JUNE 1 “Sometimes when you play together as long as we have, things aren’t so easy,” Dave Matthews said during the intimate album release show for his band’s über-hyped sev- enth studio effort, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. “But I gotta say,” he went on, “that at the moment, this band is gettin’ on as good as we ever have.” A show has rarely gone by that Dave Matthews hasn’t mentioned his fallen bandmate LeRoi Moore since the group’s co-founder died unexpectedly last August—and this night was no exception: “Our good friend LeRoi Moore, before he passed away, he started to see the light that shone out of him,” Matthews explained. “And he started shining on us, and it made us all feel what we got.” The group’s three-hour set included a number of tracks from its latest album, kicking-off with the single, “Funny the Way It Is.” Of the seven new tunes that the band played, the New Orleans-inspired romp “Alligator Pie” and the arena- sized, ominous “Squirm” were also standouts. However, the classics owned the night. Jeff Coffin’s flute highlighted “The Dreaming Tree.” Drummer Carter Beauford reeled Coffin in for a “#41” showdown. An extended “Ants Marching” jam had violinist Boyd Tinsley at Beauford’s mercy and the drummer’s “Two Step” solo even enthralled the security guards. Despite battling a cold, vocally Matthews managed to eek out a solo Pete Seeger cover, “Rye Whiskey,” during the three-song encore. Exhausted, he expressed his gratitude: “We wanna thank you all for lettin’ us do what we love doin’ and hangin’ with us until we found out how we do it again.” Matt Franciscovich For up-to-the-minute reviews and news, please go to www.jambands.com The Dave Matthews Band keeping it intimate on the eve of release for its seventh studio album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King Matthews: “This band is gettin’ on as good as we ever have.”
