Our Gift to You Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils,

All the children and staff are getting ready for four special Christmas events to which you are invited. Christmas at primary age is a magical time and we look forward to sharing the wonder with you and your children.

The Foundation Year are joining forces with Year 1 to present their own Christmas Family Assembly this year. “The Supersonic Lamb” will be performed on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th December at 9:15 a.m. Year 2 and Y3 meanwhile are to present Disney’s stage production of Aladdin Junior on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th December both at 9:15 a.m. These times have been chosen to hopefully help parents with the potential for flexible working to attend, rather than it being in the middle of the working day. I understand that for some of you there is disappointment that we do not admit any pre-school children to the

performances, unfortunately I have seen so many events distracted by little children crying, or even running about that I made the decision a long time ago not to invite our pre-school children. I apologise for the disappointment but I believe the priority must be for the children who are performing. It is equally annoying for parents if their child’s line is lost under the background noise. Nevertheless I can offer a compromise. The assemblies are to be performed to the school as a Dress Rehearsal. If Parents/Carers wish to bring along a pre-school child or indeed would find it difficult to attend otherwise, they can attend either dress rehearsal. Please inform the office in advance if you would like to attend a Dress Rehearsal as the limited places must also be booked. The FY/Y1 dress rehearsal is on Tuesday 13th December at 9:15 a.m. and the Y2/Y3 Dress Rehearsal is on Tuesday 6th December at 9:15 a.m. ... continued overleaf ...

R Christmas continued... Making sure you don’t miss out. In order to secure tickets for our public performances please complete the booking form at the end of this newsletter; which was also sent home in hard copy; and return it to school by Thursday 1st December. Please note forms will be dated as they are received in the office and tickets issued in that order. Once the hall is full it is impossible to allocate any more tickets. There are a maximum of 2 seats available per family (at the moment). If after the initial booking period there are spares these will be released on a first come, first served basis up to a maximum of 2 more per family. Please apply directly to the school office from 8:30am on Monday 5th December. If you doubt that your child will get the form to the office please post it to school.

Meanwhile the Y4 to Y6 Christmas Celebration will be held in Beverley Minster on Monday 12th December at 7 p.m. We are calling the event a Festival of Christmas and I am sure it will be a wonderful occasion. All children from Y4 to Y6 will be performing, PLUS Y3 CHILDREN WHO ARE CHOIR MEMBERS. The event is to be spread throughout the central nave so all can get a good view. All are welcome and there are no tickets to book for this event. As indicated, the choir will be performing as well. Every Y4 to Y6 child will also be playing their Recorder. The main feature of the evening is to be a Christmas Musical “A Child is

Born” performed by all the children in Y4 to Y6. I am grateful again to the Minster staff for facilitating the event, which will be in itself an act of some faith as we shall not be rehearsing in the Minster before the event. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. This date was advertised in the November Newsletter and clearly we hope that every KS2 child will participate. If for any reason this is not possible, please write a short note or e-mail as soon as possible. This is to ensure anyone not performing is not rehearsed in a crucial role or pivotal position.

Again following beautiful concerts in previous years, the Orchestra plus featured soloists are to have their own special Festival of Christmas Music in school on Friday 9th December. This will commence at 2:30 p.m. and is a ticket only event. This event is not open to pre-school children. In addition The Friends will be serving festive refreshments from 1:45 p.m. Tickets must be booked using the Christmas Booking Form. Deadline Thursday 1st. December 2016.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS CAN YOU HELP!

Last year we asked for volunteers to help us make and decorate wreaths which we sold at the Christmas Fayre. We are making a range of Christmas decorations this year on Wednesday 30th

November from 6:00 pm in the School Hall. If you and your children are interested in coming along to help or can provide any greenery cuttings (holly, ivy, spruce) please let the office know. All welcome.

Children are very welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

“I hope our mix of Christmas events will launch the Christmas spirit”

The Friends’ Association will be serving refreshments in the hall from 8:45 am on Wednesday 7th, Thursday 8th, Wednesday 14th & Thursday 15th December and from 1:45pm on Friday 9th December to guests attending the assemblies.

R SNOW POLICY: IMPORTANT The following is taken from the school’s Safeguarding Policy and should prepare parents/carers for what to expect when it snows.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

Policy in Practice What the school does to assist in the event of icy weather conditions. It is not practical to grit the entire site, but as part of the gritting policy, safe routes round the site and across the South Playground have been identified and will be gritted before giving access to the site, thereby minimising the risks to children parents and visitors. The car park will also be gritted.

