data description registry interoperability wg at research data alliance third plenary
DESCRIPTION
Data Description Registry Interoperability WG at Research Data Alliance Third Plenary, Dublin, Ireland, March 2014TRANSCRIPT
Data Description Registry Interoperability (WG)
co-chairs: Amir Aryani, Adrian Burton
Agenda:
• working group goal/objective
• participants
• discussion abouto the challenges for cross-platform discoveryo the collaboration opportunities with other groups
Meeting notes:

What is the problem?
Cross-platform discovery• So many places to search
• Research data registries are fragmented across institutions, countries and research domains.
• So many search results• Finding a relevant dataset is not
a trivial task for many researchers.

{All started here!}
Working software solution
• Not aiming to develop new standards or create new protocols,
• instead aiming to leverage existing e-infrastructure to build a set of working software solutions.
Participants
Bilateral projects• INSPIRE-HEP (CERN) and Research Data Australia (ANDS)
Interoperability Project
• Dryad and Research Data Australia Interoperability Project
• NARCIS (DANS) & Research Data Australia Interoperability Project
• VIVO Data Description Exchange Solutions
• DCI (Thomson Reuters) and Research Data Australia Interoperability Project
• DataCite Data Description Exchange Solutions
• da|ra and Data-PASS Interoperability Project
Challenges and Collaboration Opportunities
RDA WG Assumptions
•Activity funded through pre-existing sources
•Willingness to share and to contribute to a global task
•Willingness to extend existing projects to test conclusions
This Working Group
•Existing discovery interoperability projects•Share learning and contribute to a more general framework for discovery interoperability
•Extend existing projects to test and implement that framework
Outputs
•Bi-lateral project reports•Shared Framework document•Installed code base; enabling infrastructure
General Framework – first steps
General Framework – first steps
1. Making it easier to federate and aggregate information from data description registries
2. Making it easier to provide meaningful consolidated discovery
1.Easier Aggregation and Federation
•Reduce friction and unnecessary effort•Existing mature protocols OAI-PMH, OGC CSW, DDI SDMX, OpenSearch, SRU, WPT...
•Identify, list and describe commonly used protocols and their parameters
•Facilitate the market place through registers of compliant registries
Better Discovery
•Standardised concepts•Identifiers for linkage and de-duplication•Research Context: data-grants-publication
Registry [system]
A place [system] where registers (official lists) or records are kept [and made machine accessible]
R
Discovery Services
Some data description registries support web services that enable:
•Run a query•Ask for descriptions
R
Standard Protocols for Discovery
Standard protocols exist for those discovery services
