    Language Arts

Students have been writing narratives about journeys they have taken. Some students wrote about

traveling around the world while others wrote about day trips from Bangkok. All in all, the stories

were fun and interesting. Next quarter we will focus on persuasive writing. During the last two

weeks in January, DRAs will be conducted for the second time this year. The best way to get

ready for them is to read over the break.

    Mathematics

Students have been immersed with division this past month: long division and dividing with

decimals. Continue to review basic multiplication and division facts over the break. When we

return, we review these concepts as we use basic algebraic equations. After that, we will start

    studying fractions.

    Social Studies

We have been studying the five themes of geography and then applying that as each student

learns more about his or her chosen country. We will begin working on the country reports in

January. We have also been learning mapping skills. If you are going on a trip this holiday

season, look at a map of where you are traveling with your child.

Congratulations to all the winners for the handwriting contest on the topic about

our King. All prizes were posted at the E.S. breezeway. The certificates will begiven to all the winners after the Christmas break. During the break please

encourage your child to read something fun in Thai. Merry Christmas and Happy

    New Year!

    Science Laboratory

This month, students have been learning about saturation, as they continue to study properties ofmixtures and solutions. Students had the opportunity to saturate solutions with different solutes,

and observe how they were different. Next month, students will explore the concept of

concentration, as they further extend their understanding.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas Everyone.

December see our kids learning about the spirit of Christmas. If you haven't yet read Charles Dickens'

"A Christmas Carol", then I recommend you do so this holiday season. Sometimes this story appears in

collections of ghosts stories, but it's really a story about the spirit of Christmas. If you're travelling, make

sure you have some good books with you to while away the time. And every time you visit a new place,

buy a special book to remember it by.

    The gift of two languages

Knowing two languages is a gift you can give your child. Many children losthe ability to read in Thai when going to school in English. Withencouragement from you, though, your child can become fluent in not justone language, but two!

Last month, I listed some online activities for Subject-verb agreement andconjunctions. Here are some more advanced level activities for studentsthat need more of a challenge.

    Music

A Joyous Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

We have just finished Unit 3: Vocal Music and the students improved their

singing skill and became more confident and independent on singing songs

with harmony. I took a video of their singing performances and what a

rewarding experience for the Grade 5 students to watch and evaluate their

    own singing performances.
