All Bob Hope had to do was don a silly costume, open his mouth—and he’d have a roomful of people laughing hysterically. That power made him such a beloved force during the holiday season, proving that you don’t need all the pomp and circumstance of a big to-do to create a lifelong memory.

Some of my fondest memories of holidays past are those little moments—wrapping gifts with the anticipation of knowing how excit-ed my grandchildren will be on Christmas morning, cooking breakfast for the family in the weeks leading up to the real festivities and sifting through the decorations the day after Thanksgiving.

Our annual Holiday Issue introduces you to a handful of Miami Valley residents who were kind enough to open their doors and share their family traditions. We’ve also cooked up a few mouth-watering des-sert recipes that are Housetrends-approved and we’re offering a few tips and ideas to spruce up your dining table for your first holiday soiree.

If you have a holiday tradition that you would like to share with us, send us a photo or drop us a line at [email protected] or [email protected]. We might publish it on our website, Housetrends.com and on our Housetrends Dayton Facebook page.

This is the last issue of 2012, thank you to all the homeowners, clients and readers for a great year! See you in 2013!

From our family to yours, Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Evelyn Yaus and the Housetrends staff

Miami Valley designer opens the doors to her holiday havenBy Alison Bour | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

Area stores have been tempting shoppers with holiday decorations since early October. It is so easy to fall in love with a new decoration that would be perfect for your home. v But one Miami Valley designer says that when it comes to holiday decorat-ing, people often forget to consider what’s in their back yards and already on display in their homes. “It doesn’t have to be tradi-tional ornaments and rib-bons,” says Jackie Hutton, owner of Library of Design in Centerville. “You can accent what you already have, like a favorite glass bowl, or napkins you use year ‘round.”

Colorful inspirationJackie uses her own home décor to guide her holiday decorating, which she begins just after Thanksgiving—an approach she also uses with clients.

Her Oakwood home is filled with hues of plum, brown, terracotta and burgundy. Her holiday décor works within these foundational colors, which can be seen on the Christmas trees scattered throughout the house, above the archways, on her dining table and on other surfaces.

Natural green sprays are hung over archways and groupings of white poinsettias sit in the fireplaces. Wrapped packages in complementary colors peek out of an urn placed next to the fireplace in the living room. Wired ribbon allows Jackie to create festive center-pieces for fireplace mantels and other decorative pieces. She also uses mirrors to reflect items, such as the well-placed bowl of fresh flowers on the table in the breakfast area.

The holiday décor in this living room complements the muted green, brown and burgundy color scheme. TOP RIGHT: The family room boasts two fully decorated trees that showcase an abundance of color. BOTTOM RIGHT: An arrangement of fresh flowers and candles make a simple statement in this breakfast area. OPENING SPREAD: Glassware with elegant red stems tie in perfectly with the silk trim accenting the plum napkins. A large centerpiece, filled with fresh greenery, sits proud on the dining table.

Find a theme:: Create themed trees. Use your

trees to highlight kids’ art projects, a specific color, or orna-

ments that evoke memories of holidays over the years.

Photo-worthy: To better see what you’ve

done, step back and take a picture of each room or deco-

rated area. It will help you decide what’s too much, what’s

not enough and what works within your individual home.

Be daring: Don’t be afraid to use non-traditional

colors that match your rooms, including muted greens,

rust or purple. Consider adding silver to your holiday

decorating collection—it’s making a big comeback.

Outdoor décor: Even if you like over-the-top

holiday decorating inside, consider a more demure exte-

rior look—simple white lights and splashes of color.

Red stemware she uses all year is instantly transformed into a holiday table theme when accented with a table runner, orna-ments and a centerpiece with evergreens and flashes of natural materials.

Jackie says holiday get-togethers need not be surrounded by traditional red and bright green decorations. “I like more muted colors because they tie in with the existing color palette,” she explains. “As long as it pulls together, it doesn’t matter which colors you use.”

Natural decorationsJackie also looks to the great outdoors for decorating inspiration. “You can get just about anything in your own back yard and spray

Tips of the Trade: Break out of the holiday decorating mold

it,” she says about the wise use of resources such as evergreens, leaves, pinecones and other natural elements.

This approach to holiday décor is found in her dining table centerpiece, in a pinecone wreath placed in a window overlooking the kitchen and along her fireplace mantels, which are filled with gold, green and rust-painted leaves and evergreens that accent her furniture.

ABOVE: This tree is overflowing with colorful ornaments, ribbon, greenery, feathers, fruit and other accouterments. OPPOSITE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: A pinecone wreath adds a natural touch to the kitchen window; Even small spaces, such as this sitting room, get in on the holiday action; Holiday stockings add a touch of whimsy to the fireplace in the game room.

26 housetrends.com

Consider personal styleJackie considers her holiday decorating approach traditional and just a bit over the top. But she also has clients who prefer a clean, classy look. For this, she recom-mends skipping the ribbon and sprays, but adding just a few touches to bowls and surfaces.

