Dear Darling Reader,

Hard to believe it’s time for tinsel, turkey and trifle again, but here we are with a Festive issue that positively sparkles with glitz, glamour and good cheer. Make the most of it, we say, before the global meltdown spoils the party. Turn up the volume with Inspiring Woman Alex Howlett, who juggles her role as mother, singer and really making a difference with her amazing African charity, FoCT. Dress for the occasion with Alice Wood who helps us turn a day outfit into an elegant evening look. Making waves and putting us all to shame is Wimbledon swimming legend, Jane Asher and international bridge greats coming to our own Wimbledon Bridge Club for ‘A Night with the Stars’. So here’s to a very Hippie Christmas from San Lorenzo Fuoriporta.

The movers and shakers of the Wimbledon business world get their Merton Business Awards for 2011 and Julia Boggio, photographer extraordinaire and past Darling Cover Girl, wins Entrepreneur of the Year for the second time. A long way from home, South Africans who have contributed to life in SW London and celebrating summer fruits with Abundance.

So lots to think about and lots to love this Festive Season as we wish all our readers and supporters a happy, healthy 2012 to come.

Sassy, charismatic and dynamic are just a few words that describe Alex Howlett. Juggling three

children under the age of eight, singing in a band and running a charity, it’s no wonder she doesn’t have much down time, but she wouldn’t change it for anything. When she tells me that she likes to unwind with a glass of wine watching CSI or 24, I connect with her immediately.

Have you always lived in Wimbledon – what do you love most about it?I moved to Wimbledon with my family in 1976, so I’ve seen many changes, but intrinsically it’s still the same. It’s got everything - great shops, the common, a community feel and it’s full of lovely people.

What are your favourite village haunts? I’m on the common most days with the dog and I love that hour of peace and fresh air. My husband and I enjoy eating out at the Fox and Grapes or Côte Bistro and drinking at the charming Crooked Billet or Hand in Hand. Obviously the shops are a girl’s dream, but on the rare occasion I have some ‘me’ time, I enjoy a coffee in Paul or Le Pain and watch the world go by.

Tell me about the band that you sing in?Any Swing Goes is an 18 piece big band that burst onto the

scene in 1999 – our music includes classics from the 1930s and 40s through to the later styles of jazz swing. We perform at many London venues - the best gig I’ve sung at was at The 100 Club and I’ve even backed Barry Manilow at Wembley Arena!

Were you a keen singer as a child?I’ve always been a performer. My parents were opera singers, so singing is in my genes.

You’ve recently made an album – reveal all!A friend who is a record producer inspired me and we recorded

‘Once Upon a Lifetime’ in three months. It’s swing/jazz with a twist and each song resembles significant events to me over the past 20 years.

What inspired you to set up your charity, FoCT?I’m the co-founder with my husband of ‘Friends of the Children of Tanzania’ (www.foct.org.uk), a UK charity based in Wimbledon. FoCT was the brainchild of a friend who discovered a deprived area in the North West region of Tanzania, where most families live below the UN’s $1 per day poverty line. Once you visit the country and the people, they never leave you. I can shut my eyes and I’m back there in an instant, with the colours, the smells, the air and the beautiful faces. I’m so lucky in many ways and I just wanted to make a difference - all it takes is a little time and a little money.

The charity aims to support and educate disadvantaged children, mostly disabled, homeless or orphans due to HIV/AIDS. For the children of Tanzania, education is the key to a better life.

I’m sure that retail therapy must be the last thing you have time for, but if you were to indulge in an afternoon shopping in the village, where would you go and what would you be most likely to buy? I’ve recently downsized my body, so I’m looking to restock my wardrobe. I would go shopping in Question Air, Matches, MaxMara and LK Bennett and I like to buy my make-up from Space NK. I always love a good sale!

What advice can you give to Wimbledon women to follow their passions?Wimbledon is full of

extraordinary women who could run the world! Do what you believe in - if you are passionate about something it’s infectious to others and the sky’s the limit. Never underestimate the capabilities of a passionate woman!

Alex is hosting a fabulous evening on 10th November at the 100 Club in London. 11 lucky people will be singing with her swing band to raise money for her charity. ‘Once in a Lifetime’ CD will be on sale and all proceeds from this to go to FoCT. alexandrahowlett.com | foct.org.uk

fashion

I started my career in the heady days of 80’s London working for a large advertising agency.

