Eugene F. (Buddy) Teevens III, who as a player led Dartmouth to the 1978 Ivy League championship andas a coach led Dartmouth football to back-to-back Ivy League titles in 1990 and 1991, returned as thehead coach of the Big Green football program in 2005. Last year, he led the squad to its best conferencerecord at 5-2 in 17 years to place third in the final Ivy League standings. Only a loss in four overtimes onthe road kept Dartmouth from earning a share of the conference crown.

Teevens, 57, was Dartmouth’s coach from 1987 through 1991. During his final two seasons, the BigGreen posted identical overall records of 7-2-1. With a 6-1 record, Dartmouth shared the 1990 Ivy titlewith Cornell. In 1991, Dartmouth won theoutright championship with a 6-0-1 mark. Hisoverall record at Dartmouth entering the 2014season is 58-80-2.

Teevens holds the Robert L. BlackmanEndowed Coaching Position, named in mem-ory of Bob Blackman, who coached Dart-mouth from 1955 to 1970, and createdthrough the gift of Henry M. (Hank) Paulson

’68, an outstanding offensive tackle who played for Blackman from1965–67.

In addition to restoring Dartmouth’s rich football tradition, Teevenshas been an integral force in a series of major improvements to Dart-mouth’s football facilities, including installation of a FieldTurf surface onMemorial Field for the 2006 season, the opening of the new Floren VarsityHouse that includes training, dressing and meeting facilities in 2007, andlight towers in 2011, not to mention the video scoreboard last year.

From 2002 through 2004, Teevens was the head coach at StanfordUniversity. Prior to that, Teevens was on Steve Spurrier’s staff at the Uni-versity of Florida from 1998 to 2001. His first game with the Gators wasthe 1999 Orange Bowl. In his three full seasons at Florida, the Gatorswent 29-9, participated in three bowl games and finished among the top12 in the final polls each season.

From 1997 to 1998, Teevens was the offensive coordinator and receivers coachat the University of Illinois under Ron Turner. From 1992–96, Teevens was the headcoach at Tulane University. He rebuilt that program and recruited most of the teamthat went 11-0 in 1998. Teevens began his coaching career in 1979 as the runningbacks coach at DePauw University. In 1980, he became the offensive coordinator atBoston University and remained with the Terrier program until 1985 when he wasappointed the head football coach at the University of Maine.

Highly regarded in football circles, Teevens has been an integral part of thefamed Manning Passing Academy since its inception 18 years ago. He serves as anassociate director of the camp, overseeing all aspects of the on-field operation andcoaching staff. He also has been on panels for “Practice Like Pros” to extol thevirtues of cutting down on full-contact practices by focusing on technique, which inturn limits injuries suffered in practice and in games.

At Dartmouth, Teevens was honored as the New England Coach of the Year forthe 1991 season. An honorable mention All-America quarterback in 1978, he led theBig Green to the Ivy title that year. A native of Pembroke, Mass., Teevens and hiswife, Kirsten, have two children: Lindsay who lives with her husband, Matt, inLebanon, N.H., andBuddy, Jr. who joined thestaff this summer andresides locally with hiswife, McKeanna, and son,Eugene V.

In his guide to Dartmouth’s war memorials, history profes-sor Charles Wood wrote, “A football stadium may seem acurious kind of war memorial … but in the 1920s it was achoice that made sense … a stadium looking proudly butsadly to the past even as the nature of its athletic functionallowed the College to look expectantly forward, to bettertimes to come.”

Ninety-one years ago, on a November afternoon in 1923,a Cornell team that would go on to an undefeated seasonand claim the national collegiate championship came toHanover and departed with a 32-7 victory in the MemorialField dedication game.

It’s notable that, a century ago, Dartmouth played (andwon) dedication games at several football stadiums (includ-ing Harvard, Washington and Georgia) but, in the dedicationof its own stadium, couldn’t contain a Cornell team that wasin the midst of a 26-game winning streak. Dartmouth’s nextloss wouldn’t come until the 1926 season after a 21-0-1unbeaten streak that included the 1925 undefeated nationalchampionship season.

About 15,000 people, including 7,300 in the new brickand concrete grandstand, crowded every corner of MemorialField on November 3, 1923, twice as many as had ever

before seen a football game in Hanover and probably twiceas many as will see Dartmouth play Brown today, the lasthome game of the Big Green’s 2014 season. On Monday, aconstruction crew will begin to dismantle the west grand-stand that has been the signature element of Dartmouth’shome football field for over nine decades but, according toengineers, “. . . is near the end of its useful life.”

