season’s GreetinGs!

The Arts and Culture TeamBernice MorrisonManager, Arts, Culture & Theatre

Ahh, ‘tis the season - that special time of year when we take a break and reconnect with our family and friends. The truth is, though, by December we all simply want to get off the treadmill, have some fun, laugh, experience special moments and enjoy some downtime, and – yes, let’s admit it - indulge just a little!

Giving and sharing are a part of our holiday celebrations and enjoyment. We are fortunate to live in a city that embraces those values and celebrates those relationships by animating the city streets and places with such traditional family events as the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, Brampton Board of Trade Santa Claus Parade and the Brampton Downtown Development Corporation Christmas Market.

This year the Rose Theatre has “decked the halls” in anticipation of your arrival! The Arts and Culture Team welcomes our Brampton family to connect with The Rose and heighten the holiday mood by coming to one (or more!) of our outstanding shows.

Easy Gift Giving: Visit the Box Office!

What better way to spread some magic than to make memories with a loved one. You can go online or make a quick stop at the Box Office to buy tickets for yourself, your family, friends and loved ones for performances in the New Year. There’s bound to be something that appeals to everyone on your list – from South Asian sensation JoSH to the hilarious Late Nite Catechism 2: Sister Strikes Again! and the amazing string experience of Bowfire.

Michael Jackson and The Beatles fans will be thrilled to receive tickets to two of the best tribute shows of the year. Come celebrate the King of Pop at The Ultimate MJ Experience on January 16 and then, on January 17, relive the British Invasion at Fab 4 ever as we mark the 50th anniversary of The Beatles coming to North America.

And that’s just January! Whether it’s comedy or dance, rock or jazz, we’ve got it at the Rose Theatre in 2015!

Got Plans for New Year’s Eve?

Bundle up family and friends and head to Downtown Brampton. The entertainment gets under way at 7:00 pm with buskers, a street carnival, two live concert stages and much more. The main stage entertainment in Garden Square kicks off with The BeetRoots and The OBGMs, followed at 10pm by our headliner, Juno Award-winner for Group of the Year, Arkells. It promises to be a great way to ring in 2015!

In the News …

The Rose Theatre recently won First Place Platinum in The Brampton Guardian Readers’ Choice Awards for Live Entertainment and Theatre. It’s gratifying to know that the community values the Rose Theatre and its diverse programming. It’s not the first time we have won this award and the Arts and Culture Team is motivated to maintain our high standards and to continue to be #1 in our category!

Goodbye to 2014 and Thank You!

in 1995, a group of four young folk musicians from ireland found themselves looking out at a crowd of some 2,000 people from a stage in Brittany, northwest France. They were playing the Lorient Interceltic Festival, one of Europe’s largest gatherings of Celtic culture. And they were hideously underprepared. Though all were accomplished musicians, they usually played together informally and had quickly thrown together a lineup of songs for the festival. Even their name, Danú (a goddess in Irish mythology), had been hastily chosen when it dawned on them they should have an Irish name to compete under.

And yet, in the finest spirit of the Emerald Isle, where mercurial genius and flashes of charm beat out careful planning every time, somehow it all came together on the night. They won over the crowd and were invited back to the festival the following year, when they won the Best Band trophy.

Though even they didn’t realize it, a band called Danú had been born and, two decades later, it would still be going strong. Even after their win in France, it took several years before they started touring and figured out that somewhere along the line they had become a bona fide band. Until then, they’d seen themselves as a bunch of musicians meeting up and doing a few festivals now and again.

“It evolved, really, and I think most of the great bands happen that way, you know,” recalls Benny McCarthy, the band’s accordion player, speaking on the phone from Germany, where they were touring. “There was no strategic plan from the start; we were just going out there and having fun.”

Today, the band’s lineup has changed a bit and it is now a five-piece rather than a quartet, but its mission is the same: To bring their traditional music to the world and let new generations fall in love with the sounds of Ireland’s Celtic roots.

Danú will be doing that at the most magical time of the year in Ontario, when they perform at the Rose Theatre as part of their North American Christmas tour.

Called Féile Na Nollag (A Christmas Gathering), the concert will see Danú bring the spirit of the festive season from Ireland to The Rose with a mix of traditional Christmas tunes that might be performed by a band in a pub on a cold winter’s night.

“Christmas is probably the one time of the year when everyone is home. It’s about the gathering. It’s not about the gig, it’s about going down to your local pub to play with your neighbours. It’s the one time of the year when that kind of happens for every musician. It’s a great time to hear new tunes, it’s a great time for the dancing, for the fun,” says McCarthy.

The band hails from parts of Ireland including Donegal in the north and County Kerry in the west, regions where Irish is still spoken daily. For most of the band, Irish is their mother

tongue and they sing in that language as well as English. Throw in instruments including the tin whistle and the Irish bouzouki (a mandolin-like stringed instrument) and you get some sounds that will be unfamiliar to Canadian ears.