Back then, Christmas parties started in October and were a non-stop, survival of the fittest until Christmas. The only belts we tightened were the wide shiny ones at our waists – and that was just to make those shoulder pads look bigger.

Times have definitely changed. For most of us, that seasonal party invitation is more likely to be a quickly snatched glass of wine in between leaving the office and the last train out of Waterloo.

So how to bring something of that seasonal party glamour

back into our lives when full-on party wear isn’t required on the 23.20 to Wimbledon?

The key is to choose clothes that transform easily from day to nighttime glamour in minutes.

The drama is in the detail! The key to quick-change evening glamour is in the detail. I’ve selected some perfect pieces from French fashion company, Captain Tortue, who’ve made this type of smart dressing all their own. With the help of my beautiful friend, Anita Feron Clark, we’ve

chosen work day looks and transformed them into stunning stop the traffic, book me a table at the Ivy, outfits for night.

I love Captain Tortue’s friendly, inspirational personal shopping experience. Invite a few friends over for a fun style evening or coffee

morning or book a one-to-one appointment. You’ll be rewarded with a unique wardrobe of stylish smart pieces that work, whatever the occasion.

Then go out and party like it’s 1982!

With as many as half a million South Africans and Zimbaweans reportedly living in the UK and mostly south of the Thames, it’s little wonder that Wimbledon is often referred to as SA19. We dug up a sparkling handful of shining gems right on our doorstep

The Jacaranda TreeLocal entrepreneur, Kelly Phillips, has partnered with Africa’s oldest gold mines to bring a stunning new range of jewellery to our shores and has managed the impossible –a launch in John Lewis stores for Christmas! Even Cyril Ramaphosa, founder and Chairman of the Shanduka Group who own some of the mines, was at the Oxford St launch.

Kelly: “The Jacaranda Tree was borne out of our passion to create beautiful products made in South Africa and ethically sourced. All the gold we use in creating our jewellery can be traced to source, from independently, ethically audited and verified mining and

manufacturing operations.”Designed by award winning international designers with gold taken from deep within the heart of the Makhonjwa mountains in South Africa, the oldest gold in the world, dating back more than 3.5 billion years. Made at its foothills by local artisans from socially disadvantaged communities, trained to the highest standards and given a fair wage in line with fairtrade principles. They are provided with much needed skills development and employment in an area of high deprivation helping to alleviate poverty and improve the health, welfare and happiness of the community whilst helping to build an essential and sustainable economy. Every piece of jewellery is hand finished in solid 18ct gold set with semi precious stones and diamonds from Africa.

“When you wear jewellery from The Jacaranda Tree,” says Kelly, “you will be making a difference and a direct contribution to community development projects in South Africa. Not

just fairtrade, nor aid, it is quite simply a responsible and sustainable business.” Available at John Lewis stores from November or johnlewis.com and thejacarandatree.co.uk

Pauline St. Claire, a TEFL teacher in Germany, sent us this wonderful update on her unusual teaching methods. She writes:

"Here are some of my very enthusiastic students, as you can see they are really enjoying themselves. Their homework assignment was to choose and an article from their Darling magazine and to write a summary to present to the class for a group discussion. This proved to be a most interesting and informative exercise with wonderful improvisation and spontaneity.

For example, one of Maria Jevtiv's articles was chosen by the homeopath in the group, while our dental assistant told us all about the Aura Dental Centre. Each member of the group found something of huge interest. They were all very interested to hear your story when I told them how you had created the magazine and they have all fallen in love with Darling."

With an Indian Summer and a late start to autumn, it seems

unimaginable to be thinking that the Christmas season will so soon be here.

I am afraid I do start off with such good intentions each year, promising myself that I will have cards written and ready to post at the start of December, to have all presents purchased and wrapped by the time the children are performing their nativities and the Carol concerts begin. All this perfect organisation will give me plenty of time to plan for hosting a seasonal drinks party, handing presents out from under a perfectly decorated tree, carols playing in

the background and the smell of homemade mince pies and mulled wine wafting through the house.

Each year I refer to my Christmas Delia Smith bible for guidance and inspiration. My biggest wish is to arrive at the big day with such precision organisation that I can look and feel relaxed and truly enjoy the festive season with my family and friends.