Over the next 10 months, the west stands will beremoved and replaced. The brick façade and arches that facetoward Hanover’s Main Street will be refurbished andretained, along with the granite slabs and bronze plaques inthe large central archway that honor the 3,407 Dartmouthmen from the classes of 1883 through 1922 who served in themilitary during World War I. There is also a tribute to the 47Dartmouth veterans who, in 1923, were survivors of theCivil War fought 60 years earlier.

The largest bronze plaque bears this inscription:

DARTMOUTH MEMORIAL FIELD • BUILT 1921-1923 BY

THE MEN OF DARTMOUTH IN MEMORY OF THEIR

ONE HUNDRED AND TWELVE BROTHERS WHO

By the early 1900s, especially with the open-ing of Alumni Gymnasium in 1910, the southeastcorner of the Dartmouth campus was establishedas the home for athletic teams. Behind the gym,Alumni Oval included the football and baseballfields and the running track, though the footballand baseball fields were flip-flopped from theircurrent positions until Memorial Field was built.

The committee for construction of MemorialField was formed in 1919. To fund the new sta-dium, the college solicited donations via 90memorial certificates, each valued at $4,000. Whenthe project’s final report was issued in 1926, 4,261donors (the oldest was from the Class of 1854)had contributed $261,817.07.

darTMouTh FooTball:

reflections on Four YearsBy Bruce Wood

What is the most indelible memory you will take with youfrom your career in a Dartmouth football uniform?

With a win today over Brown, another next week atPrinceton and a single Harvard stumble, the answer acrossthe board would be the same: Winning the Ivy League championship.

But with work still to be done and absent a crystal ball,a cross section of Dartmouth’s seniors offered up answersthat paint a pointillist impression of the four years of footballin the lives of the Class of 2015. Here is a lightly edited ver-sion of memories they won’t soon forget:

Senior wide receiver Bo Patterson: “As I look back, I’vefound that most of my favorite moments were when it wasjust the guys and nobody else. Specifically, I loved preseasoncamp and road games where we could all just get away fromthe world and bond as brothers. Coming from a high schoolthat won very few games, I knew coming in that the beautyof football is not in winning games, but in cultivating life-long relationships and memories with a group of guys thatyou’d do anything for. I’ve found this at Dartmouth.”

linebacker Tyler Stout: “I will always remember how muchJeff Winthrop gets our team hyped up before every game.My favorite phrases from Jeff are ‘Juice check,’ ‘Suicide mis-sion,’ and, ‘Ohhhh, no! They’re back.’”

offensive lineman will Guinee: “Sophomore year preseasonkaraoke night when Jeff Winthrop and Teddy Reed did aduet, ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You.’”

Quarterback Alex Park: “Two different experiences with mytwo best friends on the team, Bo Patterson and KirbySchoenthaler. The first was with Bo against Bucknell. I threwa pass down the middle and it was incomplete. While every-one was returning to the line of scrimmage, I looked at Boand quietly asked, ‘Were you open?’ He simply nodded andwe called the same play the very next down and I threw atouchdown to Bo. It was incredible how we were on thesame page. The same thing happened with Kirby Schoen-thaler against Butler in 2012. We were driving from our own5 and needed a first down. We called a pass play whereKirby was supposed to go in motion and run a short outroute. I noticed the coverage and hoped Kirby would as welland cut off his route appropriately. He went in motion andran a perfect route, cutting his out route off before hereached the corner. I threw Kirby the ball and it resulted in afirst down to keep the drive alive. Neither of those playswere particularly significant in the grand scheme of myDartmouth career, but they both mean so much to me for thesole reason that it showed how my best friends and I wereon the same page on and off the field.”

wide receiver ryan McManus: “I would have to say being inthe huddle with my older brother Timmy during freshmanyear — especially as guys joked about having ‘Too manyMcManus’ in the huddle at one time,’ and then also beingable to share a huddle with my younger brother Danny onpunt return. After crossing the goal line at Yale, it was prettyspecial to turn around to see that the first person there togreet me was Danny (and I have him and plenty of others tothank for it).”

Defensive end Evan Chrustic: “Living with all the guys in myclass in the Lodge during freshman preseason before schooleven started. It was at this point that I knew I had made theright choice in coming here and that I would be surroundedby 30 guys that I could call my lifelong brothers.”

