His Life

• 1937:David Hockney was born on July 9th, in Bradford, England, to Laura and Kenneth Hockney. (As a young child, Hockney also developed an obsession with opera.)

• 1948: David Hockney won a scholarship to the Bradford Grammar School, one of the best schools in the country. (This was where he decided he wanted to be an artist.)

• 1950: David asked to be transferred to the Regional College of Art in Bradford so that he could concentrate on art properly.

• 1953: Hockney finally enrolled in the College of Art and began painting with oils.

• 1957: David Hockney took the National Diploma in Design Examination.

• 1959: He enrolled in the Painting School of the Royal College in London

• 1961: Hockney travelled to New York for the first time.

• 1963: He lived in New York for a year.

• 1964: He moved to Santa Monica and was offered to teach at the university of Lowa

• 1966: David Hockney met Peter Schlesinger.

• 1967: David toured Europe with Schlesinger.

• 1971: Peter and David split up

• 1983: Hockney starts painting self portraits

Here David Hockney has used bits of different pictures to make his, which I think creates a very powerful effect.

In many of these pictures he has painted two people, almost like couples. We noticed that they all look different ages, are from different eras and maybe from different countries.

His Work (drawings)

Lots of David Hockney’s drawings are line drawings, although some are coloured and shaded. They are mainly drawn lightly in pencil, not really complicated drawings.

This one was drawn in charcoal.

My views

• I think David Hockney is a good artist, though I don’t like some of his pictures.

• I particularly liked his photography, because he made really powerful collages, and his landscape paintings looked really jolly and colourful.

• Though he doesn’t put much detail in the peoples faces, you can really see how they’re feeling.
