She’s a mother, businesswoman, migrant and zoologist. Now, she’s a politician too. As the Country Liberal’s representative for the Casuarina electorate, it’s fair to expect many more remarkable achievements from Giovanna in 2016.Giovanna and husband Dr Grahame Webb run one of Darwin’s most popular tourist attractions, Crocodylus Park, which is home to 10 thousand crocodiles. The park has continued to grow and diversify. They breed crocodiles and harvest eggs from wetlands around Darwin. Giovanna’s crocodile skins, died gorgeous shades of pink, red, blue and every other colour, are sold to high-end European fashion houses including Louis Vuitton and Hermès. What’s more, “Gio”, as she is affectionately known, has developed a pilot program to encourage Indigenous women artists to incorporate crocodile by-products in innovative new art works. The successful Darwin business has three faces. It’s an iconic tourist destination, a place for research into the conservation and farming of crocodiles, and a consulting business. Giovanna has worked closely connecting governments and the private sector, in countries around the world. She has addressed diverse audiences in Australia, Singapore, China and Japan, often capturing their attention with the company’s involvement in the fair and sustainable use of wildlife. Politics and diplomacy are always involved in what she does, hence Giovanna’s natural and exciting transition into the political world.

With close and valued personal friends in both parties, as well as independents, her decision to join the CLP came down to choosing a party that was “willing to work for local businesses, which were truly the foundation of a secure long term future for Territory families”.“I bring to the table some of the experiences that I face in my everyday life. I am a business owner, I have loans to pay, and I am a mother juggling home duties,” she says. Giovanna understands the everyday issues and conflicts that business people in Darwin face, as she has been involved with it for decades. “We need to be bold and strategic in the way we lead Darwin forward, and the Country Liberals Government fully embraces this,” she says. “Recognising and talking about Darwin’s proximity to Asia is one thing - but actively exploiting it, to fuel our economy and tourism industries, is what we need.” Giovanna stresses the need to increase air capacity during the dry season, when visitors want to visit. As prices skyrocket, tourists cannot afford to come, and residents cannot afford to leave. Airline seats to fly ‘down south’ in emergencies, in the peak tourist season, do not exist or are way too expensive.Giovanna says that while tourism and the economy are two key issues she will focus on in her political role, it will not be at the expense of broader community issues.”I’m passionate about community life,” she says. “I am involved in community and family issues continually, and believe they are the very foundation of a strong and secure

society.” As the Country Liberals Casuarina representative Giovanna has already been busy getting about the electorate listening to residents.Giovanna feels that people in the electorate of Casuarina have lost their voice in Government, and her vision is to get it back. “I have been working with the Government on a whole raft of issues relevant to the Casuarina electorate,” she says. Crime, anti-social behaviour, traffic, the hospital – which needs to be more welcoming to everyone – and its problematic car park, are being discussed with Government. She is also excited about the upgrade and development of Casuarina Coastal Reserve, a beautiful, “highly valued” part of Darwin. Giovanna has a long list of plans being discussed with residents of the Casuarina electorate. To help with this she has opened an office in the Casuarina Village (Shop 5) and is ready to be the electorate’s voice to Government.Though Giovanna wears many hats –businesswoman, scientist, and community leader – she is first and foremost, a loving mother. With husband Grahame, her 16-year-old son, Freddy, is the most important part of her life. Giovanna says her decision to go into politics was “a family decision”, with Freddy and Grahame her strongest supporters. In Casuarina, like all electorates, residents seek change over time to improve their livelihoods. There should be no question that Giovanna Webb is capable of making them happen.

Founded 42 years ago, the Party has long been dedicated to the advancement and future of the Northern Territory, with a loyal vision to benefit Territorians.The many extraordinary achievements of the Party over our history should be re-recognised, and brought to light for new Territorians.It was the Country Liberals who developed National Parks and Tourism Centres such as Yulara. The Country Liberals built the gas pipeline and the Northern Territory’s University. It was the Country Liberals who undertook all the negotiations for the extension of the railway from Alice Springs to Darwin and it was the Country Liberals who bought the V8’s to Darwin. These are a few of our achievements over our long history. This Country Liberals Government has been responsible for the largest ever land release programs, has re-established the live cattle and buffalo trade, and has introduced measures to reduce the cost of living. It was a Country Liberals candidate who started the fuel debate, which has led to lower fuel prices for Territorians.

