The FIP has been designed to complement theoretical knowledge and skills taught in the classroom by providing opportunities for students to apply basic CD concepts, principles, approaches, strategies and techniques on real-life situations in rural and urban settings, particularly in the areas of planning, research, education/training and organizing.

The FIP has been designed to be the DCD’s vehicle for LEARNING and SERVICE.

1. Relate theory to practice and evolve theory from practice;2. Develop a critical awareness from an exposure to existing economic, political and socio-cultural realities;3. Integrate and identify with the people being served;4. Acquire/refine appropriate skills and techniques from community development work; and5. Develop/enhance a commitment to the creation of a just society

CD 180: Field practice for developing BASIC SKILLS IN CO

• ability to identify basis (es) of planned intervention being implemented in the area through integration, research and community study

• familiarity with the whole concept & methods employed in community organizing

• ability to integrate and enjoin community participation in community development work

• ability to critically assess development programs in the community

• skills in documenting the entire fieldwork experience in the community

CD 181: Field practice for developing SPECIALIZED SKILLS in CO

• ability to make a critique and come up with concrete recommendations with regards to the implementation of the partner agency’s program/projects

• ability to conceptualize a program of action or a development intervention in the community within the framework of people’s empowerment

• ability to facilitate development of people’s knowledge and skills in planning and implementing short-term projects feasible within the semester (e.g. leadership trainings, IGPs, etc.)

Objectives of Supervision

1. Provide immediate guidance to the students and direction to their work

2. Learn from the students’ and faculty supervisor’s experiences in development work

3. Facilitate periodic reflections on their individual and collective activities

4. Help the students in evaluating the relevance and applicability of organizing concepts and principles learned in the classroom and synthesize these experiences into lessons and insights

Roles and Responsibilities of Supervisors

1. develops plan of action for the semester together with students and partner agency

2. regularly visits the field site and holds field instruction meetings to discuss learning goals, how fieldwork experiences can be maximized, knowledge and skills gained, problems encountered, etc.

3. conducts psycho-social processing to the students to enhance/hasten fulfillment of learning goals

4. attends meetings, conferences, study sessions, community activities with the students

5. reads and comments on students’ field diary, logbook and reports

6. assists students in developing projects, researches, papers, trainings, training aids that are useful to the community

8. synthesizes with the students the latter’s entire fieldwork experience

9. evaluates and gives the final grade of the students in consultation with agency and other teammates

We should seek to be treated as a regular members of the family

We should seek to help rather than be a burden to our host family. In particular: Do not demand for special food,

unless there are dietary restrictions

Conduct & Behavior in the Field

Among the people we work with in the field area:

Be punctual and prepare for set meetings and activities to be conducted within or outside the field area.

Ensure people’s participation in making decisions that will be affecting them.

Avoid making any promises, even hints of providing solutions with regards to expressed needs. These would only create false hopes, instead, always give emphasis on what can be achieved by the people’s organized and collective action.

Conduct & Behavior in the Field

Among Students:

Students should consciously show that they are cooperating with one another. If misunderstanding occurs, students should work it out within their group.

No overt demonstration of affection

Ensure regular reflection sessions or self and peer evaluation sessions, especially when conflicts within the team/area arise.

Parental and Social Visits

Parental and social visits need to be pre-arranged with the faculty and agency supervisors. Prior consent will have to be sought. Such visits must also not distract students from their FW responsibilities. The concerned student has the responsibility to orient/brief his/her visitors on the proper code of behaviour while in the community.

Unplanned visits by boy/girlfriends are strictly prohibited.

Fieldwork RequirementsRequired number of hours

• Students are required to spend a minimum of 750 hours in the fieldwork area for a 9-unit course, 500 for a 6-unit course, and 250 for a 3-unit course

• For field-based classes and sharing sessions in Diliman, students are required to spend a minimum of 48 hours

• Absences equivalent to 20% of the minimum # of hours required in both instances shall be basis for dropping

• Students are encouraged to take a one-day rest. However, it should not coincide with activities in the fieldwork area. Students taking a day-off must have the approval of the faculty or agency supervisor or agency representative in the fieldwork area.

Students are not simply “trained” but find fulfillment in being able to witness and accompany people’s struggles and achievements. For many students, their fieldwork experience served as a turning point – a defining moment – for deciding to pursue CD not just as a career but also as a profession of committed service (LP dela Cruz 2004).

The fieldwork instruction program of DCD-CSWCD is being carried out in partnership with a partner development agency – (Government, LGU, NGO, PO)

Shares the vision and perspective of the College;

Willingness to cooperate with the College in developing and implementing the Field Instruction Program through strategic partnerships

Currently undertaking a community-based or sector-based programs/ projects with an organizing component;

Criteria for Considering Field Partner

Availability of a capable agency supervisor to assist the students in accomplishing their learning objectives;

Preferably willing to accommodate at least three (3) undergraduate or two (2) graduate students for field placement;

Willing to send representatives to Field Instruction Program meetings;

providing a faculty supervisor for the field team who shall facilitate the learning process of students in their practice of community development work in coordination with the agency supervisor;pagtatalaga ng gurong taga-gabay (faculty supervisor) na magtitiyak ng pagkatuto at pagsasamapamuhay ng Community Development ng mga field work students sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa agency supervisor

 

Terms of Partnership sa Pagitan ng DCD-CSWCD at Partner Agency

providing development services upon the request of the partner agency for effectively and efficiently implementing development programs and initiatives; pagbibigay ng mga pagsasanay o iba pang mga serbisyo na hihilingin ng kabalikat na ahensya para sa mahusay na pagpapatupad nito ng mga programa; at Gawain;

plan a program of activities that will meet the learning goals and needs of students within a community setting;magbalangkas ng planong tutugon sa layuning matuto at makapaglingkod ng mga mag-aaral at naayon sa kalagayan ng pamayanan

Ang Katuwang na Ahensya

• provide the following financial and/or logistical support to every student for the duration of the fieldwork; (subject to negotiation) :maglaan ng pangpinansya o katumbas na mga sumusunod na pangangailangan ng mga mag-aaral (pwedeng pag-usapan pa)

 board and lodging or housing arrangement within the community that is safe and secure and will provide students easy access to all activities of the community; matitirhan sa loob ng pamayanan na ligtas at may katiyakan ng kapakanan ng mga mag-aaral at magiging madali para sa kanila na makilahok sa mga Gawain ng pamayanan;

•reimbursement of transportation and operational expenses to be incurred by the students related to their field work activities;