“A lot of our material would be unusual,” says McCarthy, “but for some of the tunes we invite the audience. We teach them the chorus and we encourage audience participation, because our performances are about that. It’s about making them feel relaxed and, okay, you can clap along and enjoy yourselves.”

McCarthy says the band will likely play a version of “Silent Night,” initially sung in Irish (“It just sounds nicer in Irish”) but finishing in English. “When the audience joins in it’s just a special moment,” he says. “It’s a great experience for us as well.”

The band composes their own music, but many of the songs they perform are traditional tunes that date back many generations. And though they are some of the best musicians in Ireland — they’ve played, for instance, on behalf of the Irish government in the EU’s capital, Brussels, and in India — they learn their songs the old-fashioned way. Eschewing printed music, they pick up their songs by ear, often needing to hear them only two or three times before getting them down.

“You learn from old musicians,” says McCarthy. “When you sit down and you learn from an old musician you get a lot more than just the music, you get phrasing and the character. That’s what tradition is about; passing stuff to your kids.”

He adds, “Somebody said music is not ours, it’s just passing through us.”Be sure to catch Danú as they pass through Brampton.

you know him as the originator of the Jean valjean and Phantom roles of the long-running Broadway hits Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera, respectively.

however, colm wilkinson’s theatre pedigree dates back much further than those two iconic roles, going back to his native ireland and his portrayal of Judas iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar.

he was so well-liked by composer andrew lloyd webber and lyricist tim rice – who wrote both Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – that they cast him in their 1976 musical Evita as the original che, the role based on che Guevara, the marxist argentine-cuban revolutionary.

whereas Jesus Christ Superstar was very melody-driven, catchy and somewhat straightforward, Evita was more convoluted, turning out to be some of the toughest music wilkinson ever had to sing.

“‘i’m not a fast music reader,” wilkinson, 70, admitted recently from his toronto home. “i’ll sight-read, and grab a guitar and pick out notes, but in this case i saw a page of music in front of me that was handwritten – and it looked like somebody had dipped their hand into a bowl of ink and just flicked it onto the page. it was just all over the place – jumping octaves and just no regard for the human voice to a certain degree.

“and i said (to musical director anthony bowles), ‘that’s impossible to sing!’ and he replied, ‘you must! it’s written!’”

the irish singer and actor said his part in Evita – the story of argentina’s beloved eva peron, the second wife of argentina president Juan peron – was so complicated they had to alter it significantly for future role players.

“i did the original album of Evita,” wilkinson recalls. “i sang the part of che and, oh my god, that was something else. i don’t know if andrew was always trying to be different, but tim came up with the idea of Evita and doing a musical on eva peron. it was totally different musically than Superstar. i thought it was very adventurous of him … and very difficult to sing. they changed it after the album we did because a lot of the guys who played che afterwards could not cope with that kind of music and the range that it was in – it was crazy.”

the Dublin-born wilkinson, who started musically with “rock ’n’ roll and blues” and “… been on the road since i was 15,” says he sort of fell into the genre of musical theatre.

“my mother was in amateur dramatics and my sister is an actress, so there’s a lot of music in our family and i sort of gravitated towards it,” says wilkinson. “i’m not saying i found it easy, but i found it familiar territory. to get into a role and starting singing, for me seemed to be a natural progression. i went to some acting schools for a couple of weeks – i went to the royal academy

of Dramatic art in london, but i was too busy working.”

and work, it turns out, was one of the main motivators for wilkinson favouring musical theatre.

“what appealed to me was steady work,” wilkinson admits. “it can be monotonous, but i had a family to support, so i stayed with ‘Superstar’ for three years. if you’re working good material, like Les Misérables, it’s easy to stay long in these shows. but when you’re working not so good material, it gets tougher.”

the veteran of 1,700 Phantom of the Opera performances over a four year span in toronto and thousands more in Les Misérables says he’s pretty much done with that life for now.

“at my age, do i want to go in and do six, seven, eight shows a week?” wilkinson asks rhetorically. “no. they asked me to come in and do the bishop in Les Misérables here (during a recent toronto run) and i said, no, i’m not interested. i sang it in the movie (starring hugh Jackman) and did a thing for charity for the prince of wales, and i’ll probably do it again for charity.

“but it’s pretty arduous. is there a role out there? i think on and off about doing Man of La Mancha but, at this stage, i prefer to be doing my singing shows.”

Broadway, Christmas and Beyond is the show wilkinson is currently touring.

“it’s a huge mix of different kinds of music, but mainly broadway because that’s my profile.

“i like to mix it up a bit, so there will be ‘folsom prison blues,’ some country stuff in there, one or two beatles’ things and some irish – ‘Danny boy.’ it’s just a mix of different kinds of music that i have found – in doing these concerts for a long time now – people identify with and enjoy.