Tight end Pat hand: “My favorite memories from footballwere doing one-on-one pass sets my freshman year. Andpancaking (Troy) Donahue in practice. That happened a lot.”

Tailback and longsnapper Marc Sasso: “Sophomore year wehad practice on Halloween and right when we started ouroccasional 2-minute water break we heard the song ‘PeanutButter Jelly Time’ and Dave Jenkerson and Steve Wardripped off their clothes and started dancing in the middle ofthe field in banana suits. It was so awkward and alarmingbecause they were the last people you imagine to do thatand it threw off the rest of practice.”

Tight end Garrett Schmidt: “Princeton was already IvyLeague champs and had an Ivy League all-time greatoffense. At the time we had the best defense in the league. That game we kind of stuck it to them. It was a great way toend the 2013 season. I think that it was also a catalyst for ourgreat play this year and hopefully for years to come.”

offensive lineman A.J. Dillione: “Debuting our new uni-forms and beating Penn this year after falling to them late inthe game three years in a row.”

Senior safety Troy Donahue: “(The last two years Yale has)been undefeated coming in and putting up huge offensivenumbers. Last year it was Homecoming and the best crowdwe have ever had, so that made that win very special. Andthis year we were down early and just fought our way back, making it probably the best win we have had since I havebeen here.”

linebacker Eric wickham: “We would wake up at six everymorning knowing we were heading down to Floren to dothe hardest workout of our life, followed by the longestconditioning session. Guys would be throwing up every-where, sometimes on themselves (won’t name any names),falling out, gasping for air, while in the background weheard, ‘Get back on the *$#@ line! We’re not $#@ donebecause ‘so-and-so’ didn’t feel like running through the$#@ line!’ Freshman winter was one of my hardest terms atDartmouth, but doing it alongside my brothers made everymoment worth it.”

Corner Chai reece: “Probably my first defensive snap at Yalefreshman year. I was unexpectedly thrown in the game on athird-and-short play and we ran man coverage. I was in theslot lined up against Neon Deon (Deon Randall) and had noidea what I was doing. Sure enough, the ball was thrown tohim and I came up and made the tackle short of the firstdown for my first collegiate tackle.”

Defensive end Corbin Stall: “(Last summer) we ran start tofinish in pouring rain and driving hail. With four sprints left,(strength coach Spencer) Brown pulled us off the field due toweather. Before the entire team could leave the field, guysstarted demanding we stay out and finish despite the hail, sowe did. I realized that we had something special going intomy senior season, a drive to win for that guy next to you, nomatter what.”

Safety and co-captain Steve Dazzo: “I can’t narrow my expe-rience down to one memory, but a collection of memories Iwill always remember is singing ‘As the Backs Go TearingBy’ after a win.”

wide receiver and kick returner Kirby Schoenthaler: “I willalways remember singing as a team in the locker room aftera win.”

Co-captain and center Sean ronan: “Rather than a specificmemory, or one single moment that I will take away frommy football career here at Dartmouth, I think the mostmemorable thing is putting on my uniform before everygame. To know that many great players have worn theDartmouth uniform before me is incredible. You only haveso many opportunities to wear the Green as a Dartmouthfootball player, making each moment last and representingthe program as well as the college is something not manyget the chance to do. I’m honored to have been a part of thisteam. It means a lot to me as well as those who have comebefore me.”

MeMorial Field Continued from page 9

The total cost for Memorial Field’s original constructionwas recorded as $257,230.76. Comparatively, the new westgrandstand, including a new press box and an array of con-temporary accommodations, will cost $12.5 million.

During the run-up to the Cornell game in 1923, collegeworkers built additional temporary seating on the east sideof the field and beyond both end zones to supplement thenew permanent grandstand and accommodate the largestcrowd that would see a Dartmouth game in Hanover untilthe late 1960s.

The replacement of the west grandstand is the latest ofnumerous changes to Memorial Field that have occurredover the years.

In 1964, the current three-story press box was built toreplace an open, single-level structure that was deemedunacceptable for television broadcast crews that werebecoming a frequent presence at Memorial Field.

In 1968, temporary bleachers on the east (visitors) sideof the field were replaced by the permanent east grandstandthat seated 9,500 spectators and remained in place untilbeing reduced in capacity to about 3,000 seats when FlorenVarsity House was completed in 2007.