Children are not allowed to make slides on the playgrounds. Playgrounds are gritted if practical before 8:30am and when not, by morning break. At playtimes a decision as to whether children are to be allowed outside will be made by the senior teacher on duty in conjunction with a member of the Senior Management Team.

Children may not throw snowballs on the playgrounds. However if the field is covered by thick snow pupils may be allowed to play on the field in the snow, make snowman and throw snowballs. Those not wishing to throw snow (or indeed be hit by snowballs) should stay on the playgrounds. The school believes that playing in and throwing snow is part of a child’s life experiences.

In extreme cases the Headteacher may decide that there is no option but to close the school if there is presented a severe health and

safety risk. This done, the Chair of Governors and the local radio stations will be informed. A severe Health and Safety Risk would be presented if insufficient staff could reach the school or indeed the health and safety of staff meant that they should leave early. Due to the location of the school it is expected that the school will be able to remain open. Closing a school at short notice including closing mid way through a day poses considerable difficulties for parents and will only be taken as a very last resort.

A complete heating failure in the winter and/or a loss of the water supply would however result in the school having to close.

Good communication is essential. Parents receive a copy of specific instructions during the autumn and winter months via the monthly newsletters and the website. Children have the processes explained to them in the classroom. It is expected that parents adhere to these instructions and pass all relevant information to friends and relatives who may also come to school to bring and fetch children. Parents/Carers are asked to be responsible and plan more time for their journey, suitable footwear for having to walk further, wrapping up to keep warm etc....parents should not expect to be able to park close to the school at these times! Parents and visitors are expected to use the gritted paths rather than walk across the snow and ice.

Snow Policy and Procedures - information for teaching and support staff In the event of disruption caused by heavy snow the prime concern of the school must always be the safety of the pupils and staff.

It is expected that all staff will make every reasonable effort to undertake the journey to school. It is appreciated that the journey may

take longer than normal and therefore some staff may not be able to arrive before the normal start of school time. In the event of severe weather, a decision to close the school for day pupils will be made by 7am. The Head Teacher will contact Radio Humberside and Viking Radio to ask them to broadcast the information.

PARENTS WILL BE INFORMED BY TEXT IF THE SCHOOL IS TO CLOSE.Updates will be posted on the Twitter section of the school’s website. www.molescroftprimary.net

In the event of the normal timetable being suspended, a programme of activities will be organised for pupils who arrive at school. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be delegated to supervise these activities.

Rather than a full closure it is more likely that the school will remain open on a reduced capacity. In such an event, parents/carers will be asked if it is possible to make alternative arrangements for pupils. Where this is not possible the school will remain open for those who need to come to school or for those who cannot go home in the case of an unexpected early closure. As the number pupils remaining decreases, they will be moved to other classes or the hall.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

R CHRISTMAS DATES FOR THE SCHOOL CHOIR It’s the choir’s busiest season.

Every Thursday lunchtime the school is treated to the Sound of Music as the 70 members of the school choir meet up to practice with Mrs. Walker, Mr. Britton and Miss Baker. The choir adds greatly to the life of the school and often sings for us at special events. In advance may I pass on my thanks to the children for their work, sharing their talents and giving of their time. Also thanks to their parent/carers for ensuring the children can meet their out of school time bookings!

Sunday 4th December at 12:30 and 1:30pm FOMS Christmas Fayre

Thursday 15th December

Friday 16th December at 9:30 a.m. Final Assembly of 2016

In addition the choir will perform at Tescos for an hour to raise money for charity. This is not a performance and we must request no audience, as four years ago our “fans” blocked the access route through the store. Y3 are similarly to sing for an hour.

YOU ARE AMAZING! Thank you for your support. I have just heard from Mrs. Lowe that following our book fair, sponsored read and Usborne Book leaflets, we have a total of

£1,613.16 to invest in our school Library!

This a really fabulous gift that you have made to our school. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.

We are really most grateful to you all and of course to Mrs. Lowe for facilitating this.

As you may be aware the School Crossing Patrol site on Woodhall way has been vacant recently due to the School Crossing Patrol Officer been off ill.

It is with great sadness I inform you that the crossing patrol officer from this site, Brian Roche, has passed away. Brian covered the crossing for just over 4 years on Woodhall Way and will be very much missed.

Our thoughts are with his family.

Brian will probably not be replaced until after Christmas, so please take great care when crossing.