“it’s about audience participation – people clapping their hands and singing along, and that’s what it’s always been about. and i love to hear people sing. it’s a very irish sort of party ceilidh vibe.”

and when he’s not on the road, he’s spending time with his family and travelling.

“i went to italy last year for the first time – i played there before, but this was just to sit down and have a holiday, and i loved it,” wilkinson says. “i love new Zealand, and to just have time out with my family and my wife, that’s what i want to do – stop and smell the roses.”

“Being onstage singing is the best,” says jazz singer Matt Dusk.

this December, Dusk will take you on a journey embracing the styles of the past. with his incredible voice, he will perform the unforgettable compositions of George and ira Gershwin, sammy cahn and Jule styne, Johnny mercer, harold arlen and many more. Dusk welcomes the opportunity to share his love of music with audiences and the music he has selected is sure to stir up feelings about the special people in your life. “we’re all here to have a great time, so i try to build a show around that premise.”

the toronto native became passionate about jazz as a teenager. “my parents enrolled me in st. michael’s choir school to pursue my musical interests.” it was performing in a talent night at an all-girls school that gave him a taste of the show-business life. “after my performance the girls went nuts! i said, I don’t care what I’m singing, I love this!”

to further his music education, he studied at york University. one guest professor, legendary musician oscar peterson, left him with lasting advice. “persevere because you love it, not because you want to make money. it takes dedication, hard work and focus to make it.” throughout his career, Dusk has taken peterson’s wise words to heart and

has been rewarded in kind. in 2004, he was invited to las Vegas to perform as the in-house entertainer throughout the filming of the fox tV reality show The Casino. “being on The Casino was a very big break. having close to ten million people in north america watching you weekly was an amazing opportunity.”

Dusk promises that the rose theatre show will include many “up-tempo, exciting moments; something’s always changing to grab the audience’s attention. i play music for the people. i put myself in their seat and ask myself what i would want to listen to.”

audiences will be treated to selections from each of his five full-length studio albums: his gold-certified debut, Two Shots (2004); Peace on Earth (2004); Back in Town (2006); Good News (2009); and My Funny Valentine: The Chet Baker Songbook (2013).

Dusk is especially excited to sing selections from My Funny Valentine, which he co-produced with terry sawchuk and shelly berger. “i chose songs based on the memories i had of chet baker’s performances and what sounded authentic with my voice. it took me six months to choose the songs for the album. i would only record songs i knew chet had either recorded or performed.”

wIth matt dusk

Page 15: December 2014 Odeum Magazine

15BOX OFFICE 905.874.2800 rosetheatre.ca

his first exposure to chet baker’s “haunting voice and carefree approach,” as he puts it, was on the radio when he was a teenager. “my parents would listen to classical music on the radio. at 10 pm, the jazz programming would begin.” the 16-year-old was glued to the radio.

on the 12-song collection, Dusk is accompanied by an 80-piece orchestra. special guests on the album include Grammy award-winning trumpet player arturo sandoval on the title track, chanteuse emilie-claire barlow in the duet “embraceable you” and jazz great Guido basso playing the flugelhorn on the haunting “someone to watch over me.” his duet “i fall in love too easily” features straight no chaser alum, ryan ahlwardt. a special moment when putting the pieces together for this album was featuring Dusk’s grandfather’s l962 oldsmobile 88 for the cD jacket artwork.

it was a great honour for the humble and down-to-earth performer when, in December 2013, My Funny Valentine: The Chet Baker Songbook achieved platinum status in poland.

the self-confessed workaholic puts endless hours into preparation for the job he loves doing. recently, he put in 196 hours of rehearsal time for a 13-minute nashville showcase!

so what does he do when he finds some time to unwind? in the summertime Dusk can be found sailing and in the colder months, he enjoys bowling. even on tour, he relaxes by playing a game or two at a local bowling alley.

“i do what i love! i have no regrets; i live life to the fullest!”

As 2014 ends, we fondly reflect on the incredible hard work of our Brampton Theatre Volunteers over the year. Without their dedication, enthusiasm and incredible customer service skills, our theatres could not have achieved the level of success experienced. We wish to thank each and every one of our valued volunteers and express how much we look forward to working with them in 2015.

Message from Gaye:

After eight years of big dreams, hard work and many achievements, it is time for me to announce my retirement from the City of Brampton. I say goodbye to you all with mixed feelings. I have enjoyed the opportunity to get to know many patrons and your

dedication, loyalty and generosity to the theatre have been truly an inspiration to me. There has

been a great deal learned and I can truly say moments here were the best part of my career thus far.

Our sponsors, donors and advertisers are individuals who live and work in our

communities. They are also the faces of local corporations, community groups and

service clubs. In essence, the value of this group of people and their commitment to the

theatre cannot be overstated. To all of you who have supported and continue to support the

theatre, I can only say thank you for making my time here a truly enjoyable one.