As the big day approaches, the tree is not up, only a few days to go and I still have not planned the menus. A frenzied visit to the supermarket, a Christmas eve queue in HMV and a festive parking ticket are all part of the tradition for me! I arrive home, hot, flustered and 1001 things

still to do in just a few hours as my husband asks “Where is the Sellotape?” and “I thought it would be nice to invite some friends over for a festive drink tonight” as I throw some cocktail sausages into the oven and rush to change into something red or tartan to match my face!!!

Just managing to attend the midnight service, singing those familiar carols and taking a moment to reflect, I return to a quiet house. I sink into bed making a promise to myself that next year will be different....

This festive season The Forest Bailiff have sourced some really stunning affordable and inspirational British craft and design for your home and gifts for your loved ones. All items have been carefully chosen to be useful, admired and treasured for many years to come.

Jane Asher is famed for her swimming success –a veteran Masters Club swimmer, she travels the

world in competitions and, at 80, has no intention of stopping. Jane holds 24 World Records – despite undergoing a second hip replacement! The swimming-pensioner describes herself as: “a competitive swimmer of advanced years who still enjoys the joy of the chase.”

Moving to Wimbledon 16 years ago, Jane taught swim classes at St Michaels and Sheringdale schools. Currently teaching at Kings College School, she has a huge fan-base: “I can hardly walk down the road without the pleasure of a friendly greeting from someone. Wonderful.”

By Emily Ansell

Jane also enjoys Thai Chi, Pilates and walks on Wimbledon common. The wonder-woman said: “London is a wonderful city and Wimbledon is one of its most wonderful corners.” Jane believes her advanced years give her an advantage in swimming: “I know my body well (so I should by now!) My speciality is hanging onto the pace, just behind the leaders, and then giving it every last ounce of power to roar past on the last length to win.”

She even crossed the Hellespont, a channel swim from Asia to Europe, a few months after her hip replacement! After being told the conditions were too dangerous, Jane dove into the water. Not one to be beaten by the weather, the feisty-lady

said: “I was very happy with the decision to get in there and get on with it. It was just a case of swimming on, over and under the waves! “ Jane won her age-group but felt her age when realising she had lost her clothes. Spending the rest of the day in her costume, she was happy to get a good tan!

The Great Britain Championships in Leeds were the most nerve-wracking for Jane. The swimmers had to launch from starting blocks like lightning and she worried her age would slow her reaction time. Jane had nothing to fear. She went home having broken world sprint records, a British and European record and others previously set by herself.

Jane often wins against younger competitors: “When I beat younger swimmers I get a cheer, and when I break a record it gets a very big cheer.

‘’It’s very motivating, but it will be a relief when I finish this month with the last race.’’ Perhaps she also enjoys sitting at home with a cup of tea after all?

your outer beauty – first lesson free

Tell us more about the faceliftWith Chi Gong practice, which is over 2000 years old, there are many health benefits. By cultivating and balancing our energy (Chi) internally this manifests externally so our eyes can sparkle more, our face becomes softer, we smile more and we often look naturally rejuvenated. Once connected with the Chi it is like connecting with the source, which helps to reorganize and re-structure our energy system. Through the practice, we also learn how to sustain a vibrant, healthy state.

How important is it to dedicate time to yourself ?Generally in daily life we are in a casual state, our energy is scattered, our mind is not very clear and our health can suffer long term. After a class we can

feel re-charged and nourished as we go from a casual state, into a better and more organized state. We also have the opportunity to take time to look deeper within.

Does the practice help us to connect to the source of life?I teach techniques that help us log on to the cosmic energy network that makes our life possible. When we connect with our true nature on a deeper level, we connect better with other people and cope better with the world around us and uncover our joy from within. We find we do not need so many external distractions or stimulants to make us happy, nor look at other

Abundance Fruit Day was held recently at St Mark’s Church garden, behind

Wimbledon Library and Darling Editor, Karine Torr was there to savour the delights.

People came along with a bag of apples or pears to crush at the fruit press. There were jams and chutneys, cakes, a fruit swap shop, a pie-making demonstration, as well as honey from Wimbledon Bee-Keepers, fruity cards and music from The International Ukulele Orchestra. Also, great advice was available on caring for your fruit tree from the local fruit tree expert on the information stall.

