2. Hi! This PowerPoint is prepared to equip you with knowledge about DATA COMMUNICATION NEXT 3. LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson you should be able to : Define the term Data Communication Define internet Define computer network NEXT 4. LEARNING OBJECTIVES State reasons for computer network List types of computer network Draw the different types of computer network topology NEXT 5. INTRODUCTION Communication happens on a daily basis. We communicate though various types of media transferring data from Point A to point B. In this modern world communication is important in all field of work. People needs to communicate on a daily basis whether doing a project at work, finishing an assignment at school or relaxing at home. Communication makes life easier and as time goes by the level of communication increase as technology improves. NEXT 6. SO WHAT IS DATA COMMUNCATION? Data Communication is the transmission of electronic data from one computer to the next computer through a communication medium. The data transferred is conducted between a source and a receiver. NEXT 7. DATA COMMUNICATION CIRCLE TRANSMISSION LINE CARRYING DATA FROM ONE CIRCLETOTHE NEXT PEOPLE COMMUNICATING WITHINTHE CIRCLES THIS DIAGRAM IS SHOWING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PEOPLE AND DATA COMMUNCATION. NEXT 8. This is a video explaining the Evolution of Communication NEXT 9. THE INTERNET What is it though? In its simplest definition, the internet is a type of network and is also the largest networks that has being created that allow millions of user to communicate with each other. It is also use for various and convenient reasons such as entertainment, researching information and doing business transaction. NEXT 10. People uses the internet for various reasons such as: Sending or reading email Educational purpose Use a search engine Get news online Buy a product online Social network sites NEXT 11. These are some common websites that people visit on a daily basis by means of the internet: You can click on the images to view their website. NEXT 12. BRAIN TEASER TIME!! PRESSTO CONTINUE 13. INSTRUCTIONS This Exercise will test you on your knowledge about internet and websites. Click on the answer which correspond best with the question above. PRESSTO START 14. Question 1. Which of the website allows you to check your e-mails? NEXTEND 15. Question 2. Which of the website allows you to chat and share information to friends online? NEXTEND 16. Question 3. Which of the website is used for online shopping? Twitter NEXTEND 17. Question 4. Which of the website is use to search for information and other websites? END 18. CORRECT! GOTO QUESTION: 1 2 3 4 ENDTEASER 19. INCORRECT! GO BACK ENDTEASER 20. COMPUTER NETWORKS A computer network or data network is a telecommunication network that allows computers to exchange data. In computer networks, networked computing devices (network nodes) pass data to each other along data connections. The best-known computer network is the Internet. NEXT 21. TRANSMISSION MEDIA The Transmission Media Deals with the physical aspect of the equipment that is used to Transmit the data from one node to another node. These types of transmission comes in two categories; the wired connection and the wireless connection. NEXT 22. WIRED CONNECTION Wired Connections are established by cables connecting form one point to the next. These are the following Medium that are used; Twisted Pair Coaxial Cable Fiber Optics Cable NEXT 23. TWISTED PAIR CABLE Twisted pair Cable is the most widely used medium for a all telecommunication. It consist of copper wires that is twisted in pairs The transmission speed ranges from 2 million bit per second to 10 million bits per second Twisted pair comes in Unshielded Twisted pair and Shield Twisted pair. NEXT 24. TWISTED PAIR CABLE NEXT 25. COAXIAL CABLE Coaxial cable is widely used for cable television systems, office buildings, and other work-sites for local area networks. Coaxial consist of copper or aluminum surrounded by an insulated layer. Transmission speed ranges from 200 million bits per second to more than 500 million bits per second. NEXT 26. COAXIAL CABLE NEXT 27. FIBER OPTICS CABLE Fiber optics cable is a glass fiber that uses pulses of light to transmit data. Less transmission loss when using the Fiber optics Fiber optics transmission speeds goes up to trillions of bits per second. NEXT 28. FIBER OPTICS CABLE NEXT 29. Why is Computer Networking important? In our modern world, computer networks are important and essential to provide convenient communication through individuals, companies and other institute. Computer networks connects all our nodes(computers, printers etc.) so they can easily communicate with each other from wide or narrow distances. NEXT 30. Herearesomereasonsforcomputernetworking: Share files with other users within a home, company or acrosstheworld. Getaccesstotheinternetforpersonalorbusinessusage. To share resources such as printers, fax machines and applications. Toplaygamesandsocializewithotherindividual. NEXT 31. TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORKS There are different types of computer networks. Some of the common ones includes: Local Area Network (LAN) Wide Area Network (WAN) Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) NEXT 32. LOCAL AREA NETWORK These types of computer networks connect network devices over a relatively short distance. Some characteristics are: Limited to a single building or site High bandwidth The Network is owned by a organization or company Data and hardware sharing amongst user NEXT 33. WIDE AREA NETWORK WAN spans over a large physical distance. It may be regarded as a collection of LANs dispersed over a geographical area. The Characteristics are: Spread over a wide geographical area. Large number of computer and multiple host. Sophisticated support devices like router and gateways for interconnecting various segment. NEXT 34. WIRELESS LOCAL AREA NETWORK These types of computer networks refer to LANs that are based onWi-Fi wireless network technology Some Characteristics are: Links two or more devices using wireless distribution method Uses microwave technology This gives users the mobility to move around and still be connected to the network. NEXT 35. NETWORKTOPOLOGIES The topology of a network is its physical layout. This is how the computers or terminals are linked together to form the networks.Three basic network topologies are: Star Ring Bus NEXT 36. STARTOPOLOGY The star pattern connects everything to one host(hub),which is the computer that handles the networks tasks. Hub NEXT 37. RINGTOPOLOGY The ring pattern connects the computer and other devices all together without the use of a central hub. Communication flows in one direction around the ring. NEXT 38. BUSTOPOLOGY The bus pattern connects the computer to the same communication line. Communication flows in both directions along the lines. NEXT 39. BRAIN TEASER TIME!! PRESSTO CONTINUE 40.
