false wall or paired with a WC unit. More commonly found in modern bathrooms.
