WELCOME TO DAREBIN ARTS
EVENT GENRE lEGENd:
It is my great pleasure to present this program of Darebin Arts events and activities for the second half of 2016. Reflected in this brochure is Council’s commitment to supporting the arts in our municipality. The City of Darebin is home and place of work to a community of artists and performers, reflected by the broad range of cultural facilities, creative spaces, festivals, events and programming. The City of Darebin takes pride in leading and contributing to a social, economic, access, and importantly, a cultural story. The value of the arts is above and beyond the ability to inspire, innovate and reflect our identity; it also generates an industry bringing investment and jobs to the municipality.
Did you know that Darebin is home to one of Victoria’s largest concentration of musicians in a number of different
musical genres, including country and folk? This year the City of Darebin is particularly pleased to present the twentieth anniversary of Darebin Music Feast. This week-long event, which opens on 27 October, is larger than ever and will celebrate Darebin’s diverse musical community. The strength of the festival is demonstrated by the thousands of musicians who have embraced performing at this event over the years. I encourage you to look through this program and support our local creative culture by getting involved in the fabulous range of events and opportunities on offer.
Welcome to Darebin Arts.
Cr Vince FontanaMayor, Darebin City Council
Darebin City Council acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional landowners and the historical and contemporary custodians of the land on which the City of Darebin and surrounding municipalities are located. Council also recognises and pays tribute to, and celebrates, Darebin’s long standing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.
PICASSO AND hIS DOG
By Lemony S Puppet Theatre, presented by Darebin Arts’ Loud Mouth.
One fine spring morning during 1957, an elongated
sausage dog named Lump arrived at the villa of the
great 20th Century artist Pablo Picasso. Lump looked
into the deep, brown eyes of the artist and decided he
was home. Combing puppetry and live performance,
Picasso and His Dog tells the story of a man and his
dog, deep love and the art their friendship inspired. This
new work by Lemony S Puppet Theatre is a gorgeous
mix of live art-making on-stage, puppetry and magic
realism. Picasso and His Dog is a visually stunning and
deeply moving celebration what it is to create, to be
creative and the extraordinary bond between dogs and
their humans.
Post show, children can delve further into the world
of puppetry in a free participatory workshop. With the
characters they have just met still fresh in their minds,
participants will create their own shadow animal puppet
and get the opportunity to play behind a shadow screen.
Running for 30 minutes in the Darebin Arts &
Entertainment Centre foyer, directly after the show.
Created for children aged 4+ and their families.

This brand new Circus Oz show rockets into Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre in September 2016. An eclectic mix of extraordinary skills, ridiculous characterisation, hilarious mayhem and fabulous live music, this show is a celebration of the great values of Circus Oz that have generated critical acclaim and woven the company into the hearts of audiences around the world.
TWENTYSIXTEEN is a refreshing cocktail of new and old, innovation and tradition. The turbo-charged acrobats bring amazing new skill and wizardry to the flying trapeze, the Chinese pole and unicycle adagio. A brand new group-juggling act is sure to drop jaws as 21 clubs duck and weave from acrobat to acrobat.
Two hours of high-voltage acrobatics and explosive aerial antics all accompanied by the sensational Circus Oz band. TWENTYSIXTEEN is classic Circus Oz: absurd Australian larrikins pushing the boundaries of possibility and defying the laws of physics.
TWENTYSIXTEEN is suitable for people of all ages.

A girl, her dad, the open road, and a lifetime of memories.
Tash and her Dad are going on a road trip. Home to country, where the sky is higher and the world goes on forever.
It’s a long way from the wide streets and big old houses of Tash’s childhood. Back then it was just the two of them. Two Black faces in a very white suburb. Dad still thinks he’s the king of cool, but he’s an old fella now. It’s time for Tash to take him home.
Which Way Home draws on writer Katie Beckett’s personal memories of growing up with her single Aboriginal father.
Comedy: Tomorrow When the J Began – by Sammy J
A brand new show from multi-award winning comedian Sammy J (ABC TV’s Ricketts Lane).
Performance: Blind Spot – by Daniel Santangeli and Rosalind Hall
Places the audience into the shoes of a person found guilty of a crime. Experienced two-at-a-time, audiences are taken through a series of interactive installations and performances.
Dance: An Alternative Route – by Emily Robinson
The death of ambition fears authority, pines for individualism and marvels in the communal. This is for unproductivity, collapse, and the confusion of the artist’s role as a designer.