Over the summer months, Abundance Wimbledon had been picking fruit in Wimbledon and beyond and over 1 tonne of cherries, plums, damsons

and apples had been picked. Instead of going to waste, this fruit has been eaten, made into jam, chutney and crumble, and some has been used by the Wimbledon Guild in their kitchen or to distribute to older people, Faith in Action and the Shree Ghanapathy Temple (both providing food for the homeless), Home Start and the Asian Elderly project. All of this has only been possible with the help of lots of people doing what they can and of groups kindly publicising this project to their members.

It was a splendid event with our Mayor of Merton, Cllr Gilli Lewis-Lavender, doing her bit, pressing apples for juice to the joyful strains of the Ukulele Orchestra as well as stopping to chat to eccentric foodie, Tim Keates, tweed-clad and moustachioed ‘peddler’ who

had just completed the amazing Great British Food Cycle 2011 End to End Challenge from John O’ Groats to Land’s End. He covered 1200 miles with visits to 59 artisan food producers on the way, and all on a butcher’s bike which was a 1930’s Grundle Model T with only a single gear

and rod brakes! Speedy it was not, but he covered about 55 miles a day at a comfortable cycling pace.

“This is a nationwide campaign aimed at getting people back in touch with the great British food that’s on their doorsteps throughout the land. The cycle ride will create a ‘food-chain’ through Great Britain,” explained Tim.

So next summer we all know what to do with our excess fruits and here’s hoping the abundance event becomes an annual event on the Wimbledon calendar.

Woodstock, 1969, and my dad had the wonderful idea of

decorating a Christmas tree with joints. Underneath it he placed a placard with the words “Hippy Christmas”. What? It was the 60s man, give me a break, people were crazy in those days. Of course they weren’t real spliffs - just a blend of tobacco and culinary herbs - but they seemed to work on some of the more willing diners (placebo is latin for ‘I shall please’).

But the early 60s were primitive days. I remember living in a flat in Notting Hill and adding salt to a large tin of Smiths crisps as dad punctured small holes into a Watneys Party Seven keg and awkwardly poured foaming warm bitter into half-pint glasses for our guests. There was a black and white TV set in the corner with just BBC1 and ITV, David Frost, and God Save The Queen at five to midnight. Then, one day in 1969, it broadcast all night long as we watched Neil Armstrong’s ghosted image on the moon.

And so, from this era emerged the energy to saturate life with imagination, colour and music.

And drugs. How so many survived that era to live comfortably on into this one is a miracle, given the many casualties of excess, not least some of the most sensational artists such as Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

Drugs have been promoted as agents of emancipation when associated with recent eras of social change but it would be spurious to think we couldn’t have achieved all this without them. Certainly, they might have helped the arts, but to an often overstated degree and, on balance, they probably caused a lot more harm than we might admit, especially to relationships and, indirectly, to children.

The reality is that whilst all these hedonistic shenanigans were

going on there were scientists and research academics all over the world trying to solve issues like Malaria and the Quantum Paradox.

So, to those surviving septagenarian ‘cats’ currently awaiting a new ball-joint, courtesy of scientific progress, here’s wishing you hip-py Christmas again.

Numerous surveys conducted over recent years have all placed relationship

issues, separation or divorce in the top five most stressful things you can experience in life.

But, with changes on the horizon that you will soon be able to buy a divorce with your groceries and the wealth of empty promises you can find for a ‘quick and easy’ divorce on the internet, how can you be sure you are getting professional and quality advice on these difficult issues? At Hart Brown we pride ourselves on our

family department, which is made up of a team of solicitors, led by Sharon Powell, who provide expert advice in a calm and understanding manner.

How can I get a divorce? There is only one ground for divorce in England and Wales and that is the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. If a client has reached this conclusion, they are required to prove it by establishing one of the following: adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, two years’ separation with consent and five years’ separation.

Page 35: Darling Magazine November 2011

legal

Kate Smith

How long will it take?Providing there are no problems, the legal process of divorce can take approximately 4 - 6 months between issuing the petition and obtaining the decree absolute, which officially divorces the parties. However, in some cases where there are outstanding financial issues or arrangements for the children, the divorce may take longer.

What assets will be divided? There are some that are not in my name?In the first instance, all assets no matter who owns them, or whether they are overseas, will be included in the matrimonial pot, but this is not to say they will all be considered in the negotiations. It is advisable to make sure your paperwork is in order as both spouses are obliged to provide full details of their income and assets and can be ordered by the court to do so.

Will I be able to stay in the house? There is no straightforward answer to this as every case is different. There are a number of factors that must be considered when addressing the division of the matrimonial finances, of

which housing resources and needs are but two.

