Welcome to the Winter/Spring season here at Déda. I hope you find the programme

within these pages an exciting prospect.

Derby is a great place to live and work, the city is friendly, safe, diverse and vibrant. I have livedand worked in Derby for five years and I havethoroughly enjoyed the city. So much has beenachieved within the arts through greatpartnership working between the localorganisations and Derby City Council. It is rarethat you feel that the arts are really making adifference but in D erby over the past few yearsthey really have, with a whole host of activitiessuch as Derby Festé putting the city firmly onthe UK cultural map.

Derby City Council, like every other localauthority around the country, has to make cutsand I am afraid that the arts in the city are takingan extensive hit. The artistic community of Derbyrealise that cuts have to be made but it is vitalthat the right balance is found where functionalservices sit alongside those things that give usaspiration and joy. Cultural pride and vibrancyare essential qualities of a successful city, evenmore so in hard economic times.

The programme over the next four monthsincludes some fantastic dance companies fromthe UK and abroad. Retina will return for aresidency that will culminate in a performancethat promises to be inspirational and fearless. I am extremely pleased to be welcomingMotionhouse to Déda and although it will be a tight squeeze in our theatre, the companywill perform their electrifying show Scatteredin Derby for the first time.

I am afraid that we are having to raise theprices of our class programme due to financialpressures. We have not lifted the prices in five years and I still think our classes showoutstanding value. Zumba, Salsa and theAcademy are all examples of the unique offerthat Déda brings to a great city that puncheswell above its weight when it comes to artsand culture. Let’s hope it continues!

BlueprintsPresented by Joanna Geldard

“I woke up as the sun was reddening; and that was the one distinct time in my life, thestrangest moment of all, when I didn't knowwho I was – I was far away from home…”

Jack Kerouac, On the Road

An exploration of the wandering spirit of theBeat Generation, combined with notions ofspace in motion, these Blueprints are anattempt to score the body in space.

Each blueprint represents an idea for aninstallation, embodying the dilemma oftranslating the sensation of wandering intothe fixed realm.

Gathered in collections these blueprints begin to move towards architectural strategy, creating space and place as a site for memory, contemplation, and an exploration of the in-between spaces as we travel.