Much has also been said about women leaving the Party in recent times. Over its 42-year history, women have held numerous prominent positions. The first female speaker in the Legislative Assembly was from the Country Liberals and many women have held and continue to hold executive Party positions. Natasha Griggs, the Federal Member for Solomon was the first female member of the House of Representatives elected from the Territory, and three out of four of the candidates for this year’s Federal election are women. In 2012 Lia Finocchiaro, Member for Drysdale was elected the youngest female member of the Legislative Assembly and has held the position of Government Whip for this term. In 2015 Bess Price, Member for Stuart and Minister for Women’s Policy was appointed

to the COAG advisory panel on domestic violence bringing the voice of Northern Territory Women to the table. The Country Liberals made just over 170 election commitments in the lead up to the 2012 Territory election. Over ninety per cent of these commitments are currently in action and more than seventy percent have been delivered. Twenty one out of a possible 25 candidates have been pre-selected for the 2016 Northern Territory election. These candidates come from a broad range of backgrounds and have put their hands up to be part of a team that will keep the Territory moving ahead. They will bring depth and new blood into the Country Liberals Parliamentary team if they are fortunate enough to be elected.

The Party’s membership numbers continue to grow. “It’s really important to become involved if you believe in something,” says Party President Tory Mencshelyi. “There may be some things that I may not agree with but through my involvement in the Party, I can voice my opinion and try to make any changes I believe in.”The Country Liberals remain a grass roots party, with their first and foremost goal being to serve the people of the Territory.

Is a non-government advocacy service for women who have any sort of work-related problem. We have been supporting working women in the Northern Territory since 1997, and we opened a second office in Alice Springs in 2013.Although women have come a long way towards equality in employment, there are still many challenges. While women make up roughly 46% of all employees in Australia, they earn, on average 18% less than men. It surprises many to learn that Australian women have to work an extra 66 days a year to earn the same pay as men for doing the same work. Unfortunately, the gender pay gap has been rising, not falling, over the last 20 years. 1 in 2 working mothers have experienced workplace discrimination as a result of their pregnancy, parental leave, or when they return to work. Women are far more likely to work part-time in low-paid industries and in insecure work and continue to be underrepresented in leadership roles in the private and public sectors. Furthermore, 25% of women have experienced sexual

harassment in the workplace. The end of employment does not bring any better news: average superannuation payouts for women are around half those of men. As a result, women are more likely to experience poverty in their retirement years and be far more reliant on the Age Pension.It is for these reasons that the NT Working Women’s Centre provides a free and confidential service to all NT women. Whether you have questions about sexual harassment, discrimination, unfair dismissal, workplace bullying, your pay and conditions, or domestic violence and work, we are here to help. Our role is to provide you with the information, resources and support you need to make decisions about your work issues. First celebrated in Australia in 1928, a rally was organised by the Militant Women’s Movement in Sydney which called for equal pay for equal work, an eight hour day for shop girls, no piecework, a basic wage for the unemployed and annual holidays on full pay.The United Nations declared 1975 as

International Women’s Year, and officially sanctioned March 8 as International Women’s Day. The day is traditionally marked by the UN with an address by the Secretary General. Recognising the fact that “securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security” are two reasons cited by the UN General Assembly for dedicating a day exclusively to the celebration of women.In the 21st century, a majority of women still carry the significant burden of providing primary care and maintaining culture and family, whilst engaging in paid work, often excluding them from more notable jobs within Australian business and the economy.It is important to keep the conversation going in relation to women’s equality in order for it to become a reality. IWD 2016 events from across the Territory have already been registered with the Office of Women’s Policy (within the Department of Local Government and Community Services). Increasingly, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. In 2015, over 100 countries celebrated

International Women’s Day across the world. The psychology team at Suite 3/6 Woodlake Boulevard, Durack, truly understands some of the challenges faced by people and families living in the Territory. Psychologists Louise, Catherina, Cherrie and Chloe of Darwin Psychology Services, and Dianne of Dianne Knox Psychologist, have been living and working in the Territory for more than 30 years. This long-term experience of life in the Territory differentiates the psychology team, as does their stability. Louise and Dianne are now working with the children and grandchildren of clients they saw more than 30 years ago. Engagement in their learning and school is important for their success at school. One school that is exploring various ways to maintain positive self esteem and motivation in learning is The Essington School Darwin. In 2016 it has expanded its media studies and radio broadcasting program in to television production with the establishment of a TV Studio at the school.In 2015 the School celebrates eleven years of student broadcasting in Darwin. Through its partnership with DARWIN FM (91.5 FM), Essington students conduct a daily youth radio show from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Duke, one of the regular youth DJs this year, said: “When I was first on the radio, my parents were amazed and excited to hear me on the radio. I remember sitting in my Dad’s car for an hour just listening to the radio show we had produced”. In 2015 Middle School students won two national media awards for their animation and short film work. One of these, the Australian Teachers Of Media (ATOM) Award, was presented to students at the awards ceremony in Melbourne in October, 2015.Essington students were also involved in assisting with videoing at the Gamma Festival and provided live footage for Sky News from the Festival thanks to its partnership with Dreamedia. At the recent Commemoration Ceremony for the Bombing of Darwin, Essington middle school students manned one of the cameras providing live feed at the Ceremony. In 2016 it was decided to expand the short film production program into longer programs suitable for broadcast on community television, resulting in the establishment of the School’s TV Studio. The latest digital, broadcast quality cameras, LED lights, microphones and a green screen has allowed students in recent weeks to practice their video and special effects skills.David Cannon, Principal of The Essington School Darwin, said: “The focus on developing high levels of personal communication skills using radio and television broadcasting is based on a program developed in leading US schools. The school’s community links provide opportunities for students to broadcast live each week is designed to enhance the personal communication skills of individual students and to increase their understanding of mass communication, the media”.