NOW LIGHT 1000 CHRISTMAS LIGHTS A special bit of magic for our children. Continuing our tradition there will be a special assembly to welcome the decoration of the Christmas tree and the start of the school’s festive preparations. This will be held on Friday 2nd December at 10:30am. Unfortunately not everyone can attend, however Governors,

Staff, Friends Association Committee Members and Volunteer Helpers are most welcome. The assembly will conclude with the lighting of both our indoor and outdoor trees. The outdoor tree is illuminated by 3000 lights provided by the Parish Centre Committee. Please note: Guests attending MUST BE ON SITE BEFORE 10am

The famous Christmas Tree Assembly, it’s a gift to the children.

THE BIG NEW IDEA The Pupil Council conducted a major review of the Charity Fundraising Campaign

The first stage of the Charity Fundraising Campaign is now over with the completion of the children’s shows and fairs. The money raised will be spent to provide “Crofty’s Bags” for the homeless in the area. Specifically the money will be used to buy the rucksacks, scarves, socks, gloves, woolly hats, compact waterproofs, water bottles, thermos cups, foil blankets, sugar sachets and can openers.

In addition may we remind families that we would like each class to collect the following articles to go in the bags. These were decided by a draw in assembly in October.

Foundation Year: Peanut Butter and SpoonsMiss John’s Class: Wet Wipes and TissuesMrs. Henderson-Tucker & Mrs. Hulse’s Class: Puzzle books, notebooks & pensMr. Williams’ Class: Disposable razors wrappedMiss Power’s Class: DeodorantMiss Spencer’s Class: Chocolate/energy bars/wrapped biscuitsMr. Wood’s Class: Liquid soapMr. Morton’s Class: ShampooMrs. Lazenby and Mrs. Ripley’s Class: Shower gel

Mrs. Grainger & Mrs. Nicholls’ Class: Tea bags and coffeeMr. Rowsell’s Class: Dried fruitMr. Britton’s Class: ToothbrushesMrs. Tippett’s Class: ToothpasteTeachers: Toilet rollsAll other staff: Combs and hair brushes. The bags created will be revealed in assembly on Friday 16th December 2016.

LOVE IN A SHOEBOX This is one of the most moving and engaging events in the school year. A simple idea which sends so much love round the world.

On 18th November we held a special assembly to receive your generous gifts of shoebox presents for children across Eastern Europe and Africa. An amazing 446 boxes were donated. This is quite astonishing as the number is more than the number of children in the school. It was a moving sight. Our boxes will be going to

Eastern Europe. Each one of these boxes will bring so much delight. As I discussed with the children however, the most amazing thing which will fall out of each box will be invisible but felt deeply. That is of course the feeling that someone out there cares.

OUR TARGET is to have ready for our our final assembly on Friday 16th December 2016 sixty Crofty’s Rucksacks ready for distribution.

We are working with charities in Hull and Beverley to organise the distribution of the bags.

The design and contents of the bags was agreed with consultation with Princes Avenue Methodist Church and their Street Angels.

MATHS MASTERY SPECIAL MEETING FOR PARENTS AND CARERS I announced in the October Newsletter that we are adopting the Singapore Maths approach designed to meet the new demands of the national curriculum.

Parents are obviously interested in how all this works. Mr. Atkinson has already presented the scheme to the Friends Association, which is part sponsoring the initiative and to governors.

AS ANNOUNCED IN THE NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER Parents have an opportunity to find out more for themselves. On Tuesday 22nd November, at 6pm, Mr Atkinson will be delivering an explanation of the “Maths No Problem” scheme and explaining its principles, how it secures effective knowledge for all and ensures the deep understanding for those with a growing talent for the subject.

It is highly recommended. Please let the office know if you would like to attend, so we can ensure we have sufficient seating. The meeting will be in

the hall as we expect a large turnout.

R Countdown to the Friends’ Christmas Fayre Donations welcome anytime On Sunday 4th December 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m. the ‘Friends’ are hosting the annual Christmas Fayre. This is, as most of you know, the biggest fundraising event of the Friends’ year and, once again are asking for your help to make it another resounding success. There will be lots of old favourites including Santa’s grotto, tombola, chocolate tombola, jam jar tombola, many games and prizes, raffle, refreshments and many craft stalls.

The ‘Friends’ will be extremely grateful for items for any of the tombola stalls – unwanted gifts, new books and toys, chocolate and soft toys. Filled jam jars (filled with anything you like) for the jam jar tombola are now a firm favourite. Please note sweets in jars must be wrapped. We regret we are unable to accept second hand books, jigsaws, DVDs, CD’s and toys (other than cuddly toys for the teddy tombola).

We will, as ever be grateful if anyone can spare an hour or so on the day to help out on a stall, set up or clear away.