I haven’t worked for many years, will I receive any maintenance? While every case turns on its own merits, it is likely, provided there are funds available, that an order for maintenance could be made in this scenario. The issues for negotiation would be how long the order should last for and how much is to be paid.

I am not married but we do have children, do I still get half the assets if we separate?Sadly, there is no such thing as a ‘common law marriage’. The financial relief available to separating married couples is not available to separating cohabitees. This means that other options may need to be considered, for example bringing an application under the Children Act 1989, which allows a parent to apply for financial relief on behalf of the child or children, rather than themselves. In light of the possible uncertainty, it is often helpful (although perhaps not very romantic!) to have a written agreement drawn up before you move in together, which can set out how the finances will

be dealt with both during the relationship and in the event of any separation.

My partner wants the children. Is this possible? There are many issues that are considered when addressing where the child, or children, shall live or how much contact should take place with the non-resident parent, the most important of which is undoubtedly ‘what is best for the child?’.

The area of matrimonial law is often confusing and can be complex. If you would like further information or to have a discussion about your situation, please do not hesitate to contact Kate on 020 8947 8171 or [email protected].

building

As the days get shorter and colder, it is time to retreat to the comfort of our homes,

escaping the mad rush which always precedes Christmas. Your home should feel like a haven or oasis of calm filled with all the things you love. If your home does not evoke these feelings it is time to start planning the improvements. Like most good things in life, this is something you would rather not rush. So settle into that comfy sofa and give some thought to the overall look and feel that you would like to achieve. Let your imagination run riot and look around for ideas and inspiration, then consult an architect or interior designer. This will enable you to better convey to them or your builder exactly what it is you are trying to achieve.

If you don’t know what you really want, it can lead to

misunderstandings and expensive mistakes. A good architect will inspire you to create a home with interesting and architecturally pleasing features. Instead of the standard box like extension, he or she could suggest ways to add interest, perhaps changing the roof line, height of doors or windows or incorporating a bay window to match the existing building. They would also specify what materials to use in the build and may suggest a feature wall with exposed brick to add texture and atmosphere to a room.

Another important and often neglected feature is lighting. Again, this is something your architect or interior designer should be able to help you with. Using an interior designer can end up saving you a lot of time and money as they can source your paint, tiles and finishes, often at a discounted rate. Knowing exactly what you want

and what you will need to create the look you are after, helps you plan your budget and helps your builder avoid unnecessary delays so he can get on with the job of creating your dream home.

PRESSURE COOKERCan our children cope and would MISP help? Darling investigates

Elaine Halligan of The Parent Practice reports that she sees many a concerned parent worried about their children’s stress levels; concerned that they may not be able to cope in today’s competitive world. Many parents want to find a way of living and parenting that is less anxious and less competitive, and explore which schools are offering a counter-balance where children learn to be, and to think and act outside the box, rather than

simply perform well in tests. The latest IB curriculum offered at KCS is a good example of a solution.

She reports “Many parents want to explore how to raise their children in a way that will redefine the way they view success and themselves? Can we help our children do well and be creative, motivated and happy rather than just following a script and learning to rote? At The

Parent Practice we believe there are things parents can do that will help kids view success and failure differently, that will help them be motivated and creative learners and happy and confident people.”

“At a time when we place so many restrictions on our children, we need to give them the space and confidence to explore the new, to become independent, and to take risks. You learn more from making mistakes than from getting everything right.” Heather Hanbury Head of Wimbledon High School.

“Parents play a key role in their child’s success and they can help their child achieve their full potential by supporting, encouraging and nurturing their interests and enthusiasm for learning. It is essential that parents support success in learning by establishing the boundaries and ground rules in which their child can achieve.” Alison Jerrard Head of Ricards Lodge.

What about stress and the very small child? “After working with children for over thirty years I can see the amount of pressure being put on children as young as three years old,” observes Eveline Drut, Head of the Eveline Day

The declarer, a romantic novelist, took a genteel sip of tea as she watched West lead Ad and the dummy come down. With four heart tricks and three clubs, it seemed as if the spade suit was her only salvation. However, when West continued with Kd, felling dummy’s Qd, and then played 10d, declarer faced three diamond losers and two spade losers - a failing proposition.