WHAT TO EXPECTFirstly our qualified cosmetic tattooist will pencil and outline on your brows to a shape that is to your liking. A full consultation to determine the colour and style that suits your needs takes place, then a brow tidy up will follow and anaesthetic cream will be applied to the area to minimise your discomfort. Your brow is measured and surgical dots are drawn to ensure symmetry.

A small metal hand tool with disposable fine needles is then used to create very fine hairline strokes into the skin. A hypo-allergenic iron oxide pigment is then implanted into the skin and which will generally last between 12mth - 2 years. Results may vary depending on the client’s exposure to sun and their resistance to pigment.

Whilst undergoing the procedure, aneasthetic is continually applied to decrease any pain or discomfort that you may feel. Bepanthen ointment is recommended for daily use for 5-10 days after the procedure.

WILL IT LOOK NATURAL?Yes, cosmetic embroidery looks as if you applied a pencil, a little softer and more muted. Immediately after the eyebrow tattoo treatment the colour will appear stronger and darker for the first 7-14 days. After that, you can lose approximately 10 - 20% of complete colour during the healing process within 7-14 days.

IS THERE ANY DOWN TIME?The majority of people don't need to take time off work. There is usually no swelling with the eyebrow treatments but this can vary from person to person depending on levels of sensitivity.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY NEW BROWS?• Avoid getting the area wet for the first 5 days while your colour is bonding.

• Avoid any exfoliants during the healing process (7-14 days)

• Avoid swimming pools, the beach, steam rooms and saunas during the healing process (7-14 days).

• Apply after-care products recommended by us.

has recently wrapped up for another year and although we are far removed from ‘The big apple‘ there were some hot trends showcased on the runway that we could translate into our every day wardrobes. My picks of the latest trends:

BOLD COLOUR. Every year a few bright colours make their way into the fashion mix that is often dominated by more subtle tones. This year it is red and orange, perfect ‘stand out’ cheerful colours for our tropical climate.

FEATHERS! Subtle reference to bird-like femininity. Delicate, and pretty though somewhat difficult to wear…particularly in the wet season, I am not sure this trend will take off here in Darwin but I like it nonetheless.

BLACK LACE! This was a recurring theme in dresses, accessories and hairpieces. Intriguing and flirty when used sparingly, I predict this will become more mainstream here by the dry. season.

TEENS AND TECHNOLOGY

This study was performed in Brazil, a country which due to government programs has seen a great increase in computer usage throughout all schools over the last 10 years.The use of electronic devices especially in more recent years has become an important part in the lives of adolescents throughout the world, who regularly use computers to carry out academic and leisure activities. The study consisted of 961 boys and girls aged 14–19 years who answered a questionnaire regarding the use of electronic devices and painful symptoms. Specifically these questions related to pain severity, a body diagram for symptom location, and questions related to the use of computer and video games over the last 6 months.The results indicated that the presence of pain was reported by 65.1% adolescents with pain located in the following areas.• Thoracolumbar spine (point between the mid and low back), 46.9%.followed by • Arm 20%.• Neck 18.5% • Shoulder blade region (15.8%)The triggering factors for these symptoms were reported as• Using a computer 31.8%• Physical exercise 20.5%• Electronic games 2.9%

Adolescents also indicated that pain interfered with activities of daily living like• Study tasks 22.8%• Sleeping 18.4%• Playing sports 17.6%Additionally, 29.7% of adolescents said that the presence of pain made them more nervous. Finally and most importantly 32.1% of adolescents reported that they occasionally made use of analgesics, while another 11.1% reported that they frequently used these drugs.This study is important because it indicates how computer and tablet usage affects adolescents in our modern world. This study assessed a variety of important measures regarding adolescent health. Not only did it demonstrate the percentage of adolescents in pain but also reported on important measures like pain location, triggering factors, activities of daily living and medication usage.As younger generations are exposed to more technological advancement it will be interesting to see how we as a society adapt to these changes. Even now we are realizing that we have to take measures to either assist or limit computer and tablet use in our children. Balancing how much they have to do for school and leisure and supporting them with the best ergonomics possible is a challenge we all have to deal with.