In general, she says traditional holi-day decorating is the norm in Dayton, although she does have plenty of contem-porary décor lovers as clients.

Some rooms in her house are lightly touched-up for the holidays, while guests won’t find any open spaces between orna-ments and ribbon on her trees. “I look around and see areas that need some-thing,” she says. “But leave some surfaces clean even if you love an over-the-top look.”

Jackie also adds to her collection of hol-iday décor each year, and takes out what is old and tired. “Even though it might be difficult, don’t be afraid to weed out items that just don’t fit. The holidays are a time to let your personality shine. ”

¼ teaspoon ground allspice ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom ¼ teaspoon ground cloves ¼ teaspoon baking soda 1¼ cups sugar1 stick unsalted butter 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon dark rum ¾ cup chopped pecans ¾ cup chopped walnuts Powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 300°F. Butter and flour two 8x4-inch loaf pans. Combine 1 cup flour, all spices and baking soda in bowl. Using heavy-duty mixer or electric mixer, cream sugar and butter in another bowl. Add eggs and rum and blend well. Add flour mixture and beat until smooth. Add undrained fruit and nuts to batter and mix well with wooden spoon. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, about 1¾ hours. Cool in pans on rack. Dust cake with powdered sugar before serving.

FRUIT CAKEFor Fruit: 1⅓ cups raisins 1 cup coarsely chopped dried apple slices ¾ cup dried tart cherries ⅔ cup dried cranberries ⅔ cup diced dried pears ⅔ cup diced dried apricots ½ cup sugar ⅓ cup dark rum 1½ cups boiling water

Combine all fruit in large bowl. Add sugar and stir to coat fruit well. Blend in rum. Add enough boiling water to almost cover fruit. Let stand at room temperature until fruit is plump, at least 2 hours or overnight.

For Cake: Butter for pans Flour for pans 1 cup all purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground mace

Tip: Fruit Cake can be prepared up to 1 month ahead. Wrap in plastic and store in cool dry place.

CANDY CANE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING4 sticks salted butter, room temperature1 teaspoon vanilla3 tablespoons milk1 2 lb bag of powdered sugar (10x sifted)5 candy canes, crushed

Whip butter on medium until creamed. Turn mixer down to low and add milk, vanilla and about ½ cup of powdered sugar to make a runny paste-like consis-tency. Add the rest of the sugar about 1 cup at a time on low to medium-low setting. Once all of the sugar is incorpo-rated, add the crushed candy canes. Turn mixer to medium-high or high and let it whip for about 3-5 minutes.

Tip: You can use your whisk or paddle attachment. The whisk will make a fluffy frosting, while the paddle will give it a firmer consistency.

RASpBERRY CREAM ChEESE TART1 package, 3 ounces cream cheese1 stick butter1 cup flour1 tablespoon sugarPinch of salt1 16 ounce jar raspberry

preserves with seeds

Mix cream cheese, butter, flour, sugar and salt in a food processor until well blended. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Thumb shape into 6 individual tart pans and fill half way with raspberry preserves. Anticipating Homearama ®

2013Auteur Estates is the site of next year’s Homearama® Luxury Edition. The inviting, cul-de-sac community, located off State Route 48 in Clearcreek Township, is com-prised of 31 estate-sized lots ranging from 1.25 to over 5 acres.

“The community offers a very private setting for its residents,” says David Klass, developer of Auteur Estates. “Many of the lots are wooded and the entire develop-ment is surrounded by 70 acres of pro-tected ground.”

Construction is already underway on one of the show homes—a $3,000,000-plus home from Artisan Estate Homes, LLC. “This home will be over 10,000 square feet and is out of this world,” says Klass. “It will feature the newest trends in architecture, design and technology. Artisan is going all-out for this house.”

Homearama®’s Luxury Edition is sched-uled for September 2013.

A cluster of historic homes to the east of Dayton’s city center may seem non-existent to the outside world, except for a couple of days every other Christmas when they come to life in their own Victorian fashion.

For three straight days in December, nearly 1,000 visitors descend upon St. Anne’s Hill Historic District to experience Christmas in a way that today only appears on vintage post cards and classic movies. It’s the neighbor-hood’s Dickens Of a Christmas Tour, which transports those in the 21st century back to a time when the most beloved holiday of the year meant sleigh rides and singing around a piano.

The two-hour tour allows homeowners to showcase their historic homes, many of which have been restored to their original beauty and charm, and enables visitors to see a more peaceful side of city living. Visitors walked through eight homes and one art gallery for the 2011 tour and were guided by residents dressed in full Victorian attire as they roamed from home to home. And while the neighborhood may have drawn visitors back to the late 1800s, the feeling quickly changed once they stepped inside the homes.

“There are a lot of people who wonder how we can live in older houses,” says Susan Gray, president of the St. Anne’s Hill Historical Society and chairman of the tour. “This allows us to show people that it is doable, and incredibly enjoyable. There are a number of people who come on the tour and decide that they want to move here.”