If declarer plays on spades, or cashes her heart winner, she is down. Instead, our heroine, cashed Ac and Kc, delighted to see that East dropped Jc. Now, she could cross to dummy’s 10c, return to hand with the hearts, and enjoy her Qc as her ninth trick, without even touching spades.

Such play would be sure, it was commented, to attract the most eligible of suitors for a torrid and passionate romance...

With UK Bridge Guru Paul Mendelson

School. “We have seen an increase in the demand for tutoring outside of school hours. No longer can a child expect to gain a place at their local secondary school, causing parents to have to tutor their children. A recent head of a top Independent Secondary school said that she “didn’t want girls coming to her school, that had been trained up and tutored to pass the entrance exam and then by Christmas would be crying because they were unable to keep up with their class.” Too much pressure on a child can lead to anger, feeling withdrawn, sadness and hopelessness, all symptoms of depression.

Massage In School Programme – MISPMary Atkinson is an instructor on this programme and is keen to spread the vision of positive touch for children in school and at home. Last year she won an “Outstanding Achievement Award” for her work in complementary therapies. Recently I was invited to a group discussion where I met Eveline and we had some firsthand experience of this gentle, relaxing technique.

“I love the idea of MISP in schools,” says Eveline, “as I feel it would benefit all children. After experiencing a brief session myself, I immediately felt the benefits. I felt more relaxed, closer to the partner that I was working with and much more part of the group. “There was laughter, conversation and warmth in the group, after the session. I feel it would be ideal to bring MISP into schools. Children would connect with one another, first asking permission to massage the child next to them in a kind and friendly and manner and saying thank you and the end of the session. “This would increase respect, harmony and bring closer rapport to any group. Perfect for schools with any age group!”

Merton was the first London borough, I’ve been told, that started using this technique about 10 years ago. It didn’t seem to get very far but perhaps there is a need to resurrect this technique again. www.maryatkinson.com

Terry Hewett Chair of the Wimbledon Bridge Club reports

The Stars are coming out in force to help us raise money for Alzheimer’s Research

UK, WaterAid, Helen & Douglas House and Help for Heroes. In November, the Wimbledon Bridge Club hold a Charity Auction/Pairs event during which Paul Mendelson will be wielding the gavel as auctioneer of the stars. Nearly all of the big names of UK Bridge have been involved at some point. Last

year we had 35 stars playing and this included world number one, Fulvio Fantoni, who flew in from Italy (for the second year in a row) at his own expense just to play. Our efforts raised £19 000! This year’s line up is shaping up to be most exciting. Fulvio will be back as will Andrew Robson and many more mega stars.

We are now taking bookings for our Auction Pairs on Sunday 27th November when you may

take part in Paul Mendelson’s entertaining auction of Stars and a game of duplicate bridge. Contact DetailsIf you would like to attend the auction and/or to place a bid to play with one of the Stars in the Night of the Stars on Thursday 23rd February email [email protected] Bids for Stars may be placed without attending the auction by visiting wimbledonbridgeclub.co.uk

abandon the religious imagery as it is making me uneasy.) It may be the defining point of a woman’s mid-life crisis, to start liking golf. Now I only have to see a golf ball lying in the grass and I mentally select a club for it, my soul flooded with desire to send the ball into its lyrical trajectory through the unfettered air onto the green. From there, a velvety putt - ah, the softest of touches - to see the ball breast the sward and dive into the hole,

as a lapwing nimbly to her nest. My favourite lozenge-pattern jumper is neon green and mauve, and I recently joined in heartily with the lynching of a woman who walked past the tee with a crying baby in a pushchair. I am actually still at the stage where I quadruple-bogey most holes, but this is good. This is playing to my handicap of 124, so I am happy. It turns out I DO have the temperament for golf after all! If simply not the talent.

Golf. Does the word thrill you and send you running to put on a lurid,

lozenge-patterned jumper, or does it fill you with disdain? Are you picturing that little heaven, the 18th hole at Royal Thames Ditton, or do you envisage ghastly old snobs called Dennis and Basil, charging around in buggies, trying to ban women and ethnic minorities from their club?

Years ago I was told, in a well-meaning way, that there was no point me trying golf, as I did not have the temperament for it, and it made me take against it rather wholeheartedly. My occasional forays onto golf courses confirmed a sense of Satanic alienation, as I was yelled at for walking across a green, yelled at for bringing my child into the club-house in denim, yelled at for walking into a room not for women.