The Friends Association have also asked if the Choir will be willing to provide some festive music at 12.30pm and 1:30pm. A number of games are also being organised. Last year nearly £3000 was raised at this event. The Friends work tirelessly for the school and all our pupils benefit so much from their work.

One of the obvious benefits of the work of the ‘Friends’ is the Adventure Playground, but the Friends have also purchased 84 iPads for the school. These tablets are inspiring our children across the school in their learning. The Friends bought the fully fitted kitchen for the children and are now sponsoring a new approach to teaching maths, which will touch every one of our pupils. The difference the Friends Association makes to the learning, happiness and wellbeing of your children is immense.

Please note that the Fayre opens at 11:00am ... just in time for lunch and we are catering just for you!

This is the ‘Friends’ biggest event of the year. They need your support.

The Friends Association have asked once again if the Choir could perform at 12:30pm and 1:30pm.

Witness the winners of the Voice and our other talented Moles in our charity winners’ show.

CHARITY WINNERS SHOW Monday 28th November at 5pm Following the huge success over the past three years, the children who win the various talent shows in the Charity Fundraising fortnight are to perform at a special winners’ concert at 5pm on Monday 28th November in the Hall. This

will include all the children who were selected in “The Voice” and who will “sing off” to be declared the winner.

Tickets will be available to adults and children for £2 each. A booking form has been sent home.

20 IDEAS FOR 20% GAIN OVER TO YOU!

As mentioned in the November Newsletter, I launched a new initiative in assembly. We had been studying what makes a team successful and Matthew in Year 5 pointed out that the British Cycle team became the success it is due to 20 ideas each aimed to make a 1% improvement. We, like the cycling team and indeed every Primary School in England is expected to make a big percentage gain as the bar has risen so far in

expectations. Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Pupils and governors have been invited to make 20 suggestions. So far fourteen have been made. I have extended the suggestion to parents too.

Please don’t be offended if an idea is not taken on board, we cannot change everything all at once, but I am genuinely very interested to hear of your ideas. Remember each little idea is designed to make a small difference, but cumulatively, anything is possible.

What our children are expected to know at 11 is way beyond the expectations any of us faced at 11.

School Meals are Excellent Value.Any Parent/Carer or Grandparent who would like to come to school and enjoy dinner with their children is welcome to do so. Just telephone the office before 10.00 am. on or before the school day* to reserve a meal. Please bring photo I.D. with you. Adult meals cost £3.30. A child’s meal costs £2.30. It is excellent value, and by educating children away from a diet of crisps and processed food we are together building a lifetime of good eating habits and healthy hearts.

DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID, no more than £2.30 will be accepted in arrears. Money must be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office. Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option. Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at Christmas during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies on the first week in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

YEAR 5 BIG SCHOOLS LEAGUE AT LONGCROFT- 31/10/16

Molescroft’s Year 5 were keen to get off to a good start in this first round of games in the league on Longcroft’s 3G pitches, their first competition of the season. In their opening game they played St Mary’s and got off to a good start with Matthew Rollin displaying great ball control to weave his way through the opposition. He managed to slot the ball through to Josh Henderson, precision passing greatly appreciated by the fans. Moments later Harry Jarvis was disappointed to see his shot saved by the St Mary’s keeper. Play moved from end to end, both teams evenly matched and Harvey Walters showed great defensive awareness to step up and clear the ball early. With Molescroft’s efforts thwarted by the keeper and St Mary’s unable to get through the defence, the score remained goalless.Next opponents were Cherry Burton and, as before, the game was a close one. Once again Harvey displayed his superb ‘sweeping’ abilities at the back whilst Josh Collier linked well with Matthew up front. However, a slip up at the back enabled Cherry Burton to take the lead despite all Molescroft’s hard work. Nevertheless, they soldiered on and almost equalised but Matthew’s shot was saved by the keeper. Ben Coates and Mackenzie Dennison-Buchan tackled bravely, gaining possession for their team whenever they got the chance, but unfortunately time ran out and Cherry Burton won the game by the solitary goal.Minster came next and this proved to be another close game. Molescroft started well with Harry having an early shot saved. Great tackling from Josh H allowed Matthew to claim possession and strike the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal to put his team ahead. A finger-tip