PUBLIC ART
‘URBAN ABSTRACTiON’ By MATTHEW DE MOSiER
‘Urban Abstraction’ by Matthew de Mosier is a large scale abstract installation designed to transcend its unassuming origin. At JUMP Junction in Preston, the familiar Zebra crossing will be distorted, abstracted and repeated, turning the footpath into a giant canvas that reclaims the area for pedestrians and invites people to stop, explore and reconsider.

‘OUTSiDE LiViNG’ By JAMES VOLLER
‘Outside Living’ by James Voller is a photographic installation that places images of homes into public spaces. It asks questions about where people are living in Darebin and who they are. This project involves connecting with the local community and photographing living rooms which will then be superimposed on a public site in Reservoir.

‘HERE’ By KiRRiLy ANDERSON
‘Here’ by Kirrily Anderson will celebrate in the form of paste-up portraits a cross-section of three to four community participants who regularly use the sporting facilities at Donath Dole Reserve. This project includes research and connecting with potential subjects from the local sporting community. Photographs will be illustrated and displayed on a wall at Donath Dole Reserve.

Re-visioning Histories presents Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists from across Australia. Through a range of media, these artists create objects of attitude – propositions that acknowledge desecration and give licence to contest the many histories and assumptions of Australia’s identity. Curated by Indigenous artist Yhonnie Scarce and Curator at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, Claire Watson, the exhibition employs the colonial icon of the gallery as its starting point to discuss the many potent issues around the history of colonisation and its impact on Indigenous Australians. The featured artists are Fergus Binns, Megan Cope, Vicki Couzens, Nici Cumpston (SA), Will French (NSW), Dale Harding (QLD), Anna Liebzeit, Steaphan Paton, Steven Rhall and Yhonnie Scarce.

IMPERMANENT DURATIONS PAINTING & TIME
This exhibition is a cross-cultural exchange between artists based in Melbourne, London and Singapore. This project which extends across various galleries around the world presents the dialogue between Professor David Thomas (AU), Professor Beth Harland (UK), and Dr. Ian Woo (SG). This iteration will result in a presentation of installations and works that wrestle with notions of impermanence and perception, and the condition of painting today.

ANNA WHiTE – ABSTRACT iNTERiOR
Anna White presents a dynamic installation of abstract oil paintings on transparent and opaque Perspex. This recent body of work is inspired by the exquisitely crafted design elements featured in the interior architecture of the Bundoora Homestead. Through asymmetric patterning and repeated motifs, the artist explores the poetic and the provisional.

STEPHANiE HiCKS – NOT A LOVE, NOT A JEWEL, NOT A SiNGLE LiNE
Drawing upon a rich collection of found images and her immediate environment for inspiration Not a love, not a jewel, not a single line is an exploration of repetition as it relates to lived experience and creative practice; a personal archive developed through the use of systems and patterning, and traditions of craft and decorative arts; and a musing on the impossibility of recreating any moment of our lives in its entirety.
Image: Stephanie Hicks, Echo 2015. Collage, 29.7cm x 21cm. Courtesy of the artist.
DEBORAH WHiTE – EVER-RENEWiNG DELiGHT
In her performance-based videos, Deborah White expresses the notion that the sacred can exist within what is commonly thought of as the unproductive aspects of society—that is, amongst the waste, the erotic, laughter, music and dance. Her rituals involve mind clearing elixirs, disembodiment and journeys to the skies and underworld. Her work captures the intimacy, joy and playful vibrancy of ecstasy.