Among the tour’s 2011 offerings were three cottages nestled next to one another along St. Anne’s Henry Street. Each of these homes shares one important thing in common—they were all rescued and restored by Glenna Rogers, a Daytonian with a heart for historic preservation.

Unearthing a gemAt 39 Henry Street sits a cottage that has a big story to tell. The home fell into horrible neglect over the years and was nearly buried alive with Wisteria vines and layers of old shingles by the time Rogers got to it. The home’s back yard seemed more reminiscent of the Wild West than the Victorian design with which it had been created.

“My favorite story to tell visitors as they walked through for the tour, was that a back hoe that had been brought in to clear debris in the back yard found a car buried underneath five feet of weeds,” says owner Gil Sherrit.

Gil and her mother, Dorothy Wefler, moved into the home the summer before the tour, after being away from Dayton for nearly two decades. The two-bedroom, two-bath house is now alive with character and antique charm. Gil and her mom, who most recently lived in North Carolina, incorporated their love for nature into everything, including their holiday décor.

Warm greenery and white lights were incor-porated among pine cones, feathers and sea shells—all things that were personally picked while Gil and Dorothy enjoyed walks along the beach or on the trails down south. Gil’s various collections—including 10 vintage snow globes and 20 German sheep—created points of interest among soft green moss and candles.

“People who came through here talked about how it had a sense of peacefulness and serenity,” she says. “I like homes to feel serene when you are coming back from a crazed day and you want to feel relaxed.”

Postcards from the pastA few doors down from Gil’s home resides another bungalow built in 1885 by German immigrant and stone mason Henry Horn. Though small, the three-room cottage was home to Horn, his wife and son for three decades. Today Mary Jo Dupree enjoys the beautifully restored residence, which now has six rooms including a new kitchen.

Dupree decided to use the home’s lim-ited space to her advantage by creating a theme for each room. The themes were played out in small Christmas trees, each decorated in a different way. The tree in the dining room boasted big twigs, berries and blue fabric draped around it. The tree sitting in front of the living room fire-place was more organic with pine cones, nature-themed ornaments and antique post cards.

Dupree captured a love for antiques from her parents and now goes to shows all year long. Those approaching her home’s porch could see this right away. An antique table adorned with greenery held a large chalkboard that greeted visitors with “Merry Christmas.”

Many of her antique finds were nestled in her Christmas decorations including her incredible collection of 50 vintage post cards that were displayed on the living room tree. Each card tells a story with the original sender’s own unique handwriting. It was this touch that captivated most visi-tors passing through Dupree’s home on the tour. “People would actually just stop and read the postcards,” she says. “I would come back to the room after they left and realize I needed to rearrange the cards they had taken off.”

Dupree says the tour was an exciting time to watch people discover her neigh-borhood and realize that so much history still surrounds downtown Dayton.

Reconnecting with family heirloomsEric and Carolyn Aielli live in the third cottage on Henry Street. The original four-room house was built in the 1860s and underwent numerous additions since then. Today, it boasts a master bedroom and a two-car, two-story garage thanks to the work of Rogers.

The 2011 tour marked the first Christmas the couple would celebrate in their St. Anne’s home, and being a part of the event was bittersweet for Carolyn, who had lost her sister earlier that year. “My sister loved this neighborhood and we decided this is something she would want us to do,” Carolyn says. “This gave us the opportunity to keep busy and to decorate.”

The couple didn’t have to look far for the extra decorations they needed. Eric’s grandmother, who had passed away in 2006, had loved Christmas. Many of her excursions were centered around shop-ping for Christmas decorations and she even kept one room in her home adorned for the season year ‘round.

The Aiellis took the decorations out of storage, packed a station wagon to capac-ity and moved them to their Henry Street home. A packed Lionel train set took Eric back to his childhood in the mid-1970s. The set, which was originally his father’s, was one of the first things he and his wife incorporated into their holiday design.

Still, the Aiellis soon realized that the process of preparing for the tour wasn’t nearly as rewarding as being a part of it.

“It was so fun to see everyone’s reac-tions,” Carolyn says. “It was professionally done and all the neighbors worked so hard to pull it together.”

The thrill that newcomers like the Aiellis feel is no different than that experienced by the veterans. John See has been involved with the tour in one way or another since the mid 1990s and still loves getting into character and taking in the ambience. He’s more often than not found wearing a vin-tage English bobby hat and running from home to home, like Paul Revere announc-ing to the next group of homeowners that the visitors are on their way.

The tour includes different homes each

year, but one tradition remains. Visitors end their night at the grand Bossler Mansion, which was restored to its origi-nal state in the 1980s, to socialize and enjoy a dessert of bread pudding. For people like See, there’s no better way to usher in the holidays or celebrate the growing rebirth of his neighborhood. The success of this biannual tour proves that others agree.