save from Theo Smith in Molescroft’s goal prevented a quick equaliser, but unfortunately he could not stem the flow of pressure and Minster managed to get the ball past him and tie the score. Sadly for Molescroft, the pressure continued and they succumbed to a further goal, disappointingly losing the game 1-2.In their fourth game Molescroft came up against Walkington and they were determined not to go down without a fight. A great surging attack from Harrison Jones enabled him to score and put his team ahead. This was followed by another fine shot from Matthew which doubled the score. Defender Alex Lawton tackled bravely and cleared well at the back along with Harvey, a promising defensive partnership developing here. Theo had little to do in goal and Josh H almost scored Molescroft’s third but unfortunately the ball hit the cross bar. Final score 2-0. Final opponents were Swinemoor and after their recent victory Molescroft were on a high. However, Swinemoor proved to be strong opposition and Molescroft were under pressure from the start. Theo pulled off a brilliant catch early, closely followed by a fantastic save to keep his team level. But, despite attempts by Molescroft they were unable to score and sadly Swinemoor could and they won by a single all important goal. With only 4 points from their five games Molescroft will need to win matches in the second and final round next week if they want to retain the trophy. Good luck boys.

YEAR 5 BIG SCHOOLS LEAGUE AT LONGCROFT- 7/11/16

After having secured 4 points last week Molescroft had a lot to do if they wanted to win this year’s trophy. They got off to a great start against Walkington. Matthew Rollin and Josh Henderson tackled well to retain possession and Josh H scored the first goal early on in the game. Their great passing skills allowed Josh H to score his second, a superb shot rattling the back of the net. Goalkeeper Theo Smith had little to do as his defensive line was held brilliantly by Harvey Walters and Alex Lawton. After a great solo run Matthew scored himself to make the final score 3-0 to Molescroft. With Henry Morris now in goal for Molescroft they took on St Mary’s, always tough opposition. Henry got off to a great start with a superb early save and Theo (now defending) cleared the ball with ease, relishing his role at the back. Josh Collier tackled strongly in midfield and Ben Coates chased the opposition down determinedly. Having a fair amount of possession Molescroft took the lead when Harry Jarvis popped up to score the all important winner. Score 1-0 to Molescroft.A bonus game against Leconfield came next and once again Matthew and Josh H showed the crowd their wonderful passing skills (a joy to watch) but unfortunately the keeper saved their shots on goal. However, Harry did score and Matthew and Josh H followed on with goals of their own quickly after. Josh C made the final score 4-0 to round off a brilliant victory. Swinemoor came next, unbeaten in the

tournament therefore strong opposition. Molescroft battled well, Harvey sweeping well at the back, Theo blocking shots and Henry pulling off save after save in goal. Unfortunately, Swinemoor were just too strong but Molescroft went down fighting losing 2-0, the score could have been much higher but for the fantastic heroics of the whole team.Another strong team from Cherry Burton were Molescroft’s next opponents and Theo was in goal for this game. Great tireless chasing and tackling from Harrison Jones and superb defending from Mackenzie Dennison-Buchan kept Cherry Burton at bay for long spells of the game. Great saves from Theo also kept the score goalless. However, under relentless pressure Molescroft eventually buckled and Cherry Burton managed to score the winning goal.Final opponents were Minster and Harry got his team off to a great start, attacking from the kick off. Shots came thick and fast but neither team were able to score. Then a shot from Matthew bobbled under the Minster keeper and rolled into the net, a lucky break for Molescroft. They didn’t rest on their laurels and further attempts came from Harrison, Harry and Josh. Molescroft held on to the victory, only just though as Minster scored seconds after the whistle but the goal was not allowed. Fantastic performances from the whole team enabled them to improve on their position in the table. However, Swinemoor won the trophy having remained unbeaten proving themselves very worthy winners.

DRESSING UP FOR CHARITY The last event of the Charity Campaign Our final day is a non-uniform day but children may also choose to be more creative and come in fancy dress. The same applies to staff! The fine for this is £1 which is the final part of the Charity Fund Raising Effort. At our final assembly for 2016 we hope to be able to announce how many bags for the homeless we have managed to buy and fill. May I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the school and the pupils, and particularly for your support of the children’s Charity Fund Raising Events. The aim is, as you know to encourage the children to think of those less fortunate than themselves and to make some small sacrifice in the terms of time, effort and pocket money. It is not designed as a major assault on parental purses and wallets!

SPORTS MOLE IN BRIEF GYMNASTICS SUCCESS

Lisa Helliwell is fast becoming a Star Gymnastics Mole. She was recently in competition at Milton Keynes.

She came 1st on Floor and 2nd on Bars. Lisa was placed 3rd overall in her age group, and that was out of 40 competitors. She scored high enough to move up a level, so she has gone from level 8 to level 7.

We are also delighted to hear of the continuing success of our older moles.

Millie Cooper came 2nd on Vault in her age group and Daisy Myles came 8th overall in her age group, both facing 40 rivals. Well done girls.
