THE OLYMPIC TRUCE

“Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”

These beautiful lines from Martin King means that peace is not just a far off goal that every human being wants to achieve: rather it is a means by which everyone succeeds that goal.



Our lives are imbues with faith and hope not as blind qualities, but as a deep confidence in the rightness of the path of peace along which we daily walk in order to be successful in one’s own life.

Thus, sports are one of these ways to achieve excellence and success. And if we talk about sports then how can we forget the Olympics??

The Olympic Games is a major international event in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The

Olympic Games have come to be regarded as the world’s foremost non-racial sports competition where more than 200 nations participate.



Today, sport has reached a stage of global development that no other human activity can match its impact on society, irrespective of age and frontiers, gives it unequalled potential to mobilize.

WITH THIS UNIQUE POWER TO UNITE COMES A GREAT

RESPONSIBILITY: TO SERVE PEACE.

The Games have grown in scale to the point that nearly every nation is represented. Such growth has created numerous challenges, including boycotts, doping, bribery of officials, and terrorism.

The



reafter, in order to maintain peace throughout the world, an Olympic Truce Committee was also set up.

The Olympic Truce is symbolized by the dove of peace with the traditional Olympic flame in the background.

The Olympic Games not only serves for peace but also modernizes transport as well as infrastructures of the host city.



Therefore, people living in slum, squalid and run-down areas or in not so developed areas get an equal opportunity to have pleasure and enjoy the well developed infrastructure and transport of that place.

The Olympic Truce Committee cut across barriers that divide societies, making it a powerful tool to support conflict prevention and peace-building efforts, both symbolically on the global level and very practically within

communities.

The Olympic Truce believes in promoting the initiatives of VASUDHAIVA KUTUMBAKAM.



This statement not just means that the whole earth is a single family in fact it means about peace and harmony among the societies in the world.

Let us take the instance of Cyprus, which got expelled from Turkey, United Kingdom and Zurich. But in the present day’s scenario, as we all know, United Kingdom, Turkey as well as Cyprus participate in the Olympics despite the fact that Cyprus got divided from them.

Isn’t it a living example for us that the Olympic Truce committee is capable of uniting the world through peace?

It is not just for Cyprus, it is also applicable for the case of North and South Korea, and India and Pakistan.



The Olympic truce also contributed a big hand in the participation of South Africa in the foremost games by being against the racial system.

Everybody recognizes the outstanding contribution of the IOC to the struggle against apartheid and racial oppression in the African Continent.

The basic purpose of the Olympic truce is holding of hands among the nations as well as the athletes. It offers humanitarian support in countries at war.



As we are aware that the Olympics games take place after every four years in different countries; this makes the athletes travel to that particular place and engulf in the culture of that country .

It is with the help of this committee that the athletes of one continent become familiar with the culture, views and thoughts of the athletes belonging to some other continent. They come to know more about the cultures of others.



The athletes chat with each other which also make them aware of the language of that athlete’s country and his school of thought!

As a wide spreader of the culture, the Olympic truce is a very useful tool in encouraging a particular festival.

The Olympic Games occurs for several days, in which simultaneously a festival of that

own particular country can also take place. So the guest athletes present in that country also come to now



about that very festival.

And if they find it impressive, then they also take initiative to celebrate that festival in their own country. They discuss about that festival in there and sometimes also create a blog on the internet.

As an instance, when the commonwealth Games were being held, the participants got impressed of the festival called “Dusshera” which was being celebrated at that time.



The athletes eat the dishes of that very host country and enjoy their taste; they also come to know about spices and flavors of them.

The basic aim of the Olympic truce committee is not just opting for a well developed country having good infrastructure, rather its aim is to make that country have good relations with the other nations.

This will even turn the terrorists as a well-wisher of the host country. He will think twice before attacking the host country as his own countrymen as athletes are already there.
