Introduction

Growing up in southern New Hampshire I was always ex-posed to the outdoors and the experience of being surround-ed by nature. Nature has always been a driving force for de-sign and I have a strong passion for this kind of integration. I believe that knowledge is gained primarily through experience and through experience is how I like to live my life. I strongly believe in sustainable design and the benefits it can provide to human well-being and the natural environment.

My objectives are to become proficient in a profession that I truly love; architecture & design. Through my experiences I have narrowed my concentration to sustainable architecture. I thoroughly believe that the architectural community can lead the way for a better environment and through my passion for architecture I hope to have a beneficial impact towards our planet and humanity. I am graduating Roger Williams Univer-sity in May of 2013 with the intention to gain practical real life experience in the workplace. Following this experience and finding a real focus, I’d like to return to school and acquire a Master’s in Architecture focusing on Sustainable Design or Responsive Architecture.

I believe in an architecture that responds to the current shift of our paradigm; intellectually creating form while holistically designing with the intent to do less harm.

Piazza Orsini was the main focus during my semester in Florence, Italy. This as-signment was undertaken as a group project including Andres Daza and myself. Piazza Orsini presents a dynamic juncture between the urban fabric and nature. The area is dominated by beach side views while always having the presence of a castle from above. The importance of this knuckle of space is greatly underes-timated as it provides a link between the existing beach boulevard and the heavy pedestrian traffic from the city to the north. We saw these two links as an essential axis to work from. The “old” axis, the beach boulevard, had to be maintained and emphasized through the site. From this axis we created a new direction of empha-sis, a new datum that would distinguish our site and structures from the existing architecture. Exploring deeper into the site we sought to bring this urban project to a human scale by establishing viewpoints by which the new structures could derive from. These vanishing points began to shape the four buildings that sit on the beach, creating passageways that pull the visitor in towards the beach from the piazza. Understanding the classical typology of the town, we maintained edges and heights on the street edge by placing a building whose massing is proportional to those surrounding it but whose character is given by a modern interpretation of this typology. The skin embodies the housing units being perforated only by important programmatic pieces that again frame views out towards the landscape. In all the design respects the important traditional aspects of the context while also promoting a new direction to the beach and to local life in general.

UNIVERSITY SHUTTLE BUS TERMINALRoger Williams University, Bristol, Rhode Island

The University Shuttle Bus Terminal site is situated in north campus and currently lacks a connection to the rest of the campus. With this project, my goal is to create a structure integrated with the landscape that serves as the missing graceful link, and to make north campus a place to be, rather than a place to leave. This was a unique proj-ect where I began experimenting with different techniques of deriving form. Through various diagrams and folds of paper I found a form to fit well within the site. I imagined a structure that continued out from the hillside and created an extension of the landscape. Transforming a parking lot where few people lingered to a place of interest that al-lows the visitor to slow down and enjoy the place they are in is the goal.

Continuing with the experimentation with deriving form I developed space through wrapping and folding planes. This was another attempt to create a structure that rises from the landscape. However, this form is being ex-truded from two points and wrapping together to form the floors, ceilings, and walls of the building which finally come together at its highest level. Be-ing an arts building I saw that all the arts are connected and in that sense wanted to create open spaces throughout the structure. Allowing for many interactions between students and wanderers who choose to explore this structure.

Rombo Chair

While in Florence, I enrolled in the Histo-ry of Italian Design class where we were asked to design a chair through various precedents. I sketched out many shapes until I found something that was elegant and simple. The image to the left is a 1”: 1’ scale model laser printed and glued in layers. I intend to continue my design process as I begin to create a mock-up of the chair to know how it really feels to sit within it.

Schroeder Table

Inspired from taking Dutch Architectural History I decided to create a replica of Gerrit Thomas Rievelt’s Schroeder Table. I have a strong interest in craft and wood-working and continue to explore this work through other projects. I have also de-signed a bed frame that I have been us-ing every night since its completion. It is constructed in the same ¾” birch plywood which I constructed the Schroeder Table.

Stencil Art

I began experimenting with spray paint and stencils in 2010 when I became aware of Shepard Fairey and Banksy’s work. I liked the idea of creating art with a meaning or making something that provokes your thoughts while being in an urban or public setting. Not all street art is good art but I believe it can have an important impact. Travelling abroad al-lowed me to experience more of this kind of art and I was fortunate to meet Clet Abraham who I went to visit a few times at his studio. He enjoyed the work I was doing and gave me ideas as to how I might make my own stick-ers. I liked the idea of the stickers because they could be placed quickly and easily and I could bring them everywhere. Once the stick-ers were made I began bringing them wherev-er I traveled, leaving my mark wherever I went.