From 1968 to 2007, with temporary seating availablebehind both end zones that at one time totaled 4,000 seats,Memorial Field’s capacity reached about 20,800 to handlecrowds that came to the stadium through the 1970s and intothe early 1980s to see Dartmouth’s games against Harvard,Yale and Princeton. Until the stadium’s seating capacity wasexpanded, Dartmouth’s team had usually played at Cam-bridge, New Haven and Princeton.

The largest crowd to see a game at Memorial Field was40 years ago, in 1974, when Harvard’s first visit to Hanoversince 1955 drew 21,530 spectators. All told, there were eightgames from 1970 to 1984 with crowds exceeding 20,000 fans.Four were for Harvard games (1974, ’76, ’80, ’84), plus twofor Princeton (1970, ’72), and one for each of Yale and Cor-nell (both 1971).

The pending makeover of the west grandstand will com-plete a series of recent changes relating to Memorial Fieldthat began with the installation of a synthetic turf field andtrack (2006), completion of Floren Varsity House and renova-tion of the east grandstand (2007), field lighting to accommo-date night games (2011), and the video scoreboard (2013).

The new west grandstand is scheduled to be ready forDartmouth’s 2015 season. Over the last five seasons, the Dartmouth-Brown series has never failed to provide athrilling game. Each of the matchups in thosefive campaigns have gone down to the wirewith the final margin of victory being no morethan a touchdown. The Bears have won three ofthose games — one in overtime, the other twoby taking the lead in the final two minutes. Thetwo Big Green victories were secured by thedefense after taking the lead for good by thefirst few minutes of the fourth quarter.

Let the home team beware as well; the vis-iting team has emerged victorious each of thelast four seasons. Last year Brown managed tocontain Dalyn Williams, holding him to just 141 total yards for his lowest output in his 19 starts. But Kyle Bramble broke offa 70-yard touchdown run to help the Big Green to a 24-20 win in Providence.

This year’s Brown squad has a lot of new faces on the field, and it has taken some time for the players to work out thekinks. But since opening the year with losses to Georgetown and Harvard, the Bears have won four of six and are coming offa wild 45-42 loss at Yale.

With the graduation of their fifth-year quarterback, the Bears turned to Marcus Fuller behind center, and the payoff hascome in the form of nearly 2,200 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. Fuller carved up the Yale defensefor 393 yards through the air while completing 27 of 39 throws with a pair of scores and a pick.

The running game has not been as stout, although Brown surprised Penn two weeks ago by racking up 262 rushingyards in a 21-13 triumph. The surprise was 6-5, 240-pound quarterback-turned-running back Seth Rosenbauer who rumbledfor 206 yards on 30 carries with two touchdowns. Andrew Coke is normally the featured back and leads the team with 453yards while averaging 4.4 yards and tallying four touchdowns. But as a team, the Bears are among the bottom 20 FCS teamsin rushing yards per game at 113.4.

The passing game, however, is at the opposite end of the spectrumwith Fuller as Brown ranks 15th nationally with about 275 yards everySaturday through the air. Brian Strachan is the top target with 47 catchesfor 563 yards and five touchdowns, all of which lead the Bears. But thereis also Alex Jette (23 receptions, 378 yards), Troy Doles (22 for 402) andReiley Higgins (22 for 321) on whom the Dartmouth defense will have tokeep tabs.

Speaking of defense, Brown has posted similar numbers to the BigGreen. The Bears are strong against the run (127.5 ypg allowed, 21stamong FCS teams) but have yielded over 240 passing yards. Both figuresare slightly better than Dartmouth’s, but both teams have surrenderedabout 22 points a game.

The top three tacklers are all linebackers, led by Xavier Russo with 67stops, which trails only the Big Green’s Will McNamara by one for theleague lead. Ryan MacDonald has come up with some big plays with oneinterception and two fumble recoveries, the latest of which he returned 53yards for a touchdown against Yale. Defensive end Chad Berry is the toppass rusher with three sacks as well.

Head coach Phil Estes, now in his 17th season guiding the program,is the second winningest coach in Brown football history and won his100th game with the Bears in a 27-24 win over Holy Cross back on Oct. 11.He has three Ivy League crowns to his name, including the Bears’ first-ever outright title in 2005, and was a finalist for the Eddie RobinsonAward each of those years. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he grew up inLaconia, N.H., and is a member of the Laconia High School Hall of Fame.He went on to become a first team All-New England and Yankee Confer-ence selection as a senior at UNH before graduating in 1980.
