The Christian Apostles were Jewish men chosen from among the disciples, who were "sent forth" by Jesus to preach the Gospel to both Jews and Gentiles, across the world.

(Greek word "απόστολος" apostolos= 'one who is sent forth as a messenger')

"He called unto him his disciples, and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles." — Luke 6:13

What is a creed?

Analogies to help us understand…

1)Exams –

Creed = Summary of chapter.

2) Baptism –

Creed = Summary of essential elements of the Church’s faith.

The Creeds

Page 11: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

CCC 186This synthesis of faith …… what was of the greatest importance was gathered from all the Scriptures, … mustard seed contains a great number of branches in a tiny grain, … this summary of faith encompassed… the whole knowledge of the true religion contained in the Old and New Testaments.

The Creeds

11

Page 12: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

CCC 187 … called "professions of faith“… summarize the faith that Christians profess. … called "creeds" on account of what is usually their first word in Latin:

credo ("I believe").

The Creeds

12

Page 13: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

The Development of the Creeds

† After Jesus ascended into heaven, the deposit of faith was left in the hands of the apostles to be handed on to other believers.

† The Deposit of Faith is the body of saving truth or the entirety of Jesus Christ's revelation entrusted by Him to the Apostles and handed on by them to be preserved and proclaimed.

13

Page 14: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

The Development of the Creeds

† In the Church’s beginning, the apostles would summarize the saving events of Jesus’ life, often in short, skeletal sermon summaries of the gospel that came to be known as the "rule of faith”.

14

Page 15: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

The Development of the Creeds

† As Christianity spread, this “rule of faith” or standard of teaching ensured that the preaching and teaching being heard was an authentic expression of the deposit of faith.

† Also, the need was felt to have summaries of Christian beliefs to be "confessed" or professed by Converts or the Faithful.

15

Page 16: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

The Development of the Creeds

† Soon, the deposit of faith was expressed in a collection of short formula expressions called a creed.

† The word “CREED” comes from the Latin word “Credo” which means “I believe”

†The faith could be easily committed to memory and passed on orally to the next generation.

16

Page 17: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

The Creeds

† There were various creeds that emerged and developed over time.

† As the Church faced misunderstandings, dissensions and threats, it became necessary to respond with ever-clearer teaching.

† The creeds help to clarify orthodox teaching and combat against heresies or “false gospels”.

17

Page 18: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

The Creeds

† The creeds express in a summarized way, the truths of the faith.

† The two well known creeds are

1. The Apostles’ Creed

2. The Nicene Creed

18

Page 19: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

The Apostles’ Creed

† The Apostles' Creed

- considered to be a faithful summary of the apostles’ faith.

- is based upon the most ancient formula used by the Roman Catholic Church. We find it in various forms dating back to the 200s.

19

Page 20: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

The Apostles’ Creed

† The Apostles' Creed

- The name of the Creed comes from the probably fifth-century legend that, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit after Pentecost, each of the Twelve Apostles dictated part of it.

- traditionally divided into twelve (12) articles, thus symbolizing the fullness of the apostolic faith by the number of the apostles (12).

20

The Nicene Creed

† The Nicene Creed

- is significantly longer than the Apostles’ creed and more detailed.

- professed during mass after the homily.

- is based upon the faith expressed at the first two ecumenical councils of the Church: the fourth-century Councils of Nicaea (325) and Constantinople (381).

26

29

Page 30: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

† A creed is not the totality of Christian faith.

† It is a summary that stands for everything that is taught by the Catholic Church.

† A creed is a symbol of something larger and, ultimately, of Someone.

† The CCC, #170 says that our faith does not rest ultimately in formulas, but in the realities expressed by those formulas, which faith allows us to touch.

† Our object is not a proposition, but a Person.

The Creeds

30

Page 31: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

The Apostles’ Creed

† The Creed is used at Baptism, as a declaration of faith.

31

Page 32: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

Rite of Baptism An interrogative form of the Apostles' Creed is used in the Rite of Baptism (for both children and adults). The minister of baptism asks the following questions (ICEL, 1974): •Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth?

•Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?

32

Page 33: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

• Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?

To each question, the catechumen, or, in the case of an infant, the parents and sponsor(s) (godparent(s)) in his or her place, answers "I do."

33

Page 34: Day of Prayer - The apostles' Creed

Then the celebrant says:

This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And all respond: Amen

34

The Apostles’ Creed

Baptised Catholics professed it at Mass.
