National River Rehabilitation Program
Definition of River and River Basin
“River” means any river, stream, creek or other natural water course, and/or any tributary, distributary or artificial deviation thereof
(National Land Code 1965)
“River Basin” means the area of land from which all surface runoff flows through a sequence of streams, rivers and possibly lakes into the sea at a single river mouth, estuary or delta
(European Union Water Framework Directive 2000)
Definition of River “Rehabilitation”
4
To bring back river to its original condition (back to nature) with a healthy eco-system
Multi-action and steps to recreate the dynamic balance and function of the river to a sustainable state
River Rehabilitation Objectives
5
To restore natural water qualityTo restore flow regimeTo restore channel stability and geometry
To restore riparian community of life
To restore vegetation and aquatic life
INTEGRATED RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT (IRBM)
13
“The process of coordinating conservation, management and development of water, land and related resources across sectors within a given river basin, in order to maximize the economic and social benefits derived from water resources in an equitable manner while preserving and, where necessary, restoring freshwater ecosystems.”(Adapted from Integrated Water Resources Management, Global Water
Partnership Technical, Advisory Committee Background Papers, No. 4, 2000.)

Conclusion

River as a valuable asset to the country (not a liablity) should be well managed, conserved and rehabilitated from time to time.
Geospatial data capturing the location and ground condition is a very useful information tool that helps in making sound decision within a river basin.
