A challenge is how to feed an incomingpopulation of 9 B. To meet the demand withoutsignificant increases in prices, the need is toproduce 70–100% more food, in the light ofgrowing impacts of cc, concerns over energysecurity, and the Millennium Development target of halving world poverty-hunger by 2015.

The goal is no longer simply to maximizeproductivity, but to optimize across a far more complex landscape of production, ruraldevelopment, environmental, social justice and food consumption outcomes.
